Reactivation Project Logo

Humber Galleries is looking to explore how different disciplines can inspire creation in one another while working completely separate. Bringing together a group of multi-disciplinary Humber students to help us we’ve created a new project entitled REACTIVATION.

REACTIVATION begins with reactivating our Permanent Art Collection by activating student collaboration. Taking a handful of collection artworks, we have tasked a small group of student creatives to create musical works in direct reaction to these artworks; focusing in on their initial reaction and creating work based directly on that inspiration. From there, these musical pieces will be given to a second group of students to react in the same way, only this time in the form of movement or dance pieces. This process then repeats for other groups of student creatives that will create works in both the Physical and Digital artwork fields.

Open to all Humber students, this project will take place from February 28 to April 11 with the final online exhibition going live April 19.

Applications are open now at: http://humbergalleries.ca/reactivation

Space is limited and participants will be selected by a panel of Humber staff. All creatives chosen will be given a $200 honourarium for their participation.

For more info please visit humbergalleries.ca/reactivation or contact casey.norris@humber.ca.

To ensure that all requests are processed efficiently and without unnecessary delay, our department kindly asks all requestors to review the RTI guideline and procedure provided below:

Prior to submitting all RTI’s to AR, please ensure the following information is provided and accurately reviewed:

  • Vendor name
  • Vendor contact – this includes e-mail, telephone number, address. Our department requires this information for collection purposes in the case of any unpaid and/or overdue invoices
  • Billing amount
    • If not tax applicable, please specify under the special instructions that there is no tax
    • If tax applicable, please either specify that tax is to be remitted at month-end, or separate the HST amount from the pre-tax amount
  • If the vendor requires their PO# to be on the invoice for remittance, please ensure that PO# is provided on the RTI so that it will be included on the bill

In the case where an invoice needs to be revised or cancelled, please note that it will require AR to manually cancel the processed invoice and re-issue a new one. Therefore, any request to modify or cancel the invoice will be placed in the same queue as other regular RTI’s.

Should you have any other questions or concerns pertaining to this process, please do not hesitate to reach out to our department at accounts.receivable@humber.ca.

A capstone project is being undertaken to understand the current processes, and tools that are accessible to support knowledge and resource sharing for faculty, departments, and other stakeholders of LGBTQ+ education. This project is a partnership between The LGBTQ+ Resource Centre and The Bachelor of Community Development Program at Humber College. The study has approval from Humber’s Research Ethics Board.

We are asking faculty to share their experience in accessing LGBTQ+ resources through this online survey. The scope of the survey will include questions on but not limited to: available resources, the current process in place to access information or resources, and awareness and practice of LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Faculty will be able to participate anonymously and can opt out at any time. Individual responses will be kept confidential with results being reported as an aggregate. Folks who complete the full survey and choose to provide their email address will be entered in a draw for a $100 gift card and will support Flamingo Market a Toronto founded shop supporting LGBTQ+ artists and entrepreneurs across Canada.

Your feedback is important and we hope you will consider participating. It will take approximately 30 minutes. Please click this link to access the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/lgbtqhumber

For any questions, please reach out to Luc Blanchard (Principal Investigator), or Matthew Travill (Student Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives Coordinator- LGBTQ+ Resource Centres).

In our ongoing Orangeville Campus reflection series, this month’s spotlight is on our Early Childhood Education (ECE) program.

The ECE program was launched at the Orangeville campus in 2008. Since our first graduating class in 2010, many program graduates have gone on to further education and/or careers in their chosen field. The following are reflections that have been shared by some of those graduates and by members of the Orangeville team who supported them on their Humber journey:

Esther Marculewicz – ECE Graduate - RECE
My time at the Humber Orangeville campus in the Early Childhood Education program was extremely valuable. It was an optimal environment for learning because the class sizes were small which made it easy to interact with fellow students and professors. One of the most important things I learned was the value of relationships. Through building strong relationships with my professors and fellow students, I was able to explore the material at a deeper level and build confidence, self-esteem and social interaction skills. Now on the job as an Early Childhood Educator, I can build on this experience by forming close connections with the children. I observe the children’s interests and follow their lead which increases their engagement. The value of the ECE program at Humber Orangeville will live on in the hearts and lives of many educators and children.

