I am writing today to let you know that Kelly Morrow, Director of Financial Services, will be leaving Humber effective June 11 to pursue other opportunities outside of the post-secondary sector.

Since joining Humber in 2010, Kelly has held progressive roles, initially as the Manager, Financial Strategic Projects then the Associate Director and most recently as the Director. In addition to her job responsibility, Kelly has played an instrumental role in numerous initiatives across the institution. Her strong leadership and project management skills have contributed to the successful implementation of Banner, Finance and Student, Chrome River Pcard and more recently Travel & Expense functionality, HRMS and REEP projects. She was also responsible for the successful conversion of Humber’s Financial Reporting to PSAB standard.

Kelly has been an integral and valued member of several college and sector-level committees including TIMS and CPSMC. Additionally, she has been an executive member of COFO as well as Chair of its Financial Reporting Subcommittee.

We will be planning a Teams farewell get-together on Wednesday, June 9 at 3 p.m. and the link will be circulated closer to the event date. I hope you will join me in wishing Kelly the best of success in all future endeavours.

The posting for Kelly’s replacement will be posted in the coming days.

Dr. Sarah Duni (she/her), professor and course director at the University of Guelph-Humber (UofGH), explains that the past 10 years of teaching at UofGH have flown by in the blink of an eye and have been the most rewarding.

“My career choices have always been motivated by the [drive] to do justice, love, kindness, and walk humbly and also the need to really defend the rights of those who are often excluded,” explained Sarah. “This prompted my involvement in community development work very early on in my undergraduate studies, as I participated in a number of community-university partnerships.”

Some of the new Chrome River features:

  • Paperless/online processing
  • Fully integrated with Banner Finance
  • Automated spend control and approval routing
  • Mobile access and approvals
  • Online Business Expense Cash Advance management
  • Online dashboards and self-service inquiries
  • Easily attach receipts to expense report (i.e. PDF attachments, email attachments, snap photo of receipt and attach), thus replacing paper receipts
  • Optical character recognition (OCR) receipt processing

How can I access Chrome River?

Starting this week and until mid/late June, the new Travel & Expense Reimbursement Process (including Business Expense Cash Advances) is being rolled out on a Faculty-by-Faculty and Department-by-Department basis. Faculty/staff who have been identified by their Business Manager as someone who may be submitting re-imbursement requests over the next 6 months will be sent an introductory email during the week of their deployment. The introductory email will contain information regarding training and live support sessions. New/refresher training and live support will be provided in fall 2021 for anyone who was notified and missed their roll-out week.

Faculty/staff who will not be submitting requests over the next six months can be added to Chrome River on an “as needed basis”. Please contact your Business Manager to submit a Chrome River security eForm request on your behalf.

How do I submit my reimbursement request if I have not been notified to use Chrome River?

Please continue to use the PDF paper format for submitting your request until such time that you are provided with a Chrome River account.

Enhancing Institutional EDI Knowledge of Disability and Academic Accessibility:

Accessible Learning Services Best Practice Considerations - Accessible Course Materials

  • Creating accessible documents present considerations beyond how the content is laid out on a page.
  • Readability and comprehension by a wide audience, including persons with sensory impairments or learning disabilities, is important so your document needs to work well with screen reading software.
  • Rather than retrofitting existing course materials to address accessibility after challenges arise, it is best to create content that is accessible from the start

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about creating accessible documents.

Humber’s Teaching + Learning Support Centre also has a robust range of resources and workshops on creating accessible courses and materials, including instructions on how to create and caption videos through Panopto. Or, check out the Faculty ED Venture week podcast that was presented on March 22, 2021 providing tips on “Making your Online Content and Learning Materials More Accessible”.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

Sharing Knowledge:

May 17 is The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber (the College) is committed to providing an accessible learning, working, and living environment for the Humber community. It is the College’s goal to create a community that is inclusive of all persons and supports all members of the community in an equitable manner. In creating such a community, the College aims to foster a climate of understanding and mutual respect for the dignity and worth of all persons.

May 17: The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

What is May 17: A Worldwide Celebration of Sexual and Gender Diversities1

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia was created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.

The date of May 17 was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

May 17 is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal. Thousands of initiatives, big and small, are reported throughout the planet.

May 17 represents a major global annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, corporations, opinion leaders, local authorities, etc. to the alarming situation faced by people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is not one centralized campaign; rather it is a moment that everyone can take advantage of to take action, on whatever issue and in whatever format that they wish. Many different entities participate in the global mobilization around May 17. Some organizations add Lesbophobia or Intersexphobia as distinct focuses. Acronyms also vary, from the initial IDAHO to IDAHOTB or IDAHOBIT. The Day is not one central trademarked brand and everyone is free to communicate as they wish.

The theme in Canada is: ‘For some, showing their colours isn’t a choice’. For Prime Minster Justin Trudeau this theme “highlights the difficult reality that many LGBTQ2 people continue to face high rates of harassment, bullying, and violent crimes”. 2   ”As governments and as citizens, we all have a role to play to make sure LGBTQ2 people feel safe and supported and can participate fully in society”. 3

To learn more about how you can better ensure 2SLGBTQ+ college members feel safe and supported, please refer to the recently updated Gender Diversity Policy.
