The Staff Lounge Podcast: Interdiscplinary Collaboration, Part 1

New episode of the Staff Lounge Podcast launches today: The Magic Ingredient: Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Perfecting the recipe for student success? Could interdisciplinary collaboration be the magic ingredient?

In this episode, professor Shirantha Beddage chats with Bakery and Culinary Arts professor, Kenneth Ku, and Web Design and Interactive Technology professor, David Neumann about their exciting professional collaboration that brings together Culinary and Media students. Professors Ku and Neumann share how they developed a successful interdisciplinary collaboration that’s created an exciting and professionally rewarding learning experience for faculty and learners.

This episode celebrates how Humber faculty are working together, moving out of their professional silos and creating key professional partnerships. This perfect pairing is a powerful example of what makes Humber an innovative leader in Higher Education.

"For instance, we make chocolate and we always had to purchase the molds. I didn’t know David had all these 3D printing machines; they had mold making machines. And so, we can customize things, right? That’s how it started, just seeing that every department can do these things."- Kenneth Ku, Professor, Baking & Pastry Arts Management, Faculty of Business

"For those students who have an idea and want to prototype, they now know there’s a way of getting it out of their head and out into the world, without having to doubt: ‘how am I going to make this custom mold? ‘What about my own ideas? How can I do that, and express myself?’ So, entrepreneurship is one of the huge areas that this is helpful for. But it’s also your own voice saying, 'I want to try this.'" - David Neumann, PC, Web Design and Interactive Media & User Experience Design, Faculty of Media and Creative Arts

We are pleased to announce Cory Gill has joined Humber as our second Application Architect in Enterprise Applications. Cory has spent his career as an Application Architect with the Ontario Treasury Board Secretariat, after first starting out as a developer, then team lead and also a delivery lead as his career progressed.

Cory is really looking forward to meeting his new Humber colleagues and getting the opportunity to help guide, shape and support Humber's technology ecosystem.

Fun fact: Aside from application architecture and solution delivery responsibilities, Cory dedicated a significant amount of time expanding and developing the Ontario Treasury Board Secretariat's co-op program for students. He has been consistently thrilled with the calibre of students coming out of the Ontario college programs including fine students coming from Humber college!

Staci Lindsay, Accounts Payable Manager at Humber College, has had a passion for accounting since she was in high school. Today, she leads Humber’s Accounts Payable team and is responsible for managing outgoing payments to vendors while ensuring that they are issued on a timely basis.

Sustainability plays a significant role in Staci's life. As an avid camper and lover of the great outdoors, Staci is an advocate for the protection of our natural resources. “I appreciate our natural resources. Depleting natural resources not only affects us now but also our future which will have an impact on my children", Staci said.

Over the past few years, the demand for green businesses has grown rapidly. Many consumers and employees believe that brands bear as much responsibility for positive environmental changes as governments, and many are demanding that businesses commit to making a change. Staci decided to be a part of that change.

At Humber, Staci has used her passion for sustainability to invoke change within her department by creating a paperless environment. “Over the years I have seen an increase in paper usage, and I wanted to reduce the amount of paper handled in our day-to-day operations. This would be a big task to take on as handling paper in AP was the norm for many years,” Staci said.
