Occupational Health and Safety Services

Safety and Health week is an annual observance celebrated in Canada, the United States, and Mexico with the goal of focusing employers, employees, partners, and the public on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home, and in the community.

Humber College is committed to creating a safe and healthy working and learning environment for the entire Humber community. Every day next week, Occupational Health and Safety Services will be posting health and safety information in the Communiqué. Together, we can create safe workplaces and communities.

For this year’s Safety and Health Week, Occupational Health and Safety Services is excited to announce a chance to win some prizes via our Health and Safety Photo Contest! At the end of next week, we will invite all employees to submit a photo related to one of next week’s topics. The photos that are most applicable to the daily topics next week will be selected as the winners – so be sure to keep an eye on the Communiqué each day next week (photo idea tips will be provided throughout the week).

To find out more about Safety and Health Week, please visit https://www.safetyandhealthweek.ca or The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.

The In Transition: Bridging the Employability Gap for International Learners Through Integrated Solutions project is seeking the perspectives of international students and graduates in Ontario.

This research project aims to comprehensively explore the challenges that international students face as they transition into the Canadian workforce.

The project team appreciates your assistance in sharing this survey with international graduates from Humber and other public colleges in Ontario. Their perspectives are foundational for this research project as the project team works toward identifying the challenges and barriers that international graduates face when integrating into the Canadian labour market.

The project, funded by NSERC-CCSIF (College and Community Social Innovation Fund), is in partnership with the Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) and Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto (NEW).

Here are the highlights of faculty questions from April. These are not necessarily the most frequently asked questions, but helpful for all faculty members.

Question (linked assignment not visible to students): I have a link to an assignment and made it visible to students. Why can’t they see it?

An image of the question

Answer: The original assignment you linked to is not visible to students because it is inside a container that is hidden (either the folder or module has not been set to visible).

Question (HTML file and referenced files): I am trying to upload an HTML file and its referenced files in the Course Content on Blackboard, but it doesn't seem to work. Why might this be happening?

Answer: When you have multiple files associated with an HTML file, create a zip file that maintains the file structure, then upload it to the Course Content Collection (not the Tools Content Collection). Blackboard may not accurately display files from the Tools Content Collection, but files uploaded from the Course Content Collection will be shown correctly. (Step-by-step guide)

Question (Assessment due date): How can I accommodate students to provide different due dates in assessments?

Answer: For each assessment, you can set different due dates and submission limits for students. To do this, navigate to the Gradebook and select the assessment you want to adjust. Click on the ellipsis (...) next to the student for whom you want to change the due date, and modify the settings before saving. This gives the student a unique due date and submission limit. Repeat this procedure for any other students needing assessment accommodations. For more information, please visit our help guide.

Question (Test duration):I want to limit the test duration and enforce a deadline. The test must be completed by 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. While the test duration is 60 minutes, I don't want latecomers to start at 4:30 and finish at 5:30. Instead, I want all tests to be completed by 4:00 p.m. This means that latecomers will have a shorter time to complete the test. How can I achieve this in Blackboard Ultra?

Answer: You can achieve this in the Test settings. Set the due date and time, then select "Prohibit Late Submissions". This will automatically submit any ongoing tests at the due time.

Question (Gradebook): I was working on the Gradebook, and the next morning, I noticed that all the grades were gone! How can I get them back?

Answer: You can go to the Gradebook, and from the top right corner, click “Download Gradebook”. Select “Grade History” and check “Include deleted items”. This will give you the excel sheet showing the past history of entries in the Gradebook. You may have to manually record each grade that was deleted, but you will be able to recover grades.

Image of how to download

Please note that while grades can be retrieved, the submitted content cannot. If you need to access the content after grading, consider creating a backup.

For an assignment, navigate to the assignment from the Gradebook for which you want to download all submissions. Select the ellipsis “…” from the righthand side of the header, then click on "download all". Please see the following for more information: Step-by-step guide and Anthology Blackboard Help.

To back up students' responses to all test questions, go to the Gradebook, select Gradable Items, and click on the options next to the test you want to back up. Then select "Download Results". This will download all responses in a CSV file. (See Step-by-step guide)

Question (Respondus LockDown Browser): I used Respondus LockDown Browser for a test. I set the following two options: 1) to lock students until the exam was over, and 2) to view post-exam feedback and results. After the exam, the post-exam feedback reported “This exam session was terminated because a modified version of a blocked application was running on the computer”. What does this mean, and is there any detailed information I can pull from a log file somewhere?

Answer: There are no further information available from Respondus Lockdown Browser. However, this means that a program LockDown Browser blocks has been intentionally modified by the computer's user in an attempt to get around the security that the LockDown Browser provides. LockDown Browser has detected this hack, and then shut down. This modification cannot be done by accident and is not a technical issue. As such, we cannot further assist at Innovative Learning.

I'm thrilled to announce that after a very competitive selection process Elijah Williams has accepted the position of Dean of Indigenous Education & Engagement (IE&E) at Humber College. In this capacity, reporting directly to the Vice-President of Inclusion and Belonging, Elijah will play a pivotal role in leading strategic planning and providing culturally sensitive advisement to the Humber community. His focus will be on driving innovation in support services, funding initiatives and curriculum development tailored specifically to meet the needs of Indigenous learners.

Elijah's mandate extends beyond mere advocacy for Indigenous inclusion within our institution. He will spearhead the fulfillment of strategic Indigenous initiatives, aligning our efforts with the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Elijah's leadership will be instrumental in advancing Humber College's Indigenous education plan and commitment to truth and reconciliation.

Having served as the Associate Dean of Indigenous Education & Engagement since September 2022, Elijah has already demonstrated exceptional dedication and capability. His collaborative efforts with various departments have led to significant enhancements in Indigenous programming, methodology, research, and delivery. Elijah seamlessly transitioned into the role of acting dean earlier this year, showcasing his readiness and effectiveness in leadership. Prior to his tenure at Humber, Elijah's impactful work as the Director of Indigenous Engagement at Sheridan College highlights his extensive experience and commitment to Indigenous education.

Elijah's academic background, including a Master of Professional Education in Indigenous Educational Leadership from Western University, further underscores his dedication to advancing Indigenous education and engagement.

I wish to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the committee for their invaluable time, attention, and unwavering support. I am deeply grateful for their dedication.

Special recognition goes to the diligent members of the search committee:

  • Dawn Macaulay, Dean, Innovative Learning, Centre for Innovative Learning.
  • Derek Stockley, Associate Vice-President, Academic, Office of the Sr. VP, Academic.
  • Grace Francisci, Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Administrator, IE&E.
  • Jasman Singh, Talent Acquisition Advisor, Office of the VP, Human Resources and Organization Effectiveness.
  • Jason Hunter, Vice-President, Students and Institutional Planning, Office of the VP, Students and Institutional Planning.

Please join me in congratulating Elijah as he officially assumes the role on May 6, 2024. We eagerly anticipate the positive impact he will undoubtedly bring to advancing Indigenous education and engagement at Humber College. Wishing him every success in this new chapter.

Jason Seright
Vice-President, Inclusion and Belonging
