Humber Music present New York-based jazz pianist and composer David Virelles performing with the Humber Student Ensemble Jazz Collective and special guest and Cuban percussionist Reimundo Sosa. 

Humber Alumnus David Virelles, now an award-winning recording artist with the famed ECM label, will be performing his unique Cuban-influenced contemporary jazz compositions for large jazz ensemble, percussion and piano in this spectacular concert with Humber music students. This concert marks the culmination of a long tradition at Humber Music of the annual Artist-in-Residence Week. A truly transformative week of intensive workshops, masterclasses and seminars, "AIR Week" provides opportunity for students and faculty to work with, learn from, and be inspired by true masters of the jazz musical idiom. Virelle's music is both beautiful and challenging, and the students have been working diligently with ensemble instructor Sam Dickinson to realize David’s musical conception in its full splendor.

Facilitator Bio:

Tracey Michae’l Lewis-Giggetts, BA, MBA, MFA

As a writer and thought-leader, Tracey Michae’l Lewis-Giggetts offers those who read her work and hear her speak an authentic experience; an opportunity to explore the intersection of culture, identity and faith/spirituality at the deepest levels. She is the founder of HeARTspace, a healing community created to serve those who have experienced trauma of any kind through the use of storytelling and the arts.

As a writer, Tracey has published eighteen books including several collaborations with numerous high-profile authors. In 2021, Tracey became one of 20 writers who contributed to the groundbreaking book, You are Your Best Thing: Vulnerability, Shame, Resilience, and the Black Experience edited by acclaimed researcher, Brene Brown, and founder of the MeToo Movement, Tarana Burke. Her most recent publication is the critically-acclaimed book, Black Joy: Stories of Resistance, Resilience, and Restoration (Gallery/Simon and Schuster) which has received rave reviews from celebrities like Kerry Washington, literary writers like Kiese Laymon and Deesha Philyaw, and media outlets like Good Morning America, Essence Magazine, and USA Today.

Tracey has spoken on a number of platforms around the country on topics related to race/social justice, healing, and faith/spirituality. Additionally, Tracey's freelance work has been published in print and online publications such as Oprah Daily, The Washington Post, Essence Magazine, The Guardian, The Chronicle for Higher Education, Ebony Magazine, TheRoot.com, and more.

This is where we will have some fun learning the essentials of data analytics tools and how to use them to tell a great story about your data. Data storytelling is the best way to use data to create new knowledge and new decisions or actions. It is an integrative practice that incorporates knowledge and skills from several disciplines, including communication, analysis, and design.

In this workshop, we will explore Tableau, data analytics tools and how to use them to tell a great story about your data.

Facilitator Bio: 

Barath Roy Michel holds Masters in Social Work (MSW) with specialization in Human Resources.He worked as a HR Business Partner in TVS ASL. With time there was an opportunity to dive into Client projects located in the Middle East, worth 95 million USD, some of his key deliverables were placed on recruitment, training, quality improvement, HR budgeting, performance measurement metrics, data maps, implemented agile and data analysis.

Humber’s Centre for Social Innovation warmly invites you to take part in the Social Innovation Spring Workshops: three exciting, in-person days of innovation. You will hear from faculty, students and community organizations about the genesis of their project and why it matters to community. Through facilitated workshops, you’ll work with them on a challenge within their research or project.
