Aderajew Afework - Sourcing Analyst - OECM

“I didn’t understand what was expected of me—both technically and behaviorally—when I moved to Canada,” says Aderajew Afework.

Newcomers often face a dual challenge: acquiring the technical expertise required for their field while also adjusting to unfamiliar behavioral norms in the workplace.

At Humber Polytechnic, we aim to bridge this gap through our bridging programs, which equip internationally trained professionals with the technical skills they need. These programs also prepare them to navigate workplace intricacies with confidence, helping them restart their careers in Canada.

“The SCAPE program not only sharpened and updated my knowledge and skills in the field but also provided essential training in Canadian work ethics and communication etiquette, which has been invaluable in my current job,” shares Aderajew.

Aderajew arrived in Canada in July 2023 with years of experience in the supply chain field. Despite his extensive background, he initially felt lost and struggled to find his footing. After a series of unsuccessful job applications, he began to reflect on the reasons behind his challenges.

Determined to address this gap, Aderajew enrolled in Humber's Supply Chain Awareness Program and Employment (SCAPE) Bridging Program. The program provided him with exactly what he needed at a crucial time.

Through SCAPE, he gained essential supply chain management knowledge aligned with Canadian industry standards. Under the guidance of Humber’s employment advisor, Caroline, he learned how to effectively communicate his value to potential employers. The transformation was remarkable—within less than a month of completing the program, Aderajew secured a job in his field.

Today, he works as a Sourcing Analyst with OECM, collaborating with a dynamic team on various projects.

Humber Polytechnic celebrates Aderajew’s achievements and wishes him the best in this exciting new chapter of his career

"Understanding the work culture of the country you move to is just as important as mastering technical skills.

When Aderajew arrived in Canada, he realized that knowing what to do wasn’t enough—he needed to learn how to thrive in a new professional environment. Through Humber College's SCAPE program, he gained the skills and cultural insights to restart his career with confidence.

Today, he’s excelling as a Sourcing Analyst at OECM!
