It is with mixed emotions that I announce Dr. Stephen Allen has accepted the position of Director, International Education & English Language Institute at York University. His last day at Humber will be July 1.

During his time at Humber, Stephen has led a number of initiatives in the areas of ESL, teacher education, and international partnerships. Notable achievements include the successful launch and development of an ESL partnership with Kansai Gaidai University in Japan and collaboration with Humber’s International Development Institute to consult on educational technology implementation and develop a course on Content Based Education and Training methodology. Stephen also co-led the development of two eCampusOntario-funded projects with Seneca College: ODELLO and SPELL, which support students and instructors, respectively, in language learning. He has also provided leadership for the launch of the Centre of Education, Language and Professional Practice, and he has been involved in supporting Humber’s collaborative framework for continuous professional learning (CPL) while providing students with a number of international CPL opportunities.

I would like to take this time to sincerely thank Stephen for his commitment to Humber over the last 10 years and for the contributions he has made to the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences through the various roles he has held, including Director of the English Language Centre, Acting Associate Dean for the Department of English, and most recently, Associate Dean, Continuous Professional Learning.

Please join me in congratulating Stephen as he moves on to this next exciting stage of his career.

We wish to recognize and congratulate Accessibility Consultant, Maureen Carnegie, on a successful, 23-year career in Student Success and Engagement as she bids farewell to Humber on June 30.

Maureen began her career at Humber in 1999 as a Counsellor and Disability Consultant with a few iterations of job title in between. Since then she has contributed to the success of countless students, built solid, collaborative relationships with teaching faculty and mentored many new staff navigating their role in Accessible Learning Services (ALS). From 2005-2014, Maureen led the team as Coordinator for Disability Services at Humber and to this day, ALS can always count on her ‘can do’ spirit when starting any projects – from writing inaugural funding proposals to applications for funding our annual transition-to-postsecondary programs, planning our move from B building to the LRC or supporting professional development opportunities for her peers.

Maureen’s commitment to equity and inclusion has been evident in not only her faculty role, but also on the committees and organizations she has contributed to. Maureen served as co-chair of the Gender and Sexual Diversity Committee (2011 to 2016) where her proposal resulted in space allocation and funding for the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre. The centre was first of its kind in Ontario colleges. Maureen delivered on-site Mental Health First Aid training to numerous Ontario college administrators, staff and faculty on behalf of Humber as a component of a specialized, provincial grant initiative, which has continued as integral programming. Her expertise in the disability service field was called upon to design and co-facilitate training for both the Trebas Institute and the Toronto School of Art on how to establish and maintain student disability services in the context of the Ontario Human Rights Code and lending her knowledge in participation with our initiatives involving universal design for learning.

Maureen has been generous and thoughtful with her time as well as with her expertise to which ALS and the broader community has benefited greatly.

Please take a moment to wish her well on this momentous occasion.

Despite the positive shift in social awareness, media representation, and inclusive policies and practices, there is still much about 2SLGBTQ+ topics that is not taught, resulting in the existence of homophobia/transphobia and hate crimes.

Questions such as how to support family, friends, students, and colleagues who are struggling with coming out or want to transition are commonly asked. Through an interdisciplinary focus, this Humber Continuing Professional Learning Certificate of Accomplishment will begin to answer this question and more by allowing learners to better explore and challenge the histories of sexuality and gender normativity across multiple political, legal, workplace, artistic, literary, and cultural contexts. Learners will participate in an interactive, engaging, and inclusive and safe community-building space.

What you will learn:

  • Social and political histories of sexuality and gender representation from around the world
  • Understanding of the evolving 2SLGBTQ+ acronyms and the vast gender identities, sexualities and populations encompassed within
  • Review key legislation in Ontario that protects 2SLGBTQ+ communities in the workplace
  • Media representation of 2SLGBTQ+ people and significance and impact on the community

Program Structure:

  • Six 15-hour (5 weeks) courses in the certificate
  • Delivered online with both synchronous and asynchronous delivery
  • The synchronous classes will typically run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. EST in the second and fourth week of each course
  • To complete the certificate, you will need to take all four compulsory courses and one elective course

Courses offered:

Compulsory

  • EDIQ 100: Foundations in 2SLGBTQ+ Studies
  • EDIQ 101: Working with 2SLGBTQ+ Communities
  • EDIQ 102: 2SLGBTQ+ Representation in Popular Literature and Media
  • EDIQ 103: Sexualities and Identities in the 2SLGBTQ+ Spectrum

Electives

The Indigenous Education & Engagement team is pleased to share a newly created video resource with the Humber community, Giving a Land Acknowledgement. This video offers a range of insights from educators and community knowledge keepers on the responsibility and considerations that come with giving land acknowledgements.

This video answers the following key questions:

  • Why do we give land acknowledgements?
  • What should we keep in mind when giving land acknowledgements?
  • What does it mean to give a land acknowledgement at Humber College?

You are encouraged to embed this link into your Blackboard course sites and share it with your students, colleagues and community members.