Linda Baker – ECE Graduate - RECE
It is with a very heavy heart to hear that our amazing Humber College in Orangeville is closing their doors for good in June 2021. My experience at the college was truly the best. Humber went above and beyond to help all their students. I believe I succeeded because it was a small College and very personable. The staff did everything possible for your success. Believe me when I say, "they have your back". Being out of school for 40 years was very challenging for me. I graduated with honors in 2017 and if it wasn't for the unbelievable support there, I feel I wouldn't have completed my ECE course. I am very honored and proud to have been a part of this amazing College!!!

Joanne Osmond RECE - Placement Officer, ECE
I joined the Orangeville Campus as a Field Advisor for the Early Childhood Education Program in 2011. It was the start of nine wonderful years that would allow me the opportunity to guide and support students completing their Field Practicums at various Orangeville Child Care Centres and Elementary Schools, work with our Community Partners and strengthen our collaborations with them and teach many of the courses offered within the ECE program. I had the pleasure of interacting and spending time with so many inspiring fellow educators as well as fantastic students who were committed to and excited by the field of Early Childhood Education. I felt incredibly lucky and very grateful to work in the community that I live in and have so much love for. As I continue my work at the North campus, I will always look back fondly at my time at the Orangeville campus. I am so proud of everything that was built and accomplished by so many dedicated members of the Humber Orangeville team!

Deborah Sargeant – Faculty, ECE
Being a part of the Orangeville campus meant being connected, seen, and heard.  While working in Orangeville, I had the opportunity to connect and share with faculty from other programs that I would not have otherwise crossed paths with. I also found that I got to know the students much better through the smaller class sizes, robust discussions, and events on campus. There was an open-door policy for students and staff. Joe welcomed everyone with a smile, and Morag always seemed to have the answers to my questions. I had a positive experience at the Orangeville campus, and I will miss the team spirit.

Jennifer Smith – ECE Graduate - RECE
The Orangeville Campus was a great experience for me. As a mother of two and aspiring to become an ECE during that time in my life was very hard to achieve. Having a campus in my town, I was able to attend full time, while also being a full-time mom, and working part-time. Being in smaller classes gave us more one-on-one opportunities with our educators and was a reason for us all to become successful. I am now currently an RECE in a preschool classroom at a Centre where I had my first placement, and this is because of my amazing experience at Humber Orangeville with the fantastic support of the educators.

Joanne Tuck – Program Coordinator, ECE
There is a sense of community among the Orangeville ECE students that is hard to replicate. They work collaboratively and support one another in a caring and respectful way. Over time they have contributed to the Early Childhood community in ways that they can be proud of as professionals and as contributing members of a regulated profession.

We are so pleased and thankful for our students and staff who have had an inspiring time at Humber. Look out for next month’s Orangeville Campus reflection.

"Black Heritage Month” reflects emerging terminology that aims to recognize the history of the Black community, along with its present achievements and future.

In 1995, Canada officially recognized Black History Month following a motion introduced by the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine. For many Canadians, recognizing Black History Month provided a doorway into the culture and experience of Black/African people. Many Black Canadians have also shared that Black History Month has a disproportionate focus on the past and narratives of slavery and colonialism. There have been calls for a shift that recognizes the past, but also celebrates the present and imagines a radical, bold and bright future for Black Canadians.

In partnership with BASE and equity seeking groups across Humber College, the Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity is advocating a shift, from “Black History Month” towards “Black Heritage 365 Days of the Year”. Black Heritage 365 Days of the Year recognizes the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians. At the same time, the Centre aims to provide programming throughout the year to build resiliency, practices and communities of care, and skill development for Black/African staff and students. Additionally, our all year programming of Black Heritage aims to build EDI capacity, anti-Black racism and awareness.
