Humber’s Employment Equity Program - Implementation Steps

Humber College is committed to principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The Employment Equity Act was passed in 1986. Recognizing that "systemic discrimination" was responsible for most of the inequality found in employment, the Abella Royal Commission on Equality in Employment outlined a systemic response and chose the term "Employment Equity" to describe the process.

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity is re-establishing the Employment Equity Program at Humber.

Humber voluntarily complies with the Employment Equity Act.

The Implementation of an Employment Equity Program includes the following steps:

  • Step 1: Initiate an employment equity program
  • Step 2-1: Conduct a workforce analysis
  • Step 2-2: Conduct an employment systems review
  • Step 3: Create an employment equity plan
  • Step 4: Establish and sustain an employment equity program
  • Step 5: Produce an annual report

An Employment Equity Program was initiated at Humber several years ago. An ongoing process of the Employment Equity Program is to collect workforce information via Humber’s Employment Equity Questionnaire. The workforce information is used to conduct the workforce analysis (Step 2-1).

Please visit the Centre website for Frequently Asked Questions pertaining to Humber’s Employment Equity Program.

If you have questions pertaining to Humber's Employment Equity Program, please contact: Bharat Saini at 416.665.6622 x5160 or bharat.saini@humber.ca.

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity thanks you for helping to build a more inclusive Humber.

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)

In compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, (AODA) Humber College continues to promote a barrier-free learning, living and working environment. Under the AODA, Humber College is required to provide individualized workplace emergency response information to employees who have a disability.

How to Develop Individual Workplace Emergency Response Information

Managers should consult with employees who have disabilities, so that the individualized workplace emergency response information meets the employees’ needs. This is because the AODA requires Humber to be prepared for the specific needs that employees with disabilities may have in emergency situations, such as: fire; power outages; severe weather; natural disasters; security incidents and any other circumstance in which an employee may require assistance when evacuating the workplace in emergencies.

Humber is also required to review the individualized workplace emergency response information to make sure it remains effective and up-to-date.

How might Humber be made aware of the need to provide individualized workplace emergency response information?

  1. A new employee may have requested accommodations during the recruitment process.
  2. An existing employee tells their manager that they have a disability.
  3. An existing employee develops a temporary disability such as a broken leg.

Documenting Individualized Workplace Emergency Response Information

If an employee has an individual accommodation plan, then the individualized workplace emergency response information provided to the employee should be included in the plan.

Thank you for ensuring Humber’s compliance with the AODA.

For more information about the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act contact or the Workplace Emergency Response Information template, please contact: Jodie Glean, Manager, Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity at jodie.glean@humber.ca or 416.675.6622 x5685.

An Executive Steering Committee from Humber and the University of Guelph undertook an operational review of the University of Guelph-Humber, conducted by Deloitte Consulting, in the Fall 2017 and Winter 2018. This was the first review done in the 20-year joint venture partnership.

The review identified a three-stage approach to address and implement recommendations:

Stage 1 (Immediate): Tactical and Operational

  • Review and revise service agreements to reflect best practices
  • To promote quality academic delivery
  • Improving faculty allocation and equity
  • Sharing best practices on student services and supports, including which should be shared resources

Stage 2: Strategic Planning

  • Develop a strategic plan for U of GH

Stage 3 (Long Term): Structure

  • Upon completion of strategic plan/direction determine appropriate governance and legal structure to enable long term success

As an immediate next step, the committee is moving forward with the establishment of U of GH Joint Academic Advisory and Service Agreements Committees. The Academic Advisory Committee will be co-chaired by Gina Antonacci, Associate Vice-President Academic and Cate Dewey, Interim Associate Vice-President (Academic). The Service Review Committee will be co- chaired by Ray Darling, University Registrar and Jason Hunter, Vice-President, Student and Community Engagement.

The full review and a summary presentation are available here.
