A blue square that says, "Come for the vegetables, stay for the community. Volunteer with the GARDENS Project on Saturday, June 10" followed the GARDENS rainbow flower logo

This Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., we'll be planting in several raised garden beds ("pods") as part of the GARDENS Project. We invite you to join us for this fun community event in the sun!

Friends and family (including kids) are welcome to help us plant seedlings in the CF Sherway Gardens pods.

The GARDENS Project features 14 local sites with garden pods that are scattered throughout South Etobicoke. The pods grow fresh produce, which is then given back to the community to help combat food insecurity. Seedlings this year have been generously grown by the Humber Arboretum.

To volunteer or for more information, please email Ashelyn at ashelyn.fung@humber.ca.

A motorized robot with arm

Join us at the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation for a practical demonstration of a mobile robot with an integrated arm and learn about its many benefits:

  • Increased productivity
  • Operational control
  • Ideal labor shortage solution
  • Quality maximization
  • Real-time mapping
  • Traceability
  • Progressive investment

Today's manufacturers are searching for innovative solutions to challenging production problems to meet the ever-expanding demands of a competitive global marketplace. Many companies are now using mobile robots with or without an integrated robotic arm. Mobile robots combine the progress in artificial intelligence with physical robotics, which allows them to navigate their surroundings. KUKA will help us to understand the next generation of mobile robots with artificial intelligence.

In honour of this year’s pride theme, Queer Joy, the 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group (ERG), IGNITE, and the Humber Child Development Centre (CDC) are proud to host a Drag Queen Story Hour with Lucy Flawless and Lucinda Miu.

Drag artists have long brought joy, love, laughter, acceptance and entertainment to our communities. Drag queen story hour is all about providing children with a fun and engaging story time that encourages them to love books and reading - the storyteller just happens to be a beautiful queen

The Humber community is invited to join us on Wednesday, June 7 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the E Concourse for storytelling with Lucy and Lucinda. The drag queens will read to children from the Humber Child Development Centre (CDC), and they will also perform age-appropriate lip synchs.

There may be media/photography covering the event and any children from the CDC who do not have parent consent to be photographed will be seated at the side or back of the crowd. We hope that Humber College hosting this event will send the message that our campus is a welcoming, supportive and safe place for all members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Among many achievements, she was the first African-Canadian woman to be elected to Canada’s House of Commons as the Member of Parliament from Etobicoke-Lakeshore.

Please see the attached invitation for details. We look forward to seeing you at this milestone event in Humber’s history.

Tribute to Wayson Choy poster with rainbow colours

In honour of Pride Month 2023 at Humber, Humber Libraries and Humber Archives are presenting displays at the North and Lakeshore Campus titled A Tribute to Wayson Choy. Wayson Choy was a pioneering figure in Humber’s history (being one of the first faculty hired in 1967), Canadian Literature (writing several award-winning novels and memories), and LGBT+ history in Canada (being one of the first out major Canadian gay writers of colour).

At Humber we are honoured to have had such a close connection to an important Canadian gay writer, and we are honoured to take the opportunity this month to celebrate his life and legacy with displays in both the North and Lakeshore Libraries. These displays will include photographs, news articles, and other archival documents (including QR Codes linking to speeches and presentations made by Choy) from Humber’s Archives. The display will also include books written by Choy, and selections from the 104 books Choy donated to the Humber Libraries, which form part of Humber Libraries’ Chinese-Canadian History & Literature Collection, shortly before his death in 2019.

The displays will be up at both campuses throughout June and viewable during regular library hours. We hope all will get a chance to explore the life of a truly pioneering writer and teacher from Humber’s history. For questions about these displays please reach out to the Humber Archives at archives@humber.ca.
