I am writing today to share some exciting news for our Faculty and particularly for skilled trades education and training at Humber.

We are moving forward with a $9.5 million expansion of the Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology (110 Carrier Drive) to help address the increasing demand for apprenticeship and trades training.

For the next three years, Humber will receive more than $1 million in funding from Ontario's Apprenticeship Capital Grant (ACG) to support the project. The college will be contributing approximately $2.16 million/year from its capital priorities fund.

The planned 16,620-square-foot addition to the Centre will allow us to:

  • increase the number of skilled trades training opportunities for pre-apprentices, apprentices and postsecondary learners
  • add additional trades to our portfolio in the construction, industrial and service sectors
  • add to and improve existing facilities located at 110 Carrier Dr., improving efficiency in space utilization and training effectiveness
  • give students more choices when it comes to their learning style
  • explore and implement alternative methods of course delivery: e.g.: balanced online/on campus, use of VR and AR
  • create multi-purpose labs/classrooms facilitating better delivery of hands-on and theoretical learning
  • improve access to in-class training, including removing accessibility barriers and addressing gender equity

Construction is scheduled to begin in Fall 2021, under the direction of Michael Auchincloss and Philip Stubbs. Joe Chimenti will be the project lead from Capital Development and Facilities Management. There may be opportunities for involvement as the project moves forward and I will communicate with you directly when those opportunities come up.

Congratulations to all involved.

As the college enters into its fourth year of its five-year strategic plan, Humber wants to hear from you about what we have learned over this last year of unprecedented change and discuss what we can do to continue to be successful in achieving our strategic goals. Your input will also feed into the refresh of our academic and digital campus plans scheduled to take place in the fall.

While our strategic plan goals remain current, we know there are some that we want to pay particular attention to in the last two years. These five priorities emanate from our 2018-2023 Strategic Plan and include: The New Polytechnic Approach, Flexible Learning, Healthy & Inclusive Community, Remote & Hybrid Work Culture and Digital Campus. Further details on these priorities can be found in the document: Humber Tomorrow.

Outlined below are the various ways that employees can share their voices in the Humber Tomorrow process.

In addition to the May 5th virtual all-employee consultation, two additional sessions are being held:

Please register early and for one session only as registration is limited. If the three sessions reach capacity, an additional session will be held.

On May 20 from 12 to 1:30 p.m., we will be holding an all-faculty consultation. Attendance will also be limited to better enable opportunities for participation.

Employees can also complete the online feedback form or can hold their own consultation session with their colleagues by using the Humber Tomorrow consultation toolkit. Both of these feedback mechanisms are located on the WeAreHumber website.

Summaries of our various consultation sessions will appear on the Planning & Consultation Documents section of the WeAreHumber website as they become available.

If you have any questions about the process, please contact strategicplanning@humber.ca.

As a program coordinator, creative scientist and founder of Canadian Engineered Innovations, Lars Kristjansen wears many hats. We took a digital tour of his home lab where he films his lessons for students and heard about his journey with the Humber College community. We are in awe of his highly energetic approach to his role as an educator and a researcher.

The Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning (Humber College) has identified as its Strategic Priority #7 under Pillar #3, Healthy and Inclusive Community, to continue to build a diverse and inclusive community of exceptional students, faculty and staff. The specific supporting action is to establish and implement an institutional framework and strategy for equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) that addresses the needs of both students and employees.

An EDI Taskforce comprising of students, faculty, support and administration staff, alumni, community and industry partners was created to lead this initiative. This Institutional EDI Framework and Strategy will address the following four (4) program areas:

  1. Access & Equity: Students and Employees
  2. Curriculum and Programs
  3. Campus Culture
  4. College-wide Communication and Engagement Strategy

We appreciate your ongoing feedback and support as we work to finalize Humber's Institutional EDI Framework & Strategy. We invite members of the Humber community to review the most updated version of the objectives (as of May 4, 2021) for all program areas.

Every year on May 12, mathematical communities around the world celebrate Women in Mathematics Day – an opportunity to host events that highlight the phenomenal achievements of women in mathematics and inspire young women everywhere.

Although we can’t host an event on campus this year, you can still take part virtually. Thanks to the May12 Initiative that brings together virtual events locally and internationally, there is a special opportunity for a free individual screening of the award-nominated 2020 documentary titled Picture a Scientist. The documentary tells the story of three women scientists who lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, facing harassment, institutional discrimination, and years of subtle slights.

To learn more about the May12 Initiative and to sign up for the free movie screening go to https://may12.womeninmaths.org. The film will be available to watch between May 12 and 14, 2021. To receive your link by email, please register before May 6.

Film synopsis:

Picture a Scientist is a feature-length documentary film chronicling the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. A biologist, a chemist and a geologist lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, overcoming brutal harassment, institutional discrimination, and years of subtle slights to revolutionize the culture of science. From cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we also encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

The Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities has removed the provincial requirement that international and domestic students who have travelled from outside of Canada be tested for COVID-19 at the end of their quarantine period.

Following this news, as of May 5, 2021, Humber College will no longer be providing COVID-19 testing for international and domestic students who have traveled from outside of Canada. Any students currently in quarantine and any future students will not be required to be tested upon completion of their quarantine period.

This change is a result of the COVID-19 testing program implemented by the federal government pre-departure, post-arrival and at Day 8 of quarantine. Students will continue to be subject to all applicable federal requirements.

International students who have questions about this change may use this contact form.
Domestic students may send any related questions to enquiry@humber.ca.
