Answers to Frequently Asked Student Email Questions

Last revised on August 31, 2022

Are students issued a Humber email address?
Yes, as of Fall 2022, all Humber students (full-time and part-time) are issued a Humber email address.

Is email recognized at Humber as an official means of communicating Humber business?
Humber email is an official means of communicating Humber business and may, in some cases, be a sole means of communication.

Why are students being issued a Humber email address?
Humber email is intended to support Humber’s instructional, research, and service activities. Refer to the “Acceptable Use Policy for Digital Services” for examples of prohibited activities as well as Humber’s position on the use of its resources for personal use.

Are students required to use Humber email?
Yes, as per Humber's new Electronic Mail Policy effective April 2022, Humber has the right to communicate with students, employees, and trusted partners via its email solution. Humber also has the right to expect Humber email will be received and read in a timely fashion.

Have all Humber systems been configured to use the student email address?
Humber will be working over the next year to re-configure all its systems/solutions to use the students.humber.ca address for communication and collaboration purposes instead of HMail or personal email addresses.

How should email be used in the classroom?
Instructors may determine how email will be used in their classes. It is recommended that if instructors have email requirements and expectations that they specify these requirements in their course syllabus. Instructors may expect that students' official email addresses are being accessed, and instructors may use email for their courses accordingly.

What solution is Humber using for student email?
Humber is using Microsoft 365 (Exchange and Outlook) for student email.

Are students in the same Microsoft 365 tenant as Humber employees and trusted partners?
Students, employees, and trusted partners all co-exist within the same Microsoft 365 tenant for communication and collaboration purposes.

Do student email addresses appear in the Humber address book?
Yes, student addresses now appear in the Humber address book.

What is the eligibility criteria for a student email address?
Students actively enrolled in one or more Humber courses (continuous professional learning, certificate, diploma, or degree) are entitled to a student email address. Individuals in Real Estate Education programs are not entitled to a Humber email address.

What format does Humber student email address take?
Students are issued a “username@students.humber.ca” email address that includes a display name (preferred name and last name) that corresponds to their Humber student record (example: “Jay Fasil” <n12345678@students.humber.ca>).

Why do student email addresses not use one's first and last name?
Too many students share the same first and last name to make name-based email addresses practical. Also, not all students, for cultural reasons, have a first/preferred name and/or last name as part of their student record.

Are students able to request a different email address or an alias?
No, students may not request a different email address or an alias at this time.

Are students studying at the University of Guelph-Humber issued a Humber email address?

Are alumni entitled to a Humber email address?
At this time, Humber does not provide email services to Humber alumni.

When are students provisioned with a Humber email address?
Students are provisioned with a Humber email address 21 days before the start of their first semester. Individuals in continual professional learning courses are provisioned with a Humber email address 21 days prior to the first day of their first course.

Are student email addresses forever? If not, at what point do students lose access to their Humber email address?
Student mailboxes are permanently deleted after 18 months of no course activity and are not recoverable.

How often are students required to check their Humber email?
Students are expected to check their Humber email on a frequent and consistent basis to stay current with communications. Given communications may be time-critical, Humber recommends students check for mail once a business day at a minimum.

How do students access Humber email?
Students may access their Humber email by visiting humber.ca/microsoft365 and logging in using your Humber credentials (username and password). Note that all users logging into Microsoft products must qualify their username with "@humber.ca" appended to the end (example: n12345678@humber.ca, smith@humber.ca, bcdf1234@humber.ca, etc.) to show their account is linked to Humber.

Is student email protected by multi-factor authentication like employee email?
No, multi-factor authentication is not in place for student email at this time. Humber may implement a form of multi-factor authentication in the future. In the meantime, Humber is tagging all internal mail originating from students.

What email protocols does Humber email support?
For the best experience and complete support, Humber recommends connecting to Humber’s email solution using one of the following ways: 1) via the Exchange protocol (MAPI) within the most current Outlook desktop client; 2) using the most current version of the Outlook app for iOS/Android; and/or 3) connecting to Outlook on the Web using a supported Web browser. Assistance is available via the I.T. Support Centre.

To what other Microsoft 365 services are Humber students entitled?
In addition to email and calendar functionality (Exchange, Outlook, Bookings, Delve), students have access to 1) Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Access [PC only]); 2) files and content services (OneDrive, Stream, and Sway); 3) work management tools (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power Virtual Agents, Forms, Planner, and To Do); and 4) meetings and voice services (Teams).

Are students able to redirect incoming Humber email to another email address?

Are students able to reserve on-campus resources via Outlook's calendar functionality like meeting spaces and boardrooms?
Yes, students are able to see and reserve on-campus resources to which they have access.

How does spam filtering work with student email?
All incoming mail is scanned for digital threats. Mail known to be spam is automatically deleted. Mail suspected of being spam is delivered to one's "Junk Email" folder for review.

Is incoming or outgoing email capped?
Yes, like most organizations, Humber caps incoming mail (including header, body, and attachments) at 50 MB and outgoing mail (including header, body, and attachments) at 150 MB.

