Humber and UofGH promotional image

Throughout the pandemic, Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber (UofGH) have followed the recommendations of Public Health. Now, Public Health is asking us to get vaccinated when it is our turn.

Vaccines are now widely available in Ontario, with restrictions being lowered regularly, and it may be your turn to get the shot. Health and safety are a shared responsibility. In Ontario, it is estimated that somewhere between 56% to 89% of individuals will need to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to achieve herd immunity. Whether working on campus or remotely, we encourage you to get vaccinated, unless medically advised otherwise. Getting vaccinated will help protect the Humber community now and into the future.

The Osler-Humber College COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic, located on the first floor of the University of Guelph-Humber at North Campus is now vaccinating people 12 years and older who have not yet received their first shot. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are encouraged. Make one at http://ow.ly/btSB50EVI8W, or by phone at 905-494-6685.

The more Humber and UofGH staff and students who get vaccinated, the sooner we can all be together.

More information about COVID-19 vaccines can be found here.

The 2020 Humber Varsity Graduation Tour has earned Humber College its second Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Innovation Award.

Notwithstanding the COVID-19 pandemic, Varsity Academic Coordinator Mallory Lawton desperately wanted graduating student-athletes at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) institution to experience some sort of special ceremony and the 'Graduation Tour' was created.

Lawton travelled across Ontario to bring a socially distanced graduation ceremony to nearly 50 Humber student-athletes. She created personalized signs, with caps and gowns, bringing graduation to their homes.

Enhancing Institutional EDI Knowledge of Disability and Academic Accessibility:

  • Remind students to notify you in advance if they require test/exam accommodations.
  • Post reminders on Blackboard (Humber) or CourseLink (Guelph-Humber) of upcoming test/exam dates.
  • Consider creating two (2) versions of each test/exam to cover situations where students may need to write on a different day than the rest of the class for disability-related reasons or other extenuating circumstances.
  • Consider opening the test/exam for a window of time (e.g. 24 hours) to allow students some additional flexibility.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion has updated Humber’s Gender Diversity Policy. This policy outlines Humber’s position on the responsibilities of the College, students and employees with respect to protecting gender expression and gender identity consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code.

The policy outlines the Humber Community’s commitments in several key areas, including but not limited to the following: privacy and confidentiality, all-gender washrooms, change rooms and gender-inclusive language.

Some highlights of the policy are outlined below:

  • Self-identification is the sole and whole measure of a person’s gender. (Section 1.2)
  • All-Gender Washrooms (Section 5)

5.1 All members of the College community have the right to safe washroom facilities that correspond to their gender identity or gender expression.

5.3 Gender-designated washrooms are located throughout the College. All members of the College community may choose to use any accessible all-gender washroom, regardless of their reason(s) for doing so.

5.5 Inclusive signage shall be used to identify every all-gender washroom for College campuses.

  • Gender Inclusive Language (Section 8)

8.1 All individuals within the College community are entitled to be referred to by the gender pronoun(s) of their choice.

8.3 All members of the College community are strongly encouraged to and will be supported in their endeavours to communicate using gender-inclusive language that is respectful and recognizes the inherent and equal worth of all gender identities and gender expressions. This includes creating and using documentation that includes options outside of “male” and “female”, and that is welcoming of gender diverse people.

In the coming months, the Centre will be proving education and training on Gender Diversity. To see a list of all upcoming events, please contact Sacha Ally at sacha.ally@humber.ca or at 416.675.6622 x4808.

Here's how the social media contest works:

  1. Sign up here and earn your first entry into the contest.
  2. Share a photo of yourself on a bike ride during the month of June for another entry. Simply send the photo via direct message or tag us (@SustainHumber and #HumberBikeChallenge)—don’t forget to display your rainbow clothing and/or accessories in the photo proudly!

Note: There is no limit to the number of entries accepted. To be eligible to win, participants must be a current Humber or University of Guelph-Humber student, staff or faculty member residing in Canada.
