Did you know that there’s a new tool out in Blackboard Ultra for instructors and students? BeeBee ChatBot is easy to use and available now.

The Bb Chat Support, known as 'BeeBee', provides answers to commonly asked Blackboard Ultra questions and issues directly from Blackboard Help. Users may ask for support by clicking on the pre-populated list of topics, or by typing directly into the message box.

Please keep in mind that BeeBee is still learning. While it conveniently shares support articles based on the prompts it receives, there may be times when you don't quite get the answers you are looking for. Remember that it will get better over time as more users engage with it.

Humber Polytechnic aims to ensure a healthy working and learning environment for the community and recognizes the health hazards associated with smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. Humber became a smoke-free campus on January 1, 2019, with the introduction of the Smoke-Free Campus Policy.

As we begin a new semester, we would like to take some time to remind our community of this Policy. This Policy applies to all students, employees, contractors, the general public, and any other visitors on campus grounds. Smoking is prohibited on Humber property including all campuses, buildings, spaces, and grounds (including outdoor spaces), with a few special exemptions, which are described in the Policy. The use, sale, and promotion of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes, vapour products, tobacco products, cannabis products, and any other smoking products on Humber property is prohibited.

Signage indicating the prohibition of smoking of any kind on Humber property is found throughout all campuses, including in outdoor spaces. We encourage individuals to contact the Department of Public Safety at extension 8500 or by dialing 416.675.8500 should smoking of any kind be observed on Humber property. Those found in violation of the Policy may be subject to remedial action.

We thank all members of our community for their adherence to this Policy and assisting to make our campus smoke-free. Together, we can create a healthy working and learning environment for all.

For more information, please review the Smoke-Free Campus Policy.

As the days grow longer, we welcome the vibrant energy of spring and our students competing at Skills Ontario this month!

In the May FAST Times, we showcase associate dean Michael Auchincloss who extends an invitation to the entire Humber community to visit the Humber College booth at the Skills Ontario Career Exploration Showcase at the Toronto Congress Centre on May 6 and 7, where we will be inviting guests to bring it, plunge it, climb it, plant it, bake it and game it.

We have many more compelling stories that I look forward to you discovering on the following pages, including celebratory moments captured at the Scholarship Celebration where 23 FAST students were the recipient of 27 scholarships funded by our generous donors.

Warm regards,

Paul Griffin
Senior Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology

Here are the highlights of this month’s new and improved features in Blackboard Ultra. For more details, please follow the links below:

Supporting multiple performance criteria in release conditions

Release conditions allow instructors to control both who can access content items and when they can do so. This gives instructors the ability to manage content access and prearrange materials. Previously, a single performance criterion was available for release conditions. Now, instructors can add multiple performance criteria for more refined control. Students can access the content item only when all conditions are met.

Reuse questions in Forms

Reuse questions, an option within the Test creation workflow, will also be available in Forms when editing or creating a Form. When reuse question is selected, instructors can filter and select questions from existing Forms within the course. Selected questions are copied into the Form being created.

Add question feedback when grading a test by question

When grading, instructors can provide question-specific feedback so students can better understand the quality of their individual answers. After scores are posted, students can access both overall feedback and question-specific feedback in the Gradebook.

Improved Gradebook navigation

The grid and list view buttons have been replaced with text links to improve Gradebook navigation.

Weighted Calculation Improvements

The Gradebook's weighted calculation always distributed weight within the category proportionally. For instance, if a category held 10 per cent weight with three items totaling 25, 25, and 50, the percentages within this category were 2.5 per cent, 2.5 per cent, and 5.0 per cent respectively. Now, the weighted calculation allows items within the category to be distributed either proportionally or equally. This selection applies to all categories, giving instructors more flexibility.

There is an exciting opportunity for us to come together as a school and support academic integrity. Each fall, there is an International Day of Action (IDoA) for Academic Integrity. This year, IDoA takes place on October 16.

Check out the International Center for Academic Integrity's information on the IDoA webpage and see how one of Humber's students, Carmen Ward, won for most creative poster submission last year. Many schools from around the world participate in this important day and this is a chance for Humber to be part of something important, fun, and current.

This year, we want to host a session across Humber's campuses and locations on October 16.

If you are a faculty member who is interested in being part of this positive initiative, please contact Jennie Miron for more information at jennie.miron@humber.ca. The hope is to meet at least once this spring to brainstorm ideas for the day and then carry on early fall to get things finalized. Your enthusiasm and help is greatly appreciated!
