The mask mandate at Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber (U of GH) will remain in place until June 30, 2022. With several larger indoor gatherings planned for the next month, including convocation, this decision was made out of an abundance of caution and taking public health recommendations and campus environment trends into consideration.

Well-fitting masks that cover the nose, mouth and chin will continue to be required within any indoor college facilities.

Unless the public health situation in the province changes dramatically, in July and beyond, indoor masking on campus will be a personal choice.

Humber and U of GH will always be caring communities and mask-friendly environments. Tips on how to respectfully navigate situations you might encounter on campus will be shared in the coming weeks and months.

There may continue to be scenarios in which masking is required, including working or learning environments in which close proximity is required for extended periods of time.

Everyone is encouraged to continue to complete the self-screening in the Humber Guardian app before coming to campus each time. As a reminder, if you are feeling unwell, do not come to campus.

Throughout the pandemic, we have focused on creating safe places to learn, work and live. We appreciate your continued cooperation and consideration of others.

Humber is committed to continuous quality improvement and engaging students in this process. At the beginning of June, the college will administer the online ‘Ontario Colleges Student Experience Survey’ (OCSES) that has replaced the previous ministry KPI Student Satisfaction survey. This survey will measure student experiences related to teaching and learning quality, program related knowledge and skills, work integrated learning (if applicable), and student services and resources. The results of the survey will allow the college to identify strengths and areas of improvement.

All students in full-time, funded programming who began their studies in Winter 2022 and are currently enrolled in their second semester will receive a personal survey invitation through email on Monday, June 6. The survey will remain open until Friday, June 17 at midnight. Key messaging will be communicated to students by Humber to promote the survey and encourage completion.

For questions about the survey, please contact Jean O’Donnell at Jean.o’donnell@humber.ca.

ORI's Faculty Rock Star: Daryoush Mortazavi, PhD

The Office of Research and Innovation is shining the Faculty Rock Star spotlight on Professor Daryoush Mortazavi of the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology (FAST). Daryoush is a researcher and educator with over 15 years of practical industry experience in Iran, Australia and Canada. At Humber, he applies his vast expertise in both classrooms and applied research projects.

Daryoush is currently the Principal Investigator on an ongoing research project; in the last 18 months, he has received six Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Engage grants in collaboration with several academic institutions, two of which were with Humber College.

When asked what advice he would give to students eager to get involved in research, Daryoush responds: “I’d advise students to reach out to faculty members who share their research interests, ask questions and express interest in learning more.”

On May 4 we were joined by OCAD University and Université de Lille for a symposium on Public Art. Together we explored the art that we the public want to have access to in hopes to expand access and engagement in the arts. Conversations spanned from student activations, to it's intersections with health, and architectural possibilities.

Today we're happy to announce that recordings of each session are now available at: https://www.theartwewant.ca

Humber has always been a pioneer in education. In accordance with this vision, dozens of projects are implemented by Humber every year. Humber delivers high quality outcomes, while catering to the expectations of our clients and stakeholders. Managing these projects effectively to ensure successful completion is crucial. We know that Humber has great people that are key to making these projects successful. But are there other tools that the organization uses to help make their projects successful that could help me too?

In fact, one of the biggest tools being used is the Humber’s project management methodology. This tool is the foundation of highly effective project management practices at Humber. It has all the standards, best practices, templates, and guidelines to help you to lead your projects successfully.

We know that projects are not only run by Capital Development & Facilities Management, Finance and Information Technology Services, there are so many other projects happening in the organization that are led by our administrative and faculty teams. We have created a series of short videos with the aim of socializing the value of Humber’s project management methodology. We hope that these will highlight for the Humber community, the tools that they might use to help them manage their projects.

You can find all of Humber’s project management tools and resources on our website.

Stay tuned for upcoming future videos!

On Thursday, May 26th, flags at our campuses will be lowered to half-mast in memory of Connor Beck. Connor was in the Police Foundations Program. He passed away on May 12th and there will be a memorial service on May 26th at Meadowvale Funeral Center in Brampton.

The Humber community is deeply saddened by Connor’s sudden and untimely death.  The College has been in contact with Connor’s family to express our condolences, and will continue to provide support to faculty, staff and students who knew him. As an acknowledgment of Connor’s significant progress towards completing his program, Humber will be awarding his diploma posthumously to his family in his honour. It is clear from conversations with Connor’s family that he made an incredible impact on the lives of those he came in contact with and in his community.
