As you may know, Residence conducts fire drills every September to ensure our residents would be ready in an emergency. The specific date of the drills are not shared with our residents. However, we have notified them that it will take place the week of September 19-22, and what they should do any time a fire alarm goes off so they can be prepared.

We understand that it is possible that a student may be in an online class while in residence when the drill takes place. Residents are expected to participate in the drill regardless of what they are doing at the time, and we ask that instructors who are teaching online courses after 5 p.m. this week to be understanding of the circumstances should a resident need to evacuate for the drill.

Hello Humber community,

Earlier this week, the Government of Canada declared Monday September 19th as a national holiday for federal government employees to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Government of Ontario has decided against a statutory holiday. Instead, Premier Ford said Ontario will mark September 19 as a provincial day of mourning and that Ontarians may observe a moment of silence at 1 p.m. on that day.

On Monday, Humber classes, work and operations will continue as regularly scheduled. The college will be observing a moment of silence at 1 p.m. and invite all members of the Humber community to join in silent reflection, if they choose. Managers and faculty members who are teaching during that time are asked to provide the opportunity for employees and students to participate in the moment of silence. An announcement will be made across Humber’s public address system to note the beginning and end of the moment of silence.

Humber’s Office of Research & Innovation (ORI) presents its “Annual Report 2021-2022!

Humber’s Office of Research & Innovation (ORI) presents its Annual Report 2021-2022!

In a year of constant change and disruption, Humber’s research and innovation community has continued to lead, transform and differentiate through collaborating with industry and community partners and providing unparalleled learning opportunities to students.

Humber College now ranks as the #2 research college in Canada and #1 research college in Ontario, thanks to the growing research and innovation ecosystem enabled by all six Humber faculties, emerging and seasoned researchers, staff, and students, as well as the Centres of Innovation and the strong network of internal and external partners.

ORI’s Annual Report 21/22 spotlights Humber’s research philosophy, who we are, and how we approach research and innovation. Take a look at the breadth and depth of research projects contributing to Humber’s growing research portfolio. In addition, ORI sheds light on the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) and Humber Press. Also, read about Humber’s rock star researchers who collaborate with industry and community partners to solve real-world challenges, from affordable housing to 3D landfill modelling to youth crime and gang violence reduction. The report also highlights various training and capacity-building initiatives and dissemination opportunities that the ORI team provides in every step of the research and innovation journey, from when an idea is a spark of curiosity to sharing the impact of the research results. We continue to demystify innovation by supporting an inclusive innovation and research culture that celebrates low-cost/no-cost solutions to everyday problems.

Ginger Grant, PhD., dean, Research & Innovation, and Tania Massa, PhD., associate dean, Applied Research & Innovation, welcome you into Humber’s research and innovation community with their forewords. As Dean Ginger Grant, PhD., expresses, “An idea is all it takes to begin the journey to research and innovation.”

We invite you to join us as we look back on a year of growth, resilience, and success, and we encourage you to share with us the ideas and questions that spark your curiosity. In the meantime, we look forward to creating new pathways for our wider Humber and growing research and innovation community to walk and talk “research” and “innovation.”

  • Many students with disabilities require more time to consolidate and process what they have learned. This may involve advanced access to and frequent review of their readings and notes ahead of any quizzes.
  • Quizzes are practical scaffolding tools and if they are part of your lesson plan, please set these to be completed outside class time or provide a scheduled date. Pop quizzes during class or directly after class put many students, including those with disabilities, at a disadvantage.
  • Consider an alternative to quizzes such as a take-home application assignment or written reflection due by the next class.

Visit our Accessible Learning Services faculty site to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.
