A sunny day at the pond

The Humber Arboretum is excited to announce the launch of Humber’s Pond Revitalization Project!

Humber’s largest pond plays a key role in managing runoff water from Humber College's North Campus. The Humber Pond Revitalization Project is an innovative, collaborative initiative by the Humber Arboretum and its three founding partners - Humber College, TRCA, and City of Toronto. These partners have come together and re-imagined the pond as an outdoor classroom, living laboratory & social gathering space. The project will also improve water quality and create habitat for wildlife. Learn more about the vision, how it supports Toronto’s Ravine strategy, and the changes which will get us there on the Humber Arboretum website.

As you may have read, approximately 400 refugee claimants will be staying in the North Campus residence from June until August, with the first group arriving on June 1.

Since the initial note about this arrangement, we have had an outpouring of offers to support the people who will be living on campus. The process is still unfolding and at this point the City of Toronto and the Red Cross will be facilitating the support services for this group. There may be opportunities in the coming weeks to use our areas of expertise to assist them and we will continue to update the community as we move forward.

Humber and Seneca announced today the Humber-Seneca Polytechnic Partnership (HSPP) to collaborate on enhancing and expanding learning opportunities as students begin, continue or complete their postsecondary education.

The partnership’s focus is to find opportunities to collaborate, rather than compete. We have committed to consulting each other before designing new programs to avoid duplication and to identify potential pathways.

To launch the HSPP, we have identified two transfer pathways between diplomas and degrees: from Seneca’s graphic design diploma to Humber’s creative advertising honours degree and from Humber’s computer programmer diploma to Seneca’s software development honours degree.

Humber Galleries Call for Collaborators

Send us your ideas for collaborative exhibitions and public workshops!

Humber Galleries invites proposals from collaborators like you for programming in 2018/2019 at both our galleries: North Space and L Space (see space profiles here). We are interested in proposals from artists, collectives, curators, educators, neighbours, student groups, and cultural organizations. We particularly encourage proposals from people who are affiliated with Humber College, based in Etobicoke, and/or identify as emerging artists.

Applications will be reviewed by Humber Galleries staff. There is no fee for application. We offer standard CARFAC-RAAV fees (calculator available here).

We strongly encourage applicants to read our mandate; consider the unique geographic, community, and physical profile of each gallery; and research the territory we are located on. Successful proposals will be grounded and generative.

Application Requirements:

In order to be considered, applicants will provide the items below in a single PDF by the deadline: July 5, 2018, 4 p.m.

1. Bio/Statement (250 - 500 words): an introductory statement which gives us a clear understanding of your practice, experience, and accomplishments.

2. Project Description (250 - 500 words): a clear proposal of what you intend to produce with Humber Galleries. Please be sure to indicate which space you are interested in working with, any technical/AV requirements you wish to access, and foreseeable budget needs. If you are proposing a curatorial project, please include a list of artists you hope to work with. If you are proposing a workshop or symposium, please give as much detail as to what material needs you would require, who would be involved, and who your intended audience may be. We thoroughly encourage projects which engage with the Humber and Etobicoke community.

3. Curriculum Vitae (1 - 3 pages)

4. Visual Support Material (3 - 5 pieces): images must be in JPG format. You may include links to video and/or audio files (three minutes total). Please include a media list with details about each work clearly labelled.

All applications must be sent via email to galleries@humber.ca as a single PDF. Successful applicants can expect to hear back within six weeks of the application deadline.

Visit humbergalleries.ca for more info on our spaces and mandate.

OER Toolkit menu on The Learning Portal

OER Toolkit Launch

Humber Libraries in collaboration with College Libraries Ontario is proud to announce the official launch of the Open Educational Resources (OER) Toolkit.

The OER Toolkit is a one-stop guide to open educational resources, providing faculty and staff with tools and information to understand, engage with, create, and sustain OER in their work and practice. The Toolkit is designed to be used by anyone involved with OER at their college, whether you are part of a team that is collaborating to create OER, or an instructor seeking to incorporate OER and open pedagogy in the classroom. The primary purpose of the Toolkit is to support faculty and library staff at Ontario colleges; however, it is openly available for use beyond the Ontario college community.

Do you have ideas for using or adopting OER but are looking for collaborators? Here are some ways Humber Libraries can help you:

  • Collect and do initial vetting of supplementary materials
  • Use advanced search skills to find exactly what is needed
  • Give options for ways that students can access resources
  • Advise on how to make resources more accessible
  • Advise on issues of copyright and fair dealing
  • Advise on the use of Creative Commons licenses
