Dear Colleagues,

As you may have seen in Friday evening’s Communiqué, eight members of Humber Polytechnic’s Board of Governors tendered their resignations to the institution. I want to assure you that Humber’s operations and administrative functions remain steady and uninterrupted. Our current Board members, alongside Humber’s leadership team, are fully equipped to continue guiding the institution and advancing our strategic vision and mission. We remain committed to upholding principles of good governance while ensuring there are no disruptions to students or employees.

Recognizing the Board’s critical role in establishing Humber’s overall goals and strategic direction, we are actively working to fill the vacant roles in a timely manner. We look forward to welcoming new Board members who will support Humber’s bold, ambitious vision, and will share another update once the recruitment process has been completed. As promised, I will be hosting in person Town Halls at both Lakeshore and North Campus, and I anticipate sharing updates on the budget and day 10 data. We will be sharing invitations to the Town Halls in the coming days.

As we look to the future, we are reminded of the importance of adapting and leading in a rapidly changing world. With Building Brilliance, we have embraced a bold vision that challenges us to think big, to innovate, and to envision a brighter future, for everyone. This vision is fueled by the incredible work you do and our shared commitment to delivering unparalleled student experiences. You are the backbone of this institution and every day I am amazed by the exceptional skills, resilience, dedication, and heart you bring to everything you do.

Since the very first day I arrived at Humber, I have been in awe of our incredibly talented and inspiring team of faculty and staff as they move mountains to ensure every single student is successful in their post-secondary journeys. I firmly believe the future of our institution rests on Humber’s long-standing legacy as a leader in higher education, which has been shaped by the collective efforts of our community. Thanks to your hard work and leadership, we’ve empowered countless students from all over the world to realize their potential, and our impact extends far beyond the boundaries of our campuses.

I am deeply grateful to everything you do each and every day to ensure the success of our students and entire Humber community. I look forward to seeing you at the Town Halls.

Sincerely,

AMV

Dear Humber Community,

As part of our ongoing commitment to Indigenous learners, families, communities, and organizations, we are developing a new Indigenous Education Plan to guide Humber’s truth and reconciliation efforts. This plan will support the principles outlined in Colleges and Institutes Canada’s Indigenous Education Protocol, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Report and Calls to Action, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

At Humber, belonging is our bedrock. Indigenous Education & Engagement continues to focus on naawsidoong mino nawendiwin (building good relationships) with communities, both on and off campus. As such, our consultation process includes engaging Humber Indigenous Education Council members, Indigenous communities and organizations, Humber Committees, students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Truth and reconciliation is the responsibility of each of us. To ensure our new plan reflects the needs and aspirations of the Humber community, we are seeking your input through a short, anonymous online form. Your voice is crucial in informing the goals and priorities that will shape our new Indigenous Education Plan.

Please take a few moments to share your thoughts and help us create a future that supports and uplifts Indigenous students, staff and faculty, as well as cultivates and strengthens relationships across our campus community. You can access the form here: Share your voice

And if you interested in learning about what our Indigenous student services and educational programing have been, please check out our 2021-2023 Indigenous Education Plan: Naawsidoong Mino Nawendiwin: Building Good Relationships

Thank you for your time and participation.

Warmly,

Elijah Williams
Dean of Indigenous Education and Engagement

Fitness Assessments

Students in the Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management graduate program are leading fitness assessments in the winter 2025 semester. Discover your resting metabolic rate, determine your body composition through a session in the BodPod, or measure your current fitness level to guide your training or track your progress.

Fitness assessments are being offered on February 7, 21, and March 28, 2025 (9:20 a.m. - 12:20 p.m).

Pre-screening forms sent after booking, once answers have been reviewed by our students/faculty. All clients will receive a report with their results.

Register: Fitness Assessment Questionnaire

Aerobic Fitness Testing - $20 - Approximately 45 minutes

Use a stationary bike, a treadmill or a step to estimate your aerobic fitness. Useful to assess health related fitness, guide exercise and to track progress.

Submaximal Metabolic (VO2) Exercise Test - $75 -  Approximately 60 minutes

Exercise at a vigorous level using a stationary bike or a treadmill while having your oxygen consumption measured during the test. Beneficial for guiding training intensity and tracking progress of exercise training.

Maximal Metabolic (VO2) Exercise Test - $75 - Approximately 60 minutes

Push yourself to maximum exertion using a stationary bike or a treadmill while having your oxygen consumption measured during the test. Beneficial for athletes or anyone seeking an accurate direct measurement of their aerobic fitness.

Blood Lactate Threshold Test - $125 - Approximately 60 minutes

This is a test for endurance athletes who are serious about training. The test involves pricking the finger during each stage of the exercise test (on a treadmill or cycle ergo meter) to measure lactate concentration in the blood in response to the increasing exercise intensity. This testing is generally intended for those who are already training regularly and want more information or confirmation about their performance and training thresholds.

Resting Metabolic Rate (Resting VO2) - $80 - Approximately 45 minutes

Discover your resting metabolic rate by laying still and breathing into a mouthpiece connected to a metabolic cart. Useful for determining calorie expenditure.

Wingate Test (30-Second Anaerobic Power Test) - $25 - Approximately 20 minutes

Measure your power output during a 30-second maximal effort test performed on a Monark cycle ergometer (stationary bike). Beneficial for athletes requiring explosive power in their sport (e.g. jumping, sprinting, etc.).

BodPod - Add-On $15 | Stand-Alone $20 - Approximately 10 minutes

Determine your body composition (fat and fat-free mass). A full test requires about 10 minutes, and provides highly accurate, safe, comfortable, and fast test results.

Comprehensive Fitness Assessment -  No Metabolic Cart $120 | With Metabolic Cart $150 - Approximately 75 minutes

A package of tests used to assess: aerobic fitness (predicted based on exercise heart rate), strength, flexibility and body composition. This package includes either a bike or treadmill test, grip strength, sit and reach (flexibility), BodPod, height, weight, and blood pressure. Beneficial to set a base line or check your progress.

Microsoft Teams is our video hosting platform for live, online classes in Blackboard Ultra.

The recommended method for creating and sharing the link to an online synchronous class in Blackboard is to:

  • Create an event in Outlook Calendar: using your Humber credentials, copy the meeting link and post in the Course Content area and the Calendar in Blackboard. It's also a good idea to share the link via an Announcement in Blackboard.
  • Create a 'Class' event in Microsoft Teams: using your Humber credentials, copy the meeting link and post in the Course Content area and the Calendar in Blackboard. It's also a good idea to share the link via an Announcement in Blackboard.
  • Create a 'Class' channel in Microsoft Teams: copy the link to the team and share it with your students via an Announcement in Blackboard.

For more information about these options, please visit our creating a class meeting link for students to join virtually resource.

Important note: When we migrated to MS Teams for online classes in Summer 2023, we integrated a tool (MS Teams LTI) into Blackboard. Since that time, the MS Teams LTI has become increasingly unreliable. Blackboard no longer supports this LTI, and it has now officially been removed from Blackboard.
