Nuit Blanche Toronto 2021: Fellowship at Humber College Lakeshore Campus

Nuit Blanche Toronto is a free and annual overnight event, produced by the City of Toronto. It presents opportunities for audiences to explore new neighborhoods and engage with contemporary art in public spaces. Humber Galleries and Humber College Lakeshore Campus is pleased to partner with Nuit Blanche Toronto on this popular event. This summer, we invite students to put their creative skills to use and collaborate on a Fellowship project with classmates from a wide range of disciplines. Led by Humber Bachelor of Music alumnus Mason Victoria, they will work together over 14 weeks, engaging in the ideation and production of a dynamic multi-disciplinary artistic project for this year's Nuit Blanche Toronto.

October 2, 2021 marks the 16th edition of Nuit Blanche Toronto and includes a major shift in the curatorial vision of the event. Its theme, The Space Between Us, has become even more pertinent during these many months of isolation amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic. Its content and audience participation will inevitably reflect new opportunities and obstacles for artists, encouraging everyone to rethink how we access art installations and collections, without undermining the true value of visitor experience. Whether intended to be exhibited in-person or online, physical distancing and the ability to display artwork in an online format should be kept at the forefront of mind when producing in-person projects.

Applications must be submitted by Sunday, March 14, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. EST via email to stefanie.galvanek@humber.ca.

To apply, please include:

  • Completed application form, including your contact information, CV, and two professional references
  • A digital portfolio showcasing your design, art, web, music or communications work
  • A 3-5 minute video outlining your educational background, experience and qualifications, as well as a description of the unique talents you would bring to the fellowship
  • A reference form, completed by your PC or one of your professors

For more information and to apply, please visit our website.

*Please note: All projects will have to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines present at the time of the installation, exhibition, and takedown of the artwork. Thank you for your understanding.

Humber business club makes a COVID-19 comeback

Humber College’s DECA chapter isn’t your average club. For Devan Shingadia, a third-year student in Humber’s Bachelor of Commerce – Digital Business Management program, the extra-curricular activity has been integral to creating connections and opportunities in real life that will have a lasting impact on his career.

When COVID-19 started to affect gatherings and activities at Humber, he began to worry that others would not get the chance to experience the program and its benefits.

On February 10, we sent out a quick poll question to get your feedback on the preferred length of future Town Halls. Here are the results from the more than 350 responses received.

Town Hall quick poll responses
1.5-hour Town Hall sessions are a good length 164
Town Hall sessions should be one-hour 191

Given the close vote, the next two Town Halls will be kept at 1.5 hours and there may be additional opportunities to provide feedback.

As we are coming close to wrapping up the current CCR Year (May 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021), the CCR team would like to provide a friendly reminder checklist to ensure smooth sailing into the new CCR year:

  • Ensure students who participated in your CCR experience have added it to their CCR Record. Here is a link to video instructions you can provide to students.
  • Ensure that you have reviewed all student CCR requests for your experience and have 0 pending requests before the April 30, 2021 deadline. Here are video instructions on how to manage CCR Requests.
  • If you have current CCR experiences which you no longer plan to run for the upcoming CCR year, please email us with the position title so we can remove it from the 2021 – 2022 time period.

We truly appreciate the work put in by our campus partners to deliver valuable Co-Curricular experiences for our Humber and Guelph-Humber students.

Thanks again and we look forward to the 2021 – 2022 CCR year!

What a year it's been

There is an anniversary coming up, and it’s one many of us would likely prefer not to be celebrating. It has been almost a year since we made the decision to temporarily close Humber campuses for the safety of all students, faculty and staff amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

On March 13, 2020, we announced that Humber would cease on-site classes for a week. At the time, we had no idea that the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic would persist one year later, and that most of our staff and students would still be learning and working remotely.

So many things have changed since then. Much of our connection with peers and colleagues has shifted online, as have most courses and student services. We were able to reopen and begin limited in-person education in the summer with health and safety protocols in place. It’s been a year of adapting and innovating.

#HumberTogether Series: A one-year lookback at notable moments at Humber during the COVID-19 pandemic

March 13, 2021 marks one year since the COVID-19 pandemic led to Humber campus closures and brought tidal waves of change for staff, faculty, students and the wider Humber College community.

In March of 2020, the college announced it would cease on-site classes for a week. Nobody knew what the future would bring, but the community united to move forward.

Throughout the first two weeks of March, Humber Today will publish stories showcasing some of the exceptional efforts of various departments, clubs and individuals over the last 365 days as part of a #HumberTogether Series.

Two images stacked on top of one another with the text "Call for Submissions" overlaying. Top image features four red brick cottages; bottom image features the rocky shoreline of Lake Ontario.

We have a new project in the works and need your help recruiting student writers, poets, and musicians (paid opportunity).

The Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre is currently accepting submissions for a new online video series tentatively titled "Grounds for Leisure," led by Humber Lakeshore student Naomi Stokes (Arts Administration and Cultural Management). We welcome students from any program at Humber to submit their work for consideration.

We are seeking original written and audio content focused on exploring the calming forces within our natural environment - remotely. The project will blend creative writing, poetry, stories, and/or instrumental music recordings of Humber students with video recordings of the natural environment of the Lakeshore Grounds, with an emphasis on areas within Colonel Samuel Smith Park. The video series will create an opportunity to make the natural environment of the campus accessible to the student community as well as those who are unable to access the space.

The full call for submissions is attached and can also be found online at https://www.lakeshoregrounds.ca/grounds-for-leisure.

Deadline to apply is March 5, 2021 at midnight.

Videos will premiere on YouTube in late spring 2021.