Is email originating from outside Humber tagged, and if so, why is it tagged?
All email originating from outside Humber is tagged to help recipients arbitrate if a message is safe and legitimate. Tagging is controlled at the organization level and cannot not be turned off by individuals.

Is internal email originating from students tagged, and if so, why is it tagged?
Humber is tagging students.humber.ca email as a temporary measure for security reasons while it explores multifactor authentication for students. Tagging is controlled at the organization level and cannot not be turned off by individuals.

Are students able to use their Humber email address for bulk mailing purposes?
Humber email accounts may not to be used to bulk email large numbers of external email addresses. Restrictions are in place to stop bulk emailing attempts so Humber does not get blocklisted by Internet Service Providers and lose its ability to send/receive email. Individuals with a legitimate business need to email a large number of external email addresses are asked to use a third-party, bulk email service. Contact the I.T. Support Centre for details.

Is email offered by Humber monitored?
Humber does not monitor the content of email communications as a routine procedure; however, it reserves the right to access email content in select circumstances. Refer to the “Acceptable Use Policy for Digital Services” for more information.

What is happening with HMail?

Is there an Electronic Mail policy at Humber, and if so, where do I find it?
Yes, the policy is posted at https://humber.ca/legal-and-risk-management/policies.html along with other Humber policies.

How do students get help and/or support for Microsoft 365 services?
Students should contact the I.T. Support Centre at 416.675.6622 x8888 or humber.ca/techtalk for support. Service is available 24 hours a day and it is free.

Dear colleagues,

It was wonderful to see you at the President’s Breakfast to welcome our new President and CEO, Dr. Anne Marie Vaughan and celebrate the return of the academic term.

Each successive year builds on past achievements and holds promise for an even greater future. I am energized with the return to life on campus as we come together to work, learn and live in our Humber community.

Marking these milestones indicate distances reached, heralded progress, triumphant moments, and the celebration of achievements. Personally, I am celebrating five years serving FAST as the senior dean. Celebrating the accomplishments of our community is a joy and privilege.

It has been an exceptional experience for me to carry out this work with so many dedicated members of the FAST community, including members of our program advisory committee, alumni, industry partners, associate deans, program coordinators, faculty members, staff and student leaders, friends, and more than 6,000 students.

I humbly share with you the FAST Senior Dean’s Impact Report: 2017-2022 — a culmination of our collaborative approach and achievements these past five years.

Often, we are so engrossed in the journey, plodding away day after day, that we don’t realize how much progress we’re making until we stop and look back. Many small steps create a journey and if we don’t stop and look around, we’re going to miss some spectacular views. I hope you will take the time to dive into this comprehensive report that chronicles and celebrates the collective achievements of the Humber FAST community and join us as we look back at how far we’ve come and the exciting journey ahead.

It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to serve the FAST community at Humber College. I look forward to continuing this journey and enjoying the view with the Humber community.

With gratitude,

Farzad Rayegani, Ph.D., P.Eng., FEC.
Senior Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology

A red, wooden sculpture depicting the bow and stern of a boat in the foreground with red, origami paper boats in a circular pattern on the wall in the background

Humber Galleries' first new installation of the fall semester has arrived! ‘Bloody Boats + Voyage I’ by Arkshata Naik is now on display at the North Campus LRC Concourse!

'Bloody Boats + Voyage I’ is an art installation about deconstructing and dismantling the symbol of the traumatic journey that immigrants experience. This piece is as dynamic as an immigrant's journey. The journey of a settler is not only a physical transition, but also a cognitive and social transition that revolves around multiple socio-political narratives.

To the artist, this installation represents a personal experience as an immigrant and seeks to echo several voices like hers through similar unsettling journeys which resonate with a large global population of migrants and refugees, both locally and globally. The subject is inspired by narratives illustrating how humans are struggling to strike a balance between virtual life and reality, full of economic distress and devastation, resulting in conscious migration decisions.

Akshata is a graduate from Humber’s Postgraduate Certificate in Arts Administration and Cultural Management.

This is only part one of this collaborative installation. You can join Akshata at one of our drop-in workshops during the week of September 12-16 to create your own origami paper boats that will become part of ‘Bloody Boats + Voyage I’ for the remainder of this school year.

Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan walks in the gym with Humber Hawk

Good afternoon,

Thank you to those of you who were able to join us for the President’s Breakfast this morning. There was tremendous energy in the room, and it was a pleasure to be able to meet so many of you on my second day. For those who were not in attendance, I hope to be able to see more of you very soon and wanted to share my remarks.

All the best for the start of the fall term.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan
President and CEO

Hello Humber! Good morning and welcome.

Thank you, Jason, for beginning today’s breakfast with an Acknowledgment that provides context for both the history of the land that Humber is on today and the Peoples who stewarded its care for generations.

I am so pleased to be here and to be able to have so many of you joining us this morning in this great Humber tradition. Welcome to the Humber Breakfast Dance Party!

