The Student Wellness and Equitable Learning (SWEL) team is proud to announce that the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS) has named the SWEL Curricular Framework as the recipient of the 2023 CACUSS Innovation Award.

The SWEL Curricular Framework provides a structured approach to designing and delivering programs and initiatives that support student learning and well-being, with a focus on intentional outcomes. Over the last two years, the SWEL team collaborated with learners and educators to identify learning domains, establish pathways, and cultivate a sense of belonging through intentional programming and initiatives rooted in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and critical approaches to care and healing.

Launched officially in September 2022, the SWEL Curricular Framework reflects the expertise, passion, and experience of our team, learners, and colleagues across the institution. Furthermore, the Framework encapsulates our values-driven approach to supporting holistic learner wellbeing and success while also advocating for, and fostering conditions to facilitate, larger systemic change at Humber and beyond.

The CACUSS Awards will be taking place virtually on the evening of Thursday, April 27 at 7 p.m. EDT.

For more information about CACUSS Awards and the 2023 CACUSS Awards Gala visit the website.

About the Innovation Award

The CACUSS Innovation Award recognizes a new or innovative program or service on a campus that has been developed with participation or leadership by a CACUSS member institution or individual. The program or service exemplifies innovation and excellence, and could serve as a model or example of promising practice for other CACUSS member institutions.

The program/service innovation must be connected to priorities/commitments of CACUSS, as determined by the Board of Directors, which may change from time to time. Currently, the program/service should demonstrate innovation in one of the three areas the Board has committed to in the CACUSS Strategic Plan: Indigenization; Equity, Diversity & Inclusion; and Health & Wellness.

Programs or services can be nominated in one of three categories: Small-size Institution (1 – 9,999 students), Medium-size Institution (10,000 – 19,999 students), or Large-size Institution (20,000 or more students).

Humber knows that the conflict currently taking place in Sudan between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces may impact members of the College community, particularly those with family or friends living there or in bordering countries.

We know that those impacted by this conflict stretch well beyond the Sudanese borders. We also understand that the news of this conflict may impact anyone who has experienced similar conflict and trauma in their lives or home countries.

We know that Faculty and staff provide compassionate responses to students affected by this type of humanitarian crisis, ensuring that Humber remains a supportive environment. Faculty and staff are encouraged to consider how they can provide both flexibility and support to students who are struggling to manage competing priorities that emerge during times of crisis.

Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber have supports available to those who may need it.

Students in need of mental health counselling can contact the Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre for support and information. Staff and students may also connect with the Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion for additional support or information.

If you would like to access services outside of Humber, below is a list of mental health services:

Staff may also access Employee Assistance Plan services.

Students with known ties to Sudan will be receiving a separate direct communication to provide additional touchpoints for support.

This may be a difficult time for many, and we thank you for your compassion and for understanding the experiences of all members of the diverse Humber community at this time.

Take care,

Jason Hunter  Interim Vice-President, Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness  Vice-President, Students and Institutional Planning

Dear Colleagues

I am writing to share that Brad Herd will be leaving Humber to begin a new phase of his life with his family in Nova Scotia.

As many of you know, Brad has been at Humber for over 15 years serving students and faculty as a mentor, professor, program coordinator and most recently as Associate Dean for the Longo Faculty of Business. As Associate Dean, Brad has already made a difference to the teaching and learning environment for Business students. He has been an advocate for industry partners to be part of many classroom activities and presentations. He was instrumental in the development of the Stack & Stay Longer international marketing campaign in attracting students to graduate programs at Humber.

Brad has made numerous contributions within and beyond the Longo Faculty of Business. He was dedicated to students and their success. He worked closely with Diane Simpson, Principal, Humber IGS, ensuring that our international students were equipped to succeed in their new environment.

Brad, you will be missed as a leader, innovator and supportive educator. I wish you and your family all the best in Nova Scotia.  The Longo Faculty of Business and Humber will miss you as a member of our family.

Dear Faculty Members,

The Testing Services team is working diligently to ensure that all final exams are sent to faculty as soon as possible. We kindly ask for your patience and understanding as we handle hundreds of exams per day. Please note that faculty may not always receive completed exams as soon as students check out from the Test Centre, but may only receive their exam later in the evening, depending on the volume of appointments for the day.

We understand that this delay may cause some inconvenience, and we want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to expedite the process. Our priority is to ensure that each exam is sent back accurately and in a timely manner.

Sincerely,
Testing Services Team

I am writing to share that Martine Spinks has elected to leave her position of Associate Dean, Design and Built Environment, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, in order to scale back and focus on priorities related to her family.

During her time at Humber, Martine made numerous contributions within and beyond FAST. She led several international projects, including the creation of a very successful COIL project. She also initiated international partnerships, providing students and faculty with opportunities to study and engage abroad. Martine was instrumental in growing applied research opportunities in FAST and she championed numerous quality assurance processes. Her commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion was felt in many ways and included a focus on decolonizing the curriculum.

Martine's commitment to students was significant and she made a difference to the student experience by ensuring that students had a voice within FAST.

Martine was known for collaborating across the academic division, creating innovative interdisciplinary opportunities for students, staff and faculty in several programs. She was collegial and shared her ideas and expertise freely.

Martine's passion for higher education was always apparent and I am grateful that she has been a part of the Humber team.  I would like to thank her for her many contributions to Humber and for her commitment to our students, staff and faculty.

Her last day at Humber is June 2, please join me in wishing Martine well.

Sincerely,

Gina Antonacci
Senior Vice-President, Academic
