At the start of each term, there is an influx of international students inquiring about proper registration protocols. The International Centre has a dynamic student service to assist inquiring international students through Q&A webchats hosted by the International Customer Service Advisor team (ICSA).

There, students can join a live session on Microsoft Teams every weekday from Monday through Friday in a 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. time slot. The two time slots provide the students who reside in different time zones the opportunity to pick which session works best for them.

This platform gives students the opportunity to get answers to questions like how to find academic support, how to register for courses, why they have study permit holds, or whether their program is registration block-based or course-based.

Live Q&A Webchat Schedule

If students are unable to attend a live session they can always send an inquiry through the contact form. Please feel free to share this information with your Faculty and/or department.

The Guardian app is available for free in Apple or Google Play stores. The self-assessment must be completed each day prior to you coming to campus. For example, if you are planning to be on campus on Monday and Tuesday in the same week, you must complete the assessment on both days.

In the app, you can access the self-assessment by clicking on COVID-19 Updates and then COVID-19 Self-Assessment.

In order to prevent a slow down at entry ways, you are asked to complete the assessment prior to attending campus and have your approval screen ready to show to designated staff who will be reviewing the approvals at campus entrances.

Humber and the Department of Public Safety reserve the right to ask any student, staff and faculty for proof of daily completion of the COVID-19 Self-Assessment.

If you do not have a smart phone or are unable to download or update the Humber Guardian app, view an alternate format of the questions. Contact the Department of Public Safety at 416.675.8500 or publicsafety@humber.ca if you have any questions.

Please visit our Return to Campus website and www.humber.ca/updates for more information.

Note: Those who already have the app, will need to update the app to have the latest information. From the Guardian’s home screen, users can click on About/Preferences > Data Update > Check for Updates.

After more than 34 years at Humber College, Janice Dobson-Guzik has decided to retire June 30, 2022.

Janice graduated from Humber College in 1987 from the Faculty of Business, Legal Secretary Program, and upon graduation, began her career at Humber as a Legal Secretary to Humber’s first Legal Counsel; the first full-time and onsite General Counsel in an Ontario community college.

In addition to serving as the Assistant to Humber’s Legal Counsel, Janice has served in a variety of different roles including:

  • Assistant to the Director, Ancillary Services
  • Assistant to the Registrar
  • Assistant to the Dean of Student Services
  • Program and administrative support in the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology

Janice currently plays a pivotal role in providing program and wrap-around support to over 1,000 high school students per year as the Dual Credit Program Support Officer. Dual credit students are learners who are college capable but often face multiple barriers to access and inclusion. Taking a dual credit course at Humber means that these learners can earn both a college course credit and a credit towards their secondary school diploma. By grounding her service to students in care, compassion and by fostering a deep sense of belonging, Janice works alongside nine school boards, and faculties across Humber, to create meaningful academic and engagement opportunities for dual credit students with the ultimate goal of fostering student success.

Please join me in extending our sincerest gratitude, to Janice, for her unwavering and steadfast commitment to our students, and the Humber community, over the last 34 years and for wishing her all the best as she embarks on this next phase of her journey!

Sharing Knowledge

Humber College is committed to fostering a respectful and inclusive culture in which all members of the college community study, work and live free from discrimination and harassment. To this end, it is imperative that we understand the definition of key equity terms that will enrich our capacity to prevent all forms of harassment and discrimination. The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion will be providing definitions of key terms pertinent to our work in building a more inclusive college.

Thursday, March 31 marks the Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV), a time to celebrate and amplify trans representation.

Trans is an umbrella term to describe people whose gender is not the same as, or does not sit comfortably with, the sex they were assigned at birth. Trans people may describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms, including (but not limited to) transgender, non-binary, or genderqueer. It is important to remember that trans identities are diverse. Trans people may identify in many different ways (Stonewall.org, 2019).

TDOV is a day to show your support for the trans community. It aims to bring attention to the accomplishments of trans people around the globe bringing awareness to transgender identities, achievements, and community.

Rachel Crandall, an American transgender activist, launched the day in 2009 as a response to transgender people's poor recognition and acceptance. At the time, the only well-known trans-centered day was the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which commemorated transgender persons who had been murdered but did not honour or celebrate surviving transgender people. Transgender Day of Visibility was established as a day to honour and celebrate transgender people in a positive light (Transgender Day of Visibility, 2022).

Ways to celebrate TDOV include:

  1. Educate yourself and share that knowledge across your networks. A good place to start is Humber Library’s 2SLGBTQ+ Education Guide. Toronto Public Library also has a helpful resource.
  2. Check your networks and see if you are following trans creators, educators, and artists. Amplify those voices today and beyond.
