The United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is recognized annually on March 21st. On March 21, 1960, without warning, South African police at Sharpeville, shot into a crowd of about 5,000 unarmed anti-pass protesters, killing at least 69 people – many of them shot in the back – and wounding more than 200. 

Canada was one of the first countries to support the UN declaration and in 1989, the Government of Canada launched its annual March 21 Campaign. On this day, we are reminded of the millions of people worldwide who continue to experience racism and racial discrimination. We all have an important role to play in speaking out against racism and building a society where racial discrimination and intolerance are not accepted
