Did you receive an Accessible Learning Services Accommodation Letter? Unsure how to proceed? Review the steps below.   

  • Send an email to the learner to acknowledge receipt of the Accommodation Letter.  

  • Accommodations Letters can be distributed to faculty in two ways, either by ALS through the Faculty Web Portal or directly from learners. Learners advise ALS of their delivery preference.  

  • Learners with Accommodation Letters requiring a Medical Response Plan will be sent directly to faculty via email and will not be available on the Faculty Portal.   

  • Carefully review the Accommodation Letter. If you identify an accommodation that you feel may conflict with the essential requirements of your course, contact the Accessibility Consultant listed on the letter.

  • Review the ‘Services for Faculty’ page to learn how to upload tests for learners needing testing accommodations with Testing Services  

  • Advise the learner that they are welcome to contact you to discuss the accommodations.

May 1 to May 6 was Safety and Health Week. All week long, Occupational Health and Safety Services sent out health and safety-related information to celebrate Safety and Health Week. In case you missed any of the posts, please view the attachments.

On the final day, an opportunity to win some prizes was announced. And you still have time. Click on the link below to complete a quiz regarding the Safety and Health Week topics that were published in the Communiqué. Fill in your name and email, answer the 10 questions, and you will have the opportunity to win one of three $15 Humber food gift cards, which can be used for any food service outlet at both the North and Lakeshore campuses. The GARDENS is currently looking for volunteers for the May-September 2023 season to join the GARDENS Project Pod Squads!
 
The GARDENS Project features 13 raised garden beds (“pods”) that are scattered throughout South Etobicoke. The pods grow fresh produce, which is then given back to the community to help combat food insecurity. Each volunteer will be assigned to a pod, and will join a weekly watering schedule to maintain the plants!
 
Previous gardening experience is not necessary - everyone is welcome.

Nursing Week, May 8 to 14, is the annual celebration of the profession and an opportunity to recognize nurses in all roles and sectors. We celebrate our nurses at the SWAC Health Care Centre and throughout SWEL.

The following six (6) micro-credentials have been developed specifically for Humber faculty by the Innovative Learning team. All micro-credentials are delivered in an asynchronous online format. Each micro-credential consists of four modules, or 12 hours of curriculum delivery. Micro-credential participants who achieve 50 per cent or more in all assessments will receive a badge.  

There is no fee or cost associated to register for the micro-credential. Please note that space is limited. Offered internally to active Humber employees only. 

First offering begins: May 15
Second offering begins: July 10

Assessments for Learning  
Focuses on assessments and evaluations in the teaching and learning cycle. Faculty will consider ways to design and deliver assessments so that they are part of the learning process instead of a product of learning.  

Curriculum Design & Development 
Familiarizes faculty with the curriculum development process. Faculty will review ways to plan and create a well-designed and thoughtfully sequenced curriculum for a course or program.  

Educational Technology and Accessibility           
An introduction to accessibility, applications with technology and how these considerations can increase inclusion for all learners. Faculty will be able to assess variability in various learning environments in order to establish accessibility needs and select edtech tools to support their access.  

Equity and Anti-Oppressive Teaching in Post-Secondary Education 
Intended to build capacity among Humber College staff in relation to equitable and anti-oppressive teaching. Participants will become familiar with the core tenets of equitable and anti-oppressive teaching, including identifying one’s own positionality, distinguishing between equality and equity, and engaging in critical self-reflexivity.  

Facilitating Learning 
Engages faculty to think about the strategies to create impactful and intentional learning experiences. Throughout the MC, faculty will consider how the facilitation of content – whether in a classroom or other setting – can support learning and professional development.  

Teaching and Learning in HyFlex Environments 
Introduces faculty to the methods, practices, and tools for adapting an existing in-person lesson plan for HyFlex teaching. Faculty will review strategies and methods to create a learning experience that engages learners in all three modalities and ensures an equivalent experience for all students.

​We invite proposals that both celebrate and investigate the many dimensions of this year’s Showcase theme, authentic. Please submit a proposal for Workshops, Exhibits, and/or Sharing Circles.   

Workshop 

A Workshop is a 60-minute session designed for you to share a component of your teaching practice that is tied to the theme of “authentic”.  Did you adapt to an authentic assessment?  Did you take a new approach to enable learners to express their learning in a way that was more authentic to their lived experience? How did the changes you made translate into optimal and authentic learner experiences?   

Your goal will be to lead your colleagues in the exploration of the processes you used or created and to inspire them to use your experience as a guide for their innovation. Examples of workshops could include innovative teaching and learning practices, interdisciplinary projects, and other areas of expertise related to teaching and learning. Your workshop should be interactive and reflective of our shared goal of authentic teaching and learning.   

Exhibit 

The Exhibit Centre will run through the lunch hour and gives Faculties and Departments the opportunity to showcase what they do and how they support the greater Humber community. This year, exhibits will return to an in-person experience. Exhibitors can highlight recent, current, or future Humber projects, or initiatives. This is a great opportunity to bring the Humber community together for conversation, sharing and networking.  

Sharing Circle 

A Sharing Circle is a respectful place for listening, learning, and sharing. Each member has an opportunity to share their experiences and one person speaks at a time with no interruptions. The circle is all inclusive and for that reason everyone’s voice is listened to and respected.   

Sharing Circles will be 60 minutes in length and will have a maximum number of in-person members. Sharing circles have a theme or issue and one member will facilitate. Each facilitator who proposes a sharing circle should follow the attached guidelines and consider requesting to meet with a member of the Indigenous Education & Engagement team to learn the full protocol. Example themes could include sharing experiences of inclusion, or of successes where new approaches have removed barriers for learners, ways to ensure that diverse voices are heard and valued at Humber, experiences that would resonate with and support other faculty.

Advising & Career Services is excited to announce that registration for the eighth Annual Advising Conference is opening soon!

This year’s conference includes a variety of hybrid sessions from May 16 to 18 with a focus on the theme of A Space for All to Succeed: Making Inclusion a Reality. 

We look forward to having advisors, program coordinators, faculty, and staff from all departments and academic Faculties at Humber and Guelph-Humber join us to discuss, share, and learn about advising techniques, skills, and issues that affect us all. The conference will include presentations on compassionate practice, Nonviolent Communication, practices for enhancing student well-being and belonging, international student challenges and supports, envisioning inclusion at Humber, self-care wellness activities, and more!