First, I’d like to take a moment to recognize current and former members of our board of governors, our past presidents John Davies and Robert (Squee) Gordon, Humber’s executive team, Dr. Melanie Spence-Ariemma, Vice-Provost and Chief Academic Officer, University of Guelph-Humber, and our honoured guests.

I am a big believer in the importance of tradition. It’s part of what helps define a community or a family.

One of the reasons that I decided to make the move to Humber was that everyone I speak to highlights the deeply rooted feeling of community and connection here. From everything I have seen, heard and learned so far, they were right. Way to make someone from a small town feel welcome! Humber is able to balance all the benefits of a large institution, while keeping its community focus – that is truly remarkable and says something about the history and culture of this place.

I understand that the President’s Breakfast is typically a time to review the achievements of the past year and look ahead to what’s next. However, this year, the President’s Breakfast is a little different...as is the President!

The community is coming together for the first time since 2019 for this event. As it has in the past, it still marks the beginning of a new academic calendar year and gives us a good reason to connect and enjoy some amazing food together.

I know I am grateful to be able to have the chance to meet so many of you today and I can imagine how grateful the entire Humber community is to be able gather in a way that was not possible the last two years.

It’s also a great time to welcome those who are new to Humber and are participating in this event for the first time. I have been here a whole 24 hours, so I guess I fall into that category as well.

Also, a special note of congratulations to the 2022 President’s Awards recipients who will be honoured later this morning for their contributions to Humber. I can’t wait to hear more about each of them and their accomplishments. It’s achievements like these that set Humber apart.

What I would like to do is share with you what makes me so excited to be a part of Humber. There really is no place like it.

Humber and all the amazing people who work here put students at the centre of everything. Working collectively to determine the services, supports and opportunities that will help students succeed no matter which program they are in – it’s what you do.

Humber is Canada’s pre-eminent college. This is in part to the excellent teaching from our expert faculty and to our dedicated support staff who often go above and beyond to contribute to learners’ success.

Humber has a special place in the province, and in the country. Its polytechnic approach blends the practical and theoretical, providing students with hands-on learning and experience.

This is one of the differentiators that attracted me to Humber, and one of the reasons why the Unlimited fundraising campaign has been so successful.

With the mass disruption in society today caused in part by the pandemic and climate change, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to take on the challenges faced locally, provincially, nationally and globally.

Humber’s Centres of Innovation (COIs) embody the College’s polytechnic approach in action. The COIs provide an experiential learning environment for Humber students and prepare them to become tomorrow’s creative and strategic problem-solvers.

The COIs connect students to businesses and community organizations empowering them to meet today’s economic and social challenges through innovation and collaboration.

Humber has the people, the expertise and the infrastructure to propel the workforce of today and tomorrow, and the college is uniquely positioned to continue to work with governments, industry and community on post-pandemic recovery.

There is good reason why Humber is ranked as the top research college in Ontario and number two in Canada. In the last two years Humber has won CICAN Gold Awards of Excellence for Internationalization and Indigenous education.

Because whether we are focusing on our student services, our role in advancing reconciliation or in tackling skills shortages and meeting labour market needs, we start from a place of asking: “how can we help?”

As Humber’s incoming President and CEO, I plan to listen, learn and continue to build on the successes of the amazing people, programs and priorities that make the college everything it is already.

I look forward to contributing to an environment focused on and committed to sustainability, equity, diversity and inclusion, and integrating Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing.

I plan to learn about the services and supports that help students succeed and the student and alumni achievements that make everyone proud. I will cheer on the Humber Hawks every chance I get. Go Hawks!

In a few moments a video presentation will showcase some of the updated and newest places and spaces at the North and Lakeshore campuses and the International Graduate School. I can’t wait to tour them all in person soon.

This fall, we will launch several new plans, including a new Academic plan, a refreshed Digital Campus plan, and a plan for Continuous Professional Learning. We look forward to sharing more details on those this term through town halls and other meetings.

Before I conclude, I have some specific thank yous.

Thank you to Nancy Brennan and the rest of the committee for planning today’s breakfast.

Thank you to Chris Irwin for emceeing today’s event and to Ginger Grant who will be introducing the President’s Awards winners.

To the amazing faculty and staff, though I have only had a chance to meet a handful of you so far, your ongoing commitment to students and each other shines through. I look forward to the opportunity to connect with more of you in the coming weeks.

Together with the Humber community, I look forward to continuing to support students and professional learners. We will write the next chapter of our history by building the college’s infrastructure, research capacity, industry partnerships, work-integrated learning opportunities and so much more.

Ontario college graduates play an important role in society, often building their careers in the communities in which they live and learn, and that is what I want for Etobicoke, the Greater Toronto area and Humber.

As I learn more about the people, businesses and organizations that surround Humber, I am excited for students and graduates to continue to build the college’s local and international reputation by making a difference wherever they are.

I'm thrilled to be started and joining this amazing team!

Thank you for having breakfast with me today and I wish you every success in the year ahead.
