Title reads: The Symbiotic Relationship Between the Classroom Experience, Work Integrated / Experiential Opportunities and Mentorship

Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is pleased to announce the publication of “The Symbiotic Relationship Between the Classroom Experience, Work Integrated / Experiential Opportunities and Mentorship” by Dr. Cory Ross, Dr. Rajeev Chib, and Isabelle Callahan-Nasser

Abstract:

The world of education, training and employment has changed drastically over the last decade. The need for post-secondary institutions to reach even deeper to their respective partners is imperative. Long gone are the days when students enrol in programming and are matched with a work-related opportunity. The need for these opportunities has grown, and the mosaic of sophistication for the placement is much more complex. A missing part of the matching process of the student and their work-integrated/experiential learning opportunity is the bringing together of a mentorship program embedded in this learning equation. A learning opportunity can last for only a term, while a mentorship relationship can last for life.

Read “The Symbiotic Relationship Between the Classroom Experience, Work-Integrated / Experiential Opportunities and Mentorship” on JIPE.ca.

TTC Conducting Emergency Exercise at the North Campus

TTC and Metrolinx, in cooperation with Humber Polytechnic, will be conducting an emergency exercise at the new Light Rail Transit (LRT) station located on the Humber North Campus.

The exercise will take place on Sunday, April 27, 2025 between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the northeast corner of the North Campus. The main exercise activity will take place between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. All exercise activities will take place either within the station, or on the LRT line just north of Humber Polytechnic in between the Humber and Westmore stations. The main campus is not part of the exercise area and impact to the campus will be minimal.

What You Can Expect To See

Set up for the exercise will start at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning. You may see emergency vehicles, along with TTC and other vehicles on or near campus, particularly at the plaza in the area of Finch and Westmore. The exercise includes approximately 200 participants, including TTC staff, emergency responders, as well as Humber Polytechnic students and staff who will be acting as passengers on the train. All exercise activities and site clean-up should be complete no later than 2 p.m.

The exercise will make use of Parking Lot 5 during the exercise. Therefore, Lot 5 will be unavailable for use during the exercise.

If you have any questions regarding the exercise, please contact Kathy Branton, Manager of Business Continuity and Emergency Management, via email at kathy.branton@humber.ca.

The Office of Sustainability is proud to share that Humber Polytechnic has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the 10th consecutive year. The designation is presented by MediaCorp Canada to companies who are leading in the creation of a culture of sustainability and the advancement of environmental initiatives.

Over the last decade, we have achieved distinctive milestones and continuously pushed boundaries. Some of the special highlights from the past year include:

  • Signing the Forward Food Pledge, which builds on our commitment to provide fresh and healthy food to the campus community.
  • Expansion of the Friendlier reusable container program into the Culinary Arts program’s culinary labs.
  • Receiving the Zero Carbon Building – Design Standard certification for the Humber Cultural Hub from the Canada Green Building Council.

Dive into this Humber Today story to learn more about the institution’s commitment to sustainability and how environmental projects help us build brilliance.

All of this is only possible thanks to the support of students, staff and faculty who collaborate on the integration of sustainability across all corners of the campus. To celebrate and recognize our community’s efforts, the Office of Sustainability is introducing the Faces of Sustainability campaign.

On a rolling basis, we will be highlighting someone from the Humber community who meaningfully integrates sustainability into their activities at Humber. You can find the stories on the Sustainability website and regularly on Humber’s Office of Sustainability social media and Communique posts. If you would like to join the movement, reach out to sandra.leutri@humber.ca and share how you’ve been championing sustainability at Humber Polytechnic.
