Open Educational Resources: Workshops, Panels & Presentations during Open Education Week

As part of International Open Education Week (March 6 to 10), practitioners from across the Ontario College system will be offering a series of workshops, panels, and presentations on Open Educational Resources (OERs). OERs provide faculty with more flexibility to copy, distribute, and adapt course materials that can be accessed by students at zero cost. OERs come with some form of open licensing, or they are no longer copyright protected.

The Ontario college OER sessions will provide opportunities to learn about creating, adapting, and sharing freely available course materials such as textbooks, lecture notes, syllabi, assignments, and tests. Sessions include:

  • An introduction to finding and assessing OER materials for potential adoption or adaptation
  • An OER learning sprint consisting of micro-challenges where you can learn more about OERs and how you can leverage them in your courses
  • How to use the tools found in the H5P and Pressbooks platforms to create AODA-compliant content
  • Pre-Health Sciences Professors discussing their work on creating a zero-cost textbook
  • A faculty panel discussing how OERs can reduce barriers for student learning and promote equity and inclusion
  • A discussion of Maamwi, a collaborative effort across colleges and across college departments to create a portal of open learning resources reflective of Indigenous histories, cultures, and worldviews in the regions of the 24 Ontario colleges

For more details on the sessions and to register visit OE Week 2023. Learn more about OERs via the Library website

Registered partial-load employees will be eligible for priority hiring for available partial-load work based on the criteria set out in Article 26.10 E of the Academic Employees Collective Agreement. Important changes to this year’s registry form: considering the newly introduced changes to the Collective Agreement (Article 26.10 E), you will now be asked to indicate the maximum Teaching Contact Hours you are prepared to teach for the academic year. Additionally, registration will be for the upcoming academic year (September - August) and the new registration deadline is April 30 of each year.

When Do I Register?

  • Registration is open as of Thursday, December 1, 2022.
  • The deadline to register is April 30, 2023, at 11:59 p.m.
  • Note: Registering in previous years does not automatically register you for the upcoming year.

Where Do I Register?

What do I need to Register?

  • Your Humber employee number AND your N number.
  • Your Humber employee number can be found on your pay stub, or you can ask your manager.
  • Your N number is used to log into the system. If you do not know your N number, please contact I.T. Support Centre.

Submission Confirmation

  • When you submit your interest, you will be placed onto the registry.
  • Once you register, you will receive an email confirmation, please retain confirmation for your records.
  • Only those who meet the criteria as outlined in Article 26.10E. of the Academic Employees Collective Agreement will get priority in hiring.
  • Please note: The hours you indicate that you are prepared to teach will not guarantee a corresponding work assignment. The college will review as per the terms of the Collective Agreement and operational requirements.

Questions?

Should you have any questions about the Partial-Load Registry procedures, or eligibility, please speak with your associate dean, your Human Resource Business Partner, or your union (info@opseu562.org).

Photo of Burchell Hanson sitting down at a desk

We are excited and proud to introduce you to Burchell Hanson. Burchell has been a member of the BAERG since its inception in 2020 and has played a very active role in the group. He has a passion for advocacy work and currently serves as a member of the advocacy sub-committee of BAERG teaching others self-advocacy.

Background

Born and educated in Jamaica, Burchell discovered his interest, passion and skill in accounting and business.

He built a successful career in the corporate world, progressing from Cost Accountant to Supervisor of the Accounting Department to Chief Accountant and was further promoted to a Senior Management role at Goodyear. Towards the end of his 11-year tenure at Goodyear, he pursued studies at Nova Southeastern University and obtained his MBA.

Burchell immigrated to Canada with the intention of using his accounting, management, operations, and marketing knowledge and experience to launch a career in the Canadian corporate workforce. That was plan A, it was not successful, no corporate entity would hire him.

Start of Humber Journey

As they say, when one door closes, another one opens and that’s how Burchell’s journey at Humber College started…plan B.

Burchell joined Humber in September 2003. After five years as a partial-load professor, he obtained a full-time teaching position. He is now a faculty member in the Longo Faculty of Business and teaches both accounting and management. He’s also a Course Lead for Financial Accounting I and Principles of Management.

Making a Difference at Humber

Coming up on 20 years of teaching at Humber, Burchell has been a witness to many changes. He has built lasting connections with Humber alumni and provides support in their post-Humber journey. He continues to be driven and fulfilled by his positive impact on Humber students.

He shares his Goodyear story with them, inspires them to set their own objectives, put in the work and effort so that they too can also have successful careers in management or accounting.

What keeps Burchell going? “Opportunity to contribute to humanity, making an impact on other people’s lives, passing on my knowledge and experience to students to help them in their journey”.
