February 28 is International Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) Awareness Day.

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs), also commonly referred to as musculoskeletal disorders, are a category of injuries that can affect our muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joints. Some work-related risk factors that can increase the chance of an RSI developing include forceful actions (gripping, lifting, reaching, pushing, pulling), awkward postures and movements (bending, twisting), static postures (standing or sitting for a long time), and of course, repetitive actions.

Preventing RSIs from occurring in the first place is the ultimate goal. RSIs not only impact our ability to successfully perform our work, but they can negatively affect our life outside of work. Consider the following prevention techniques:

  • Change your posture throughout the day.
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects or get help if you need to lift.
  • Minimize carrying tasks: use a cart if you need to move something.
  • Reduce awkward postures by properly setting up your workstation.
  • Take breaks: after every hour of working, get up and move around for a few minutes.

Humber’s Occupational Health and Safety Services will be offering a virtual training session on proper office ergonomics and setting up your workstation. Be on the lookout for additional details in the coming weeks.

For more information on RSI Awareness Day, or RSIs in general, please visit the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety or contact Humber’s Occupational Health and Safety Services at healthandsafety@humber.ca.

Photos of various art installations at Nuit Blanche

Nuit Blanche, Toronto’s all-night contemporary art event, will take place on September 23, 2023, in neighbourhoods across the city, including major exhibition areas in Etobicoke, downtown and Scarborough. This year, the City of Toronto seeks to uncover and highlight artists whose ground-breaking practices challenge the status quo through media, form or content that transforms public spaces and inspires the public to see and experience Toronto in new and meaningful ways.

Humber Galleries is excited to announce that, Lakeshore Campus will return as a major exhibition hub for Nuit Blanche Toronto 2023 and is now accepting Independent Project applications. These are self-produced projects that can be installed in traditional and non-traditional spaces, such as parks, window vitrines, courtyards, storefronts, office towers, parking lots, and laneways. Applicants from any artistic discipline are eligible, but proposals ought to have a strong visual component and be rooted in contemporary art practices. Proposals should also address and integrate Nuit Blanche Toronto’s 2023 curatorial theme Breaking Ground in their project and must be located on Lakeshore Campus.

The 2023 curatorial theme Breaking Ground speaks to ideas centred around the natural world as well as being on the vanguard of change and innovation. Defined as the preparation for building or planting, Breaking Ground invites artists to explore a multiplicity of themes, including but not limited to the implications of climate change, construction and development of the city’s urban landscape, the impacts on communities and our collective responsibilities around land and stewardship.

The Independent Project program is open to all Humber College students, faculty, alumni, and staff, as well as Toronto-based professional artists, collectives, and arts organizations. All applications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of the Nuit Blanche Etobicoke Curator, City of Toronto staff, and Humber College staff.

Applications must be submitted by Monday, March 27, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. EST via email to melissa.poliah@humber.ca.

Dear Colleagues,

After 35 years of outstanding service and dedication to the engineering industry and post-secondary education, Dr. Jonathan Kim, associate dean of Information & Communications Technology (ICT), within the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology, has decided to retire as of August 1, 2023.

I have had the pleasure of working with Jonathan for more than 12 years and I hold a deep respect for his commitment to honesty, integrity and dedication to post-secondary teaching and learning.

Jonathan graduated from the University of Toronto where he received his B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science, M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. A licensed professional engineer (P.Eng.), Jonathan has held numerous post-secondary roles as a teacher and researcher. He started his academic career at the University of Victoria where he became an Associate Professor with tenure and established an award-winning reputation for both teaching and research excellence. Later, he became a full-time research professor for the Centre for Applied Power Electronics (CAPE) at the University of Toronto, fully devoted to industry-sponsored research and development programs. He also held an adjunct professorship at Yanbian University of Science and Technology, Yanji City, Jilin, China.

Since 2011, Jonathan has worked in the Ontario college system and held leadership roles in applied research, capstone projects, curriculum development, industry engagement. During his tenure at Humber College as Associate Dean, Jonathan has made significant contributions to the Humber FAST community including:

  • New program development: Successfully developed and launched new programs including Cloud Computing Graduate Certificate, Bachelor of Engineering - Information Systems Engineering honours degree, and Artificial Intelligence with Machine Learning Graduate Certificate.
  • Establishment of applied research culture: Challenged, motivated, and supported ICT faculties to engage in applied research projects in collaboration with industry partners and with external funding.
  • Work-Integrated Learning and Co-op: Developed and incorporated Co-op in all ICT diplomas, advanced-diploma, and degree program, and all ICT graduate certificates have industry-sponsored capstone projects to implement Work-Integrated Learning.
  • New full-time faculty hires: Over the last four years under his leadership, ICT cluster hired 12 new FT faculty positions to support and build a strong ICT team.
  • Increased enrollment: With new programs launching, program expansion to Humber International Graduate School (IGS), as well as Co-op and Work-Integrated Learning components, ICT programs are responding to industry needs and are projected to healthy enrollment growth.

Jonathan has been a distinguished colleague, teacher and wise mentor to many junior faculties, and a good friend to many of us.  He will be deeply missed.

On behalf of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology and the Humber community, thank you Jonathan for your service, dedication and contributions to Humber College and the engineering community. While we are saddened by this news, the Humber community will continue to benefit from your contributions long after your retirement. You will forever be a member of the Humber FAST family.

With gratitude,

Farzad Rayegani, Ph.D., P.Eng, FEC.
Senior Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology
