Picture of students celebrating Diwali in the Barrett Centre

Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber are committed to the principles of human rights, equity and inclusion. Monday, October 24, 2022, marks the celebration of Diwali. Diwali is a festival of lights and is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains worldwide. Many Humber students, faculty and staff will be celebrating Diwali.

The Humber community is encouraged to learn more about and experience Diwali. You are welcome to visit Blog TO for a list of 10 Places to Celebrate Diwali

Students looking to connect with peers or engage in celebrations and activities can discover more through the First Year Experience (FYE) program, the Centre for Spirituality and Wellness, Black Student Support & Engagement (BSSE), the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre and Student Life programs.

Please be mindful that students, faculty and staff may require accommodations such as time off or extensions to celebrate. If you have questions regarding the duty to accommodate based on creed, please contact Nalini Jugnundan, Interim Director, Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion, at nalini.jugnundan@humber.ca

On behalf of the Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion and Student Success & Engagement, we wish you a happy and prosperous Diwali!

Maria Jacome, professor in the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology, received a CCSIF grant for the project “Caring for the Thunderbird’s Nest: Geophysical and machine learning solutions to characterize and monitor inequitable exposures to ground and air pollution with Fort William First Nation” in collaboration with Fort William First Nation and the University of Toronto.

We are equally delighted to announce the success of our application for Humber’s new NSERC Mobilize Grant. Phishing poses a serious threat to the Humber community and can impact both the institution as well as our community members personally. It is because of this risk that we are reaching out to our student community to ensure that they remain aware of emails which may appear suspicious.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is a form of social engineering, whereby cybercriminals send emails purporting to be from reputable companies or individuals and is the most common form of social engineering used today.

For more information check out this article on the forms of phishing

What is Social Engineering?

Social engineering is the art of manipulating people to gain access to private information, access to systems, or valuables. When reviewing emails in your Humber student mailbox, please be vigilant as it may be a phishing attempt. To help assist you in identifying suspicious emails, here are some additional resources to educate you about phishing.

Visit Get Cyber Safe to learn more about phishing, cyber-attacks and staying safe online.

In our efforts to further protect our community from this type of fraudulent and harmful activity, Humber ITS is providing optional Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to all Humber students when accessing Microsoft 365 products. We are encouraging students to be early adopters and enroll for MFA throughout #CyberMonth2022. Cybersecurity threats are becoming increasingly complex, and MFA will help protect your student account by adding an extra verification step that ensures they are who they say they are when they log in. This helps prevent hackers from gaining unauthorized access to our student accounts even if they are able to compromise a student’s password.

If you have any questions, contact the I.T. Support Centre at 416.675.6622 x8888 or humber.ca/techtalk.
