People of African descent have been a part of shaping Canada’s heritage and identity since the arrival of Mathieu Da Costa, a navigator and interpreter, whose presence in Canada dates back to the early 1600s.

The role of people of African descent in Canada has not always been viewed as a key feature in Canada’s historic landscape. There is little mention that some of the Loyalists who came here after the American Revolution and settled in the Maritimes were people of African descent, or of the many sacrifices made in wartime by soldiers of African descent as far back as the War of 1812.

Few Canadians are aware of the fact that African people were once enslaved in the territory that is now Canada, or of how those who fought enslavement helped to lay the foundation of Canada’s diverse and inclusive society.

Black History/Heritage Month is a time to learn more about these Canadian stories and the many other important contributions of Black Canadians to the settlement, growth and development of Canada, and about the diversity of Black communities in Canada and their importance to the history of this country.

As Humber continues to provide students with quality online and in-person learning in Winter 2021, we look for ways to assess student satisfaction with their program experiences. To meet institutional quality assurance and accreditation requirements, Humber will administer an online 24-item short version of the previous KPI student satisfaction survey. This survey will measure student satisfaction with the knowledge, skills, teaching and learning provided in their program, allowing the college to identify strengths and areas of improvement.

All students in full-time, funded programming enrolled in semesters 2 to 8 will receive a personal survey invitation through email on Friday, February 19. The survey will remain open until Sunday, March 7, 2021. Key messaging will be communicated by select instructors in each program to promote the survey and encourage completion.

For questions about the survey, please contact Christina Persaud at christina.persaud@humber.ca.

Dear faculty, staff and academic partners,

We hope that the Winter 2021 semester has started well. Testing Services is available to support learners throughout the semester as required. We will be open over the midterm examination period for both Humber and Guelph-Humber learners at both the North and Lakeshore campuses from February 22 to March 19, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We are opening with the understanding that a majority of the assessment delivery for courses will continue to support learners and provide testing, which was done over the Fall 2020 midterm period. However, we understand that the accommodation needs of some learners cannot be met in this manner, and it is in these unique circumstances that we will focus on during this period. Those unique accommodations include, but are not limited to:

  • supervising extra breaks
  • invigilation conflicts with assistive technology needs
  • paper-based examinations
  • environmental/space considerations
  • computer assisted testing which is not possible at a learner’s home
  • require a reader/scribe

We will continue to be in compliance with public health guidelines and will operate with a maximum capacity of 10 persons in our spaces at any given time, including staff. Therefore, we will be able to serve no more than seven (7) learners at both centres at any given time.

The request to write in Testing Services must be done in consultation with the learner’s Accessibility Consultant, professor, and/or Associate Dean/Program Head prior to submitting the test to Testing Services in sufficient time.

We require faculty to provide submissions to us using the Blackboard Test Referral Form or through the Online Test Submission portal through Register Blast. We will not be accepting any physical test submissions at either centre nor will we be allowing faculty to pick up completed tests during this time.

Faculty that have registered with our Online Submission Service will have any completed exams returned to them via their Humber or UGH email addresses. Remote invigilation is also available through the use of MS Teams or another platform, if necessary.

Any questions regarding our Online Test Submission service or remote invigilation can be forwarded to us by email at testingservicesnorth@humber.ca or testingserviceslake@humber.ca.

In order to avoid any delays and mitigate any barriers to the test process, we ask that faculty submit their midterms to Testing Services as per the following deadlines:

Midterms to be written the week of February 22, 2021

Must be submitted to Testing Services by 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 21, 2021

(Please email Testing Services Manager – Shane Bentham by Friday, February 19 at 2 p.m. to confirm number of students and date).

Midterms to be written the week of March 1, 2021

Must be submitted to Testing Services by Friday, February 26, 2021 at 2 p.m.

Midterms to be written the week of March 8, 2021

Must be submitted to Testing Services by Friday, March 5, 2021 at 2 p.m.

Midterms to be written the week of March 15, 2021

Must be submitted to Testing Services by Friday March 12, 2021 at 2 p.m.

Learners that will be completing their midterms at Testing Services will be required to schedule an appointment in advance on our website.  As we did during the fall final exam period, we will not be able to accommodate walk-ins during this time. For bookings at North Testing Services, please have students click here, and for Lakeshore Testing Services click here.

Learners are asked to bring only the supplies or items that they need to complete testing and adhere to all physical distancing and COVID-19 protocols as required to maintain a safe testing environment for all.

We look forward to returning to campus to support our learners.

Manager of Equity and Student Life, Christina Alcena (she/her)

Manager of Equity and Student Life, Christina Alcena’s (she/her) passion and personal mission is to create more visibility for underrepresented individuals within the field of education, specifically in higher education and student life, through ongoing mentorship and guidance.

“It’s really important that we practice sustainability in all facets of our approach of work, in school and in our lives, because we can all contribute to either harming or sustaining our local and global communities,” says Christina. “We need to create healthy communities for future and current members of our communities.”

Christina accomplished a master’s degree focused on curriculum, teaching and learning with a focus on arts in education, at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto. Christina adds, “obtaining a master’s degree has allowed me to develop a strong understanding of social equity work with the focus on creative interventions, such as arts-based community social programming that I love and has led me to want to work at a place like Humber that often embeds this within their programs.”

When asked what sustainability means to Christina, she explains, “As a Black person, I believe it’s really important to recognize the way in that sustainability work is directly tied to anti-racism work. There’s a pathway to enhance positive outcomes for communities of colour, by enhancing sustainability efforts.” Christina continues, "Once individuals and/or communities are able to see that link, there [can] be more impactful partnerships and accomplishments from both parties.”

“I often have the privilege of being in a position of power to champion this notion through delivering programming and exploring policy changes, or simply meeting with individuals to get a sense of their current needs, which I’m always happy to do,” says Christina.

Christina shares that she’s in process of learning and unlearning: “If students, faculty and staff have any suggestions or things that they think our areas can work towards, I’m more than willing to connect further.” If you’d like to connect with Christina, you’re encouraged to reach out through LinkedIn or email.

To learn more about Christina’s current position at Humber and the Equity and Student Life team’s equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) achievements in the last year, read the full article here.
