John Steckley, Professor, Liberal Arts and Sciences

After 32 years as a faculty member in Liberal Arts and Sciences, John Steckley has made the decision to retire from teaching to pursue his first love, writing. John is the author of 16 books, the topics of which range from his widely adopted texts (Foundations of Sociology and Introduction to Physical Anthropology), to his inquiry into the Huron language, and to his reflections on Aboriginal culture and justice, with two more books on the way this coming year. 

Avril Carnovale, Associate Dean, The Business School

After fourteen years at Humber College, Avril Carnovale has decided to retire this summer. Avril has a long history with the Business School as a partial load professor, program coordinator and administrator. Avril has been a student champion, supported our international initiatives in Jimei and in Cebu, was instrumental in developing the Cosmetic Management Diploma program and the Fashion Management Graduate Certificate program as well as led the school in transitioning to MyIT Lab.

Joe Kertes, Dean, School of Creative and Performing Arts

Joe Kertes is retiring this summer after 35 years at Humber. He began as a professor in Liberal Arts and Sciences, was a Chair in Applied and Creative Arts, became Director of Marketing for the college, and has been Dean of the School of Creative and Performing Arts since 2001. Joe founded the Humber School for Writers and the Comedy Writing and Performance programs.

David Kemp, Professor, Department of English, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The Department of English would like to bid a fond farewell to David Kemp, who will be retiring from faculty at the end of this academic year. David began teaching part-time at Humber in 1984 and became a full-time faculty member in 1986. Over the course of his career, David has made numerous and lasting contributions to the department, school, and college.

Deb McCarthy, Vice President, Human Resources

After 14 years of outstanding service and dedication to the Humber community, Deb McCarthy, Vice President Human Resources has decided to retire and enjoy her other passions in life.  Joining Humber in 2001 after a successful career in the private sector, Deb brought her talents as human resources professional to Humber as well as the Ontario college system through her leadership on provincial committees and initiatives.  

Nancy Rodrigues, Associate Dean , Advertising, Graphic Design, PR and Fundraising Cluster

As some of you may already know, Nancy Rodrigues, Associate Dean in charge of the Advertising, Graphic Design, PR and Fundraising cluster of programs has decided to retire effective January 31, 2015.

Nancy has been with the college on a full-time basis for over 26 years. During this time she has held a variety of positions, including faculty, program coordinator and more recently as Associate Dean.

Bob Botham, Director, Information Technology Services

After a 43 year association with Humber College, Bob Botham will be retiring from Humber at the end of this month as a Director within the Information Technology Services department.  Over this time, Bob has had a unique opportunity to see the growth and evolution of Humber.   In addition to noting how Humber has grown in terms of students and programs, Bob recalls how the institution has evolved from “a couple of buildings and a barn” in a rural setting to two modern urban campuses.

Cheryl DeRooy, Secretary, Office of the Principal, Lakeshore Campus

The Principal’s Office and everyone at Lakeshore Campus would like to bid a very fond farewell to Cheryl DeRooy who has decided to take an early retirement as of August 29, 2014. Cheryl began at Humber in 1997 as the part-time receptionist at the Lakeshore Campus. During this time, she also completed a one day a week secondment in the School of Creative and Performing Arts. In 2000, she became full-time working as the Lakeshore Campus Receptionist.
