As a relatively new (1.5 years), one-of-a-kind matrix-based service provider, it is not uncommon for folks to still ask me... "So what exactly IS CPL?'"

On the surface, the answer is simple. Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) is Humber's continuing education and lifelong learning operation with ties to each of our six Faculties and two educational business units - COWD and ETS. We offer continuing and professional learning products like courses, micro-credentials and/or certificates, that help to upskill, reskill or reconfigure someone's personal or professional future. Our average learner is 42 years old, has a job, and is female (73 per cent). While most of our learners come from the GTA (70 per cent), we have folks from throughout Ontario and Canada. We also have international CPL learners with more than 24 different nationalities representing every continent.

If we dig deeper we find that CPL is also made up of countless cross-functional relationships with campus services like Marketing, Legal, Purchasing, ITS & Finance. These relationships are further strengthened by the insights and support of Student and Community Engagement, Government Relations, PPDR, CIL, our COIs and ORI; each helping us co-create a positive alternative revenue stream for the College. CPL's various products are centred around industry needs, quality and financial viability.

So, what is CPL? We are an outside-the-box group of innovators and adult-learning specialists who are committed to delivering outstanding, high-quality educational products. We serve as a gateway for great ideas and a delivery mechanism for cutting-edge solutions. We are, by necessity, future-focused bridge builders and barrier breakers. We are HUMBER and with more than 42 (non-CPL) staff from throughout the College who are engaged, like you, in supporting our efforts to exceed learner expectations every single day.

Many thanks,

Frank Cappadocia
Dean, Continuous Professional Learning

An idea is all it takes to begin the journey of Research and Innovation.

At the Office of Research & Innovation, we work on research projects that allow faculty members to stay actively involved in their field while pursuing their research interests, cultivate community and industry partnerships, and provide intensive work experiences for students.

We recently started working on a research project for smart buildings and are seeking individuals familiar with SkySpark software/coding.

If you're familiar with SkySpark or know anyone who is, please email shyama.patel@humber.ca before February 16, 2023, by 12 p.m.

Midterm season is fast approaching! Is your Gradebook set up? Get the most out of Blackboard Ultra Gradebook with these five tips from your team at the Innovative Learning Support Centre (ILSC).

“How do I set up Overall Grades?”

Tip #1: Use the weighted grading calculation to show students the running total of their overall grade. Assign the weighted percentage values to each gradable item according to the assessment plan or structure of your published course outline.

“How do I post Midterm Grades?”

Tip #2: Calculate and share midterm (and final) grades with your students using the overall grade column. Verify that all gradable items or categories have been assigned the correct weighted percentage values, and only those counting towards the midterm grade are included.

Tip #3: Check the box “Base calculation on points earned out of total graded points” so students see their actual grade earned to date. If left unchecked, the overall grade would factor in all other assessments not yet administered or graded, and therefore would show skewed student grades.

“Why can’t my students see their grades?”

Tip #4: In the content page, assessment item(s) and the content folder where they are located need to be made ‘visible to students’ so students can view their grade. Confirm the configuration of the release conditions to show course content to students during the given time period.

“I copied a past course and now gradebook is assigning automatic zeros. What should I do?”

Tip #5: Gradebook assigns automatic zeros for past due assessments by default, even for past courses that have been copied. Disable automatic zeros from the gradebook settings to ensure that grades are not negatively impacted, and students are credited for all their work.

Black Student Support & Engagement - Presentation Request Form

The BSSE (Black Student Support and Engagement) Program is an equity hub within the department of Student Success and Engagement at Humber College. The BSSE Program seeks to provide students who identify as Black with community, resources, and support to help them fully maximize their campus experience. Our programming is open to students within Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber.

BSSE is always looking to connect with students and share how we work to support them and provide them with opportunities for growth, development and community building.

We are excited to announce that we are now facilitating classroom/group visits where members of BSSE can introduce our program and explain all the ways to get involved with us. If you are a professor who thinks your class could benefit from learning more about BSSE, or a campus partner who is looking to explore our service, please fill out our Black Student Support and Engagement Presentation Request Form. Presentations are approximately 30 minutes (15-minute presentation, 15 minutes for Q&A) and our hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We look forward to visiting your classroom and spaces and connecting further with students and the Humber community.

If you have any questions or would like more information please email bsse@humber.ca.

Accessible Learning Services shares some best practices considerations:

  • Make documents accessible from the start: it's easier than reverse engineering a document to make it accessible.

  • Be wary of using old material. It is less likely to be accessible.

  • Ensure all electronic learning materials are compatible with screen readers and other assistive technologies used by blind and low vision students. For support with how to create accessible electronic learning materials you can contact Innovative Learning.

  • When adopting textbooks and eBooks, speak with the publisher about the accessibility options offered to students. EBooks are not necessarily accessible. Some publishers do not consider accessibility requirements creating numerous barriers for students. Advocate through your communication with publishers to make materials accessible with screen readers. If the material is not accessible, consider using a different publisher.

  • If your program uses specific software as part of the curriculum, consult with the vendor to ensure their software meets accessibility requirements. This will reduce barriers for blind and low vision students.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.
