Today, the provincial government announced that Ontario will move to Step One of the Roadmap to Reopen on Friday, June 11 at 12:01 a.m.

Step One of the Roadmap focuses on the resumption of more outdoor activities with smaller crowds where risk of transmission is lower. It will also permit more limited indoor settings to be open, all with restrictions in place. 

Full details of the announcement can be found here. Additional details, as they may apply to Humber, will be shared in the coming days.

As announced a short time ago, Christina Alcena has moved from the Manager, Equity and Student Life position, to fill Melanie Chai’s vacancy as the Interim Associate Director, Advising and Career Services until November, 2022. We have completed our interview process and I am excited to announce that Kimberly Daniels will be our Interim Manager, Equity and Student Life. 

Kimberly has been at Humber for over 14 years. She began as a student at UGH earning her Honours Bachelor Degree of Applied Arts in Media Studies with a Diploma in Public Relations. She began her career at Humber with IGNITE, and recently moved to SSE with roles as a Career Resource Developer and her current position (until June 4) as the Orientation and Student Life Programs Coordinator. Kimberly was responsible for taking Humber’s Orientation program fully online after a grand total of about two weeks on the job. Over the last year she has collaborated with staff, faculty and students to create an innovative, effective and vital orientation program that helps support students in their transition to life at Humber. 

Kimberly has been active in advancing equity and inclusion initiatives at Humber as a member of the Black/African Employee Resource Group and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Taskforce. She has also worked to embed equity practices within Orientation – and Student Life, through trainings, collaborations and inclusive content creation. She continues to advance these goals by completing a certification as a Culturally Inclusive Educator along with an Honours Certification in Teaching and Training Adults. 

Kimberly brings her skills as communicator, collaborator and community builder to this position. She is passionate in her approach to supporting students and ensuring we are examining and addressing where we need to act on issues of equity and inclusion.

Thank you for participating in Showcase 2021: Amplify!

The conference was a day full of learning, collaboration and networking with colleagues. From the Welcoming Remarks and Awards Presentation, Sessions, Marketplace, and our Keynote Speaker, john a. powell, we hope that you were inspired and took away ideas on how to further amplify your voice and efforts in pursuing a sense of belonging at Humber.

About the Registry (Article 26.10)

The Partial-Load Registry allows current or previously employed partial-load employees of Humber College to register their interest in being employed as a partial-load faculty for the 2022 calendar year. Registered partial-load employees will be eligible for priority hiring for available partial-load work based on the criteria set out in Article 26.10 of the OPSEU Academic Collective Agreement. To learn more about the Registry, visit the Humber Faculty Union website.

When and where do I register?

We are pleased to announce that registration for the 2022 calendar year will begin on June 10, 2021. The deadline to register is October 30, 2021. Please note that registration in previous years does not carry over; all faculty must register their interest annually. The college and union highly encourage all partial-load faculty to tender a submission for the Partial-Load Registry.

In order to register for the Partial-Load Registry, please find the access point on the front page of the Humber Human Resources webpage or go to the link at hrs.humber.ca/partialloadregistry.

To register, you will require your Humber employee number as well as your N number. Your Humber employee number can be found on your pay stub, or you can ask your supervisor for it. You N number is used to log into the system. Once you register, you will receive an email confirmation at the email address provided. Please retain the confirmation for your records.

Humber College continues to make regular contributions to The League for Innovation in the Community College publication. 

Humber’s initiative “Digital Fluency for the Workforce” (DFW) Stackable Micro-credentials, spearheaded by COWD (Community Outreach and Workforce Development), led by Nivedita Lane, Project Lead and Principal Investigator of the DFW Project, funded by Future Skills Centre (FSC), was chosen as the centerpiece of League’s June iStream.

215: Every Child Matters

Humber Libraries mourns the loss of the 215 children found at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia, and recognizes this tragedy as part of an ongoing legacy of racism, discrimination and violence against Indigenous peoples in Canada.

At the library, we continue to build resource collections that uncover the truth of the genocide that occurred in Canada's Residential School system. We work to find resources that include residential school survivor's stories so that these legacies, ongoing traumas, and truths are not lost.

From May 30 to June 5, Canada celebrates National AccessAbility Week!

This year’s message focuses on championing last year's goal of building back better and is in line with the Government of Canada’s plan. It is an expansion of the disability-inclusive approach, initiatives and measures taken throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

In keeping with this priority, we must all work together to achieve an accessible and inclusive society making all feel part of the fabric.

#National AccessAbility Week aims to celebrate:

  • the valuable contributions of Canadians with disabilities
  • the accomplishments of individuals, communities and workplaces to remove barriers to accessibility and inclusion
  • the ongoing work we all have to do to counter discrimination against persons with disabilities and promote a culture of inclusion

Map of construction work

As part of the construction of the future Finch West Light Rail (LRT) line, crews will be working at the intersection of Humber College Blvd and Highway 27. Work is required to be done from June 1, 2021 until June 4, 2021, approximately. Eastbound curb lane at Humber College Blvd from east of Highway 27 to the west of the hospital entrance will be closed. There will be a paid duty officer and flaggers to control traffic. Sidewalks will remain open to pedestrians.

Work hours:

  • Tuesday, June 1, 2021 from 7 a.m. until June 4, 2021, at 7 p.m., approximately.
  • Work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

What to expect:

  • Heavy trucks and equipment in the area.
  • Due to the nature of this work, at times there will be noise and vibration around the work area.
  • Vibration monitors will be installed, if needed.

Traffic and pedestrian details:

  • Lane closures are required to safely conduct the work.
  • There will be one EB lane open.
  • Bus stops are not impacted.
  • Please take extra care when navigating near work zones, and always make eye contact with the driver.
  • Access to TTC will be maintained at all times.
