Horizontal text: "Celebrating #HumberLove"

Each year for Valentine's Day, we celebrate #HumberLove with happy alumni couples who met in our halls and classrooms. Humber is more than a place to meet future colleagues and lifelong friends, some find their soulmates.

This year's couples include:

  • Luiz Oliveira, Bachelor of Creative Advertising
    Aubary Oliveira, Photography
  • Dwight Mighty, Tourism - Travel Services Management
Azra Mighty, Fitness and Health Promotion

Together, they share their love journeys from the first time they met to their wedding day, a little bundle of joy and other memorable moments.

If you're a grad with a love story to share, we'd love to hear from you. Let us know at alumni@humber.ca.

See more happy couples at humber.ca/alumni/humberlove.

At Humber we have more than 200 full-time programs between our six unique Faculties. We continually work toward better aligning our programs within the academic division to support an optimal student experience. In so doing, the Supply Chain Graduate Certificate program and the Project Management Graduate Certificate program will be moving from the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology to the Longo Faculty of Business. The transition will begin in the Spring 2023 semester. All faculty members currently assigned to the programs will move to the Longo Faculty of Business. This move will enable faculty and students to engage with similar programs and create synergies within and beyond the classroom. I would like to thank all faculty and staff who are impacted by the changes as we work to ensure that this is a smooth transition for our students.

Humber’s research and innovation magazine SPARK wins Silver award at the COPA

Humber Press, Office of Research & Innovation (ORI), is thrilled to announce that Humber’s research and innovation quarterly magazine SPARK is the winner of a Silver award at the 14th annual Canadian Online Publishing Awards (COPA). The award-winning SPARK was recognized in the category of Best Digital Edition Publication – Academic.

The COPA has become the tip of the spear for the digital publishing industry in Canada by showcasing and helping Canadian content creators move the needle forward for their brands on the global stage. The COPA was started in 2009 as an industry showcase of the Best Digital Content creators in the magazine and newspaper industries.

The COPA nomination entries are reviewed by a 'who’s who’ of the digital publishing industry in Canada. The panel has more than 90 judges and is a collection of content, creative, digital, web, tech marketing, media and publishing experts.

The award is a special recognition of SPARK Issue #4, which shines the spotlight on three interdisciplinary initiatives from Humber’s Visual and Digital Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts, and Fashion Management programs.

Anju Kakkar, IMBB™, Managing Editor of Humber Press, and the team accepted the award at the COPA award ceremony held on February 9, 2023; the team was delighted to be joined by Dianna Dinevski, PhD. (abd), associate dean of Research and Development.

The Humber Press team is grateful for this honour and heartily acknowledges the leadership of Dr. Ginger Grant, dean of Research & Innovation, for her unwavering support. The team also extends special thanks to Rose-Marie Dolinar, PhD., and the entire ORI team. We also acknowledge with thanks Humber’s growing research and innovation community.

Sue Watt smiling

Sue Watt, after 30 plus years at Humber’s Child Development Centre (CDC), has retired. Her colleagues, the children in her care, and their families, will forever remember the influence that she had on them.

Throughout her career, her passion for holistic and healthy child development was seen in everything that she did. She was always singing, sharing her love of nature, and ensuring that children experienced the outdoors on walks as she felt it was essential to the social and emotional development of children and teachers alike.

Sue was instrumental in being a steadfast role model, not only for her colleagues, but also for the pre-service ECE students that were lucky enough to have her as a mentor. Even after 30+ years of service, Sue is fondly remembered throughout each day as the educators at the CDC work with children and their families as they continue to bring her philosophy of care to their daily lives and interactions with the future leaders of tomorrow.

Sue’s delicious homemade banana bread and other baked goods also hold a special place with all those that were fortunate enough to work alongside her. We hope that the next chapter of Sue’s life brings her as much happiness as her years spent at the CDC did. Sue, welcome to this phase of life, where every day is the weekend!

Thank you for your dedication over the years – you will be forever a member of the CDC family.

Humber was once again honoured for outstanding achievements by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan).

Ray Chateau, director of Athletics and Recreation at Humber, has been selected as the Gold recipient for CICan’s 2023 Leadership Excellence Award for Managerial Staff.

Ray’s Gold award for Leadership Excellence for Managerial Staff highlights many of his accomplishments over his longstanding career at Humber where he has:

  • Led the Humber Hawks and earned 15 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Academic All-Canadian titles in 2021-22, and the CCAA Academic All-Canadian Recognition Award for the second consecutive year.
  • Guided the CCAA’s landmark decision to revise the language in their operating code to allow student-athletes to compete on the sports team that corresponds with their sex assigned at birth or their gender identity.
  • Spearheaded the Humber High-Performance Centre’s transition to an online format during the pandemic so student-athletes could continue to train.

Ray’s remarkable achievements at Humber and beyond will be honoured at this year’s World Congress, held in Montreal on Monday, April 24, 2023. Ray will also be recognized on CICan’s website, through a press release, and various social media posts.

The CICan Awards are handed out annually and recognize best practices from institutions across the country and individual leadership and achievements. Since 2015, Humber has won nine CICan Awards of Excellence, including four Gold, one Silver, and four Bronze awards.
