Usage in Blackboard continues to grow as more and more faculty are leveraging the LMS/Blackboard platform. The growth in Blackboard usage has spiked an increase in data storage and in response, Humber College will be initiating their annual Blackboard Data Retention Initiative. This initiative is sponsored and supported by ITS, AOC and the Teaching & Learning support services.

Who will be impacted?

  • All faculty and administrators who have courses in Blackboard, pre-Fall 2018, will be impacted.

Which Blackboard courses will be archived and deleted?

  • All Banner generated courses, courses that have an assigned CRN number, including XL/cross listed courses, from Fall 2017 to Summer 2018 inclusive will be archived and then fully deleted from Blackboard.
  • .DEV, _DEV, SBX, TUTR, Master/MSTR and other specially requested Blackboard courses will not be archived nor deleted. Faculty can contact naveed.aqeel@humber.ca if they have questions regarding which courses will be impacted.
  • Faculty will continue to have access to their courses tied to the following academic years – 2018/2019, 2019/2020.

When will courses be archived and deleted?

  • The archiving process will commence immediately. There will be no impact to Blackboard courses or Blackboard services during the archiving process.
  • The deletion of Blackboard course data (Fall 2017 – Summer 2018 courses) will begin the weekend of January 30/31, 2021.
  • The process of archiving and deleting data from Blackboard will be carried out annually as per the retention policy and after the close out of each academic year.

Faculty considerations and responsibilities:

  • Faculty should export/archive any courses older than Fall 2018 that they wish to keep offline. This task should be ideally completed by January 29, 2021.
  • Help documentation on how to export/archive a course can be found here.
  • Exported/archived courses should be saved either offline on a USB or uploaded to a cloud storage solution such as Microsoft OneDrive.
  • Faculty one-on-one support is available through the Instructional Support Studios.
  • Additional communication reminders (Communiqué announcements, social media posts, websites) reminding faculty of this initiative will be ongoing up until/including the January 30/31 deletion weekend.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Blackboard Data Retention Initiative, please contact mark.ihnat@humber.ca or ryan.burton@humber.ca. Thank you.

The team at T+L Creative has been working hard to roll out new and exciting video tools for Humber faculty. We’re pleased to announce that Powtoon is now available for faculty to use on a first-come, first-served basis.

PowToon is a simple, powerful tool which can be used to create short, character-driven animations with a few clicks of your mouse. But that's not all. This versatile software can animate your already-existing PowerPoints, and assist you in adding voiceover and music. It can also record your screen, which can be quickly added to your Powtoon video. PowToon truly is the Swiss Army knife in the video toolkit.

For more information about Powtoon, or to request access, visit our new Powtoon page on the T+L Creative microsite.

The Communiqué webpage (www.humber.ca/staff) and daily newsletter was refreshed in September 2019. Those changes included a new look and the addition of analytic functionality that provides information on engagement like open rates, click-through rates etc. We have been using this information to help strengthen our communications about what is happening across our physical and digital campuses.

As a result, we have implemented a few initial changes following insights about employee engagement so far. In general, our updated approach will be:

  • Event posts will be limited to those promoting events that are no more than one month away.
  • The number of times an announcement or event post can be repeated will be limited to three.

To help us continue to improve the daily Communiqué newsletter, we are asking for your input. Please complete this short survey to anonymously share your experiences with Communiqué with us. The survey will close at the end of day on Friday, February 5.

Permissions have been updated to allow all members of the Humber and Guelph-Humber community to access the survey. If you previously could not access it, please try again.

If you have additional feedback on Communiqué, we would love to hear from you. Please connect with Emily Milic, Humber’s PR and Communications Manager.

Attention faculty members!

If you’ve integrated equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), Indigenous knowledge, sustainability and/or systems thinking into your course outcomes, assignments and/or course content, the Office of Sustainability wants to hear from you.

The Office of Sustainability is in the process of developing a Sustainability Repository of EDI, Indigenous knowledge, sustainability and systems thinking-related case studies for all faculty to reference during their course development.

The information collected from this questionnaire will be used to create a database (on Humber.ca/Sustainability) for faculty as a point of reference for examples of how EDI, Indigenous knowledge, sustainability and systems thinking can be integrated into academic learning outcomes, assignments and other course-related content.

The deadline to complete this questionnaire is Friday, February 19, 2021. If you have any questions, please contact sustainability@humber.ca

Clarisse Estebar standing in campus hallway

This month’s Sustainability Spotlight is on Clarisse Estebar.

From a young age, Clarisse Estebar has always felt strongly about environmental and social issues and spent her time volunteering to help her community. Clarisse explains that in high school she surpassed her 40 volunteer-hour requirements with over 1,500 hours completed. “You can submit it all, but the computer stops inputting the data,” Clarisse added with a chuckle.

Currently, Clarisse is the Finance and Program Officer at the International Development Institute, part of Humber’s International Centre. In her role, Clarisse supports and manages the customized training portfolio, which includes writing proposals and creating relationships with potential partners for international development programs and experiential learning opportunities for students. Clarisse is also in charge of community engagement and events between the local community and Humber.

Sustainability has always been important to Clarisse, as she explains, “it's something that you become aware of depending on the environment that you grew up in. But I think it's important to me because being aware of what's at stake makes it real.” She believes a lot of people in North America don’t understand the impact of climate change because they don’t see the impacts on their front door. “I think recently with all the wildfires, [climate change] has become more apparent and real to people,” said Clarisse.

As a child growing up in the Philippines, Clarisse experienced climate refugees and poverty firsthand, “I've always been conscious that everything we do impacts [others] elsewhere. If people don’t see the impact firsthand, it’s hard for them to make the connection,” she said. Clarisse credits that sustainability is important in everything she does. “Frankly,” she said, “I just want to live beyond tomorrow.”

Inverted image of the Cottages of the Former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital. With text on the bottom and top that reads Call for Submissions.

The Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre is seeking artwork for a digital show tentatively titled The Aesthetics of Mental Health, curated by Arts Administration and Cultural Management student Samuel McGuire. Artists working in all mediums that can be represented digitally are welcome to submit. The Interpretive Centre and the Curator are seeking artists at all stages of their careers.

The exhibit will showcase artistic interpretations of the evolving standards of mental health care facilities as they relate to the patient experience, drawing inspiration from the recent past of institutionalized mental health care to the evolving future of therapeutic design. The work selected for the show will have a focus on how the design of living spaces and recreational spaces can affect one’s mental well-being. The organizers of the show are looking for artistic interpretations of these design aesthetics.

Deadline to apply is January 29, 2021 at midnight.

The show will premier in late spring 2021.
