The Humber community may have noticed that construction work on the exterior of the North Campus Building NX Passive House retrofit project stopped in early May. Unfortunately, members of the Sheet Metal Works and Roofers Local 30 have been on strike since, and it has severely impacted the schedule of completing the exterior work on this building. Fortunately, the building is water tight at this point, and only asthetics related to the siding and the new canopy remain to be completed, but our schedule of end of June completion has been pushed back. It's completely out of Humber's control, but we remain hopefull the two sides will negotiate an agreement and get back to work soon. We will post an update once we receive confirmation from our general contractor.

Work continues inside by different contractors to finish the mechanical system conversion, and to ready the building for the final Passive House test on the August long weekend.

As the first net zero carbon retrofit building in Canada, and hopefully the first Passive House certified retrofit, we are receiving lots of interest from across North America from other organizations looking for ways to reduce carbon emissions to meet provincial, federal and Paris Accord targets. We believe this project is an example of Humber delivering "national leadership in sustainable campuses" as prescribed in the Strategic Plan.

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity invites all full-time, part-time, contract and sessional employees to complete the Employment Equity Questionnaire (EEQ). The information that you provide in the Employment Equity Questionnaire will be kept confidential and will only be reported in aggregate form for Employment Equity purposes. In other words, the reported data will not contain any personal identification. Having up-to-date knowledge of our workforce representation will allow the College to identify where underrepresentation exists, and to target its efforts toward removing barriers that may exist in the College’s employment systems.

Please note - the completion of Humber’s Employment Equity Questionnaire is voluntary.

Please note there will be an external film shoot taking place at North Campus on Tuesday, June 25, 2019.

On June 25, there will be a small crew prepping their filming area at the exterior of the main entrance of the Humber Learning Resource Commons (LRC) from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Filming will take place from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the following area:

  • Exterior of the main entrance of the Humber Learning Resource Commons (LRC)

Please note that half of Lot 7 (approx. 40 spaces) will be unavailable between 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25.

Public Safety Security has been arranged to be with this film crew at all times while they are on Humber property and will be redirecting students, staff and guests to alternative entrances/exits while filming is taking place.

Update (June 20): Senior Dean Farzad Rayegani has surpassed his fundraising goal of $5,000! Farzad is so grateful for the incredible support: “I thought I would be walking the Camino alone, but I have received so much encouragement, support and positivity already. Just like you will be cheering me on as I walk up the Pyrenees on my first day, you will also be there for our students and supporting the exciting journey they have ahead of them!” Farzad believes that together, we can reach a new goal of $6,000 for student scholarships. Please show your support and give now.

Update (June 14): Senior Dean Farzad Rayegani set out to raise $2,500 for Humber FAST student scholarships and has reached his goal in just two days! Thank you to his generous supporters. He’s increasing his goal to $5,000 to help even more Humber FAST students to make their academic dreams a reality. Please show your support and give now.

In July, Farzad Rayegani, Senior Dean of Humber’s Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology, will be hiking the Camino de Santiago, an 800 km hiking trail in northwestern Spain. Thousands of people walk the Camino de Santiago each year. The vast majority of pilgrims are on their own quests, whether they be physical, recreational or spiritual.

On his journey, Farzad will draw upon the same mental and physical resilience that Humber students display in pursuit of their academic goals. As part of his trip, he is aiming to raise $2,500 to support student scholarships in the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology.

70% of Humber students who withdraw from their studies at Humber do so because of financial constraints. Scholarships ensure that all deserving Humber students can complete their studies, regardless of their financial situation. A gift in the form of a scholarship not only provides Humber students with valuable support, but also gives them the encouragement to go further than they ever thought possible.

In Farzad’s own words:

“For me, this month-long hike will be an amazing challenge, but an achievable one too. I have packed, repacked, planned and prepared, and soon I will have 30 days to follow my thoughts wherever they want to go. I will soak in the history, explore large cities and meander through fields, small towns and villages. My time will be my own and all I need to do is keep a simple rhythm of daily needs: eat, walk, sleep – putting one foot in front of the other to meet the often grueling demands of the Camino.

As Rumi said, ‘It’s your road and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.’

Each one of you will be with me in spirit as I make this journey, and I hope you will support our Humber students as they embark on their demanding academic journeys as well. Buen Camino!”

Don’t know what the HRMS is?

The Human Resource Management System (HRMS), is a new Human Capital Management fully integrated, cloud based system that will replace Humber's existing legacy system. The new HRMS will serve as a central source of information for all HR related processes and programs, making it accessible to staff, faculty and other stakeholders through their computer, on or off campus.

Once deployed, the new HRMS provides access to core HR functions, based on your profile as a manager or an employee. Some functionality includes:

  • Entering and tracking attendance
  • Benefits enrollment
  • Entering and approving time
  • Talent management (Which includes Recruitment)
  • And much more!

This would allow HR to:

  • Become Better business partners to faculties and departments
  • Deliver real-time data & information that will improve decision-making
  • Have enhanced reporting capability
  • Streamline processes to enable faster transactions

For managers and employees, the direct access functionality will become the new way of interacting with HR giving you the flexibility, autonomy and a sense of ownership for a better overall manager and employee experience.     

As we get ready to Go-Live, all impacted stakeholders will be receiving training information to ensure that the transition to the new HRMS is easy and seamless.

Updated Policy and Procedure: Temporary Use of Space for Events

The College’s updated Temporary Use of Space for Events Policy and Procedure will be effective July 2, 2019. The new policy and procedure will be posted here.

The manner in which space is booked for on-campus events, for both internal and external clients, will become more streamlined along with the defined approval process. All events and activities using space on campus will require a permit which will be issued by the booking authority, subject to inspection by the department of Public Safety or other college officials upon demand. This will ensure that all bookings have been vetted, meet risk management guidelines and are logged properly so that in the event of an emergency we can take appropriate action.

Some examples of the types of events/activities that are impacted by the new policy/procedure are (but are not limited to):

  • Vendor sales in the concourse i.e. Valentine’s Day gifts, graduation rings, flowers etc.
  • Student/Department led bake/craft sales and/or project displays
  • Art shows
  • Conference activities
  • Information tabling
  • Performances
  • Any use of space outside of regular business hours
  • Etc.

All external requests for booking space on campus will be managed by Humber’s Conference Services Department and should be referred to an Event Logistics Liaison at hcs@humber.ca or 416.675.5027. Internal requests for booking space will continue to be verified and processed through the Registration Office Scheduling Department via a new Temporary Use of Space Application form. If a request is deemed to be external, it will be forwarded to the Conference Services office.

During July, a series of training sessions will be provided on the revised policy and procedure for those who regularly book space for their departments or faculties.  Those dates will be published in an upcoming communique message once finalized.
