An important Call to Action Day is being hosted by the International Centre for Academic Integrity and will be taking place on Wednesday, October 19th around the world. This international day of action against Contract Cheating is intended to raise people’s awareness around its existence and the threats it has to our educational systems and the certificates, diplomas, and degrees we grant here at Humber College ITAL.

Contract cheating occurs when one person completes academic work (e.g., assignment, exam, paper, test, quiz, exam) for another who then submits it for academic credit. Newton and Lang (2016) note that contract cheating accounts for about 20% of the plagiairsm detected through Turnitin. In 2013, Matthews found that contract cheating is a fast growing business as noted through essay mills and study sites that post unauthorized notes, tests, and exams. Humber has an opportunity to participate in standing up to speak out for Education with integrity. On October 19th the Whiteboard Declarations will be taking place across all 3 campuses; Orangeville, North, Lakeshore.

We ask that you take a moment to participate by coming and writing your message about Contract Cheating–then take a picture–and tweet it out using the hashtag #excelwithintegrity. Your voice is important, your voice is needed and will be heard around the world.
Let’s stand together and stand up for education.

Presentation Details

This is a three-hour presentation during which Ms. Jane Elliott, the adaptor of the Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes exercise in teaching about the anatomy of prejudice and the subject of the Peabody Award-winning film, "The Eye of the Storm," introduces and discusses that film and explores with the audience the problems of racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, and ethnocentrism and the responsibility shared by all of us for illuminating them in and eliminating them from ourselves and our environment.

Those attending the presentation will be encouraged to discuss the issues raised as they relate to their own workplace. They will also be encouraged to discuss the materials presented on the handouts which are designed to help them to identify their own racist statements, behaviors, and attitudes. Participants will receive a list of suggested activities which, if implemented, can help them to decrease the amount of racism in their environment and a list of books which, if read, can provide added insights to the problems of the -isms with which we are all confronted.

Jane Elliott | Trainer

Jane Elliott (born May 27, 1933, in Riceville, Iowa) is an American former third-grade schoolteacher, anti-racism activist, and educator, as well as a feminist and LGBT activist. She is known for her "Blue eyes–Brown eyes" exercise. She first conducted her famous exercise for her class the day after Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot. When her local newspaper published compositions that the children wrote about the experience, the reactions (both positive and negative) formed the basis for her career as a public speaker against discrimination. After leaving her school, Elliott became a diversity educator full-time and has been on both The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She still holds the exercise and gives lectures about its effects all over the U.S. and in several locations overseas.
