Building content that is mobile friendly should be on everyone’s radar when it comes to educating today’s Generation C student. The first step is to maximize the free Blackboard Mobile app, available on iOS and Google Play. The Bb app allows faculty to customize courses, view/edit discussion postings, launch announcements, view content, check your roster, and upload documents using Dropbox. Second of all, mobile friendly content can be built directly in the Bb course environment using the mobile assessment tool and pre-built HTML5 templates. Join this workshop to see how to tap into mobile teaching and learning.

With the faculty strike ongoing, please note that the College has received reports of incidents on the picket lines. We’d like to take the opportunity to remind the Humber community about protocol for crossing the picket line. Please be respectful of those who are on strike and avoid any confrontations.

Please consider the following points:

In a work stoppage, picketers are legally permitted to:

  • Carry signs stating the nature of the dispute.
  • Speak to you about their concerns.
  • Ask you to join the picket line, but cannot force you to do so.
  • Picketers are supposed to keep moving and allow passage, though there may be delays.

You may find the following suggestions useful when crossing a picket line:

  • Approach the picket line slowly.
  • Whether driving, walking or biking onto campus, be prepared to stop. Be prepared to wait until you can safely pass through the picket line. Be prepared for delays. Remember to operate your vehicle in a safe and lawful fashion. Roll down your vehicle window or otherwise indicate your willingness to communicate with the picketers.
  • Explain politely that you are exercising your legal right to come on campus or your obligation to report to work, or to conduct business on campus.
  • The picketers may provide you with information and wish to discuss the issues with you. If you are either unable or unwilling to engage them, please consider using the following response: “I’d like to exercise my right to come to work or to come on campus. Please let me cross the picket line.”
  • All college entrances are monitored through the use of electronic surveillance equipment.
  • College Public Safety officers will be monitoring the activity on the picket line.

If you are not allowed through the picket line, or if you feel threatened, do not attempt to force your way in. Do not become involved in any arguments or type of altercation. If you feel uncomfortable and wish to speak to someone for support you may call the HR hotline at: 416.675.6622 x5600. Above all, please exercise patience.

Throughout the month of November, the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre will be collecting and creating gift-filled shoeboxes in support of I Love First Peoples, a registered Canadian charity working to empower Indigenous children and youth through education. The packed boxes will be delivered to the children and youth living in the Kashechewan First Nation Reserve in February when the ice roads open.

How can you participate?
  • Donate an educational toy to contribute to the shoeboxes
  • Donate $5 to offset the cost of delivering the shoeboxes
  • Fill your own shoebox!

What goes in a shoebox?
  • Books, math games, arts and craft supplies, toys, card games, hats, mittens, socks, paint and brushes, modelling clay, fancy markers, beading kits, bells, hair accessories, jewelry, beauty products, etc.
*Focus on ages 3-16 years
*It is also hoped that every box will be filled with a note of encouragement and $5.00 to help transport the boxes north.

Where is the Kashechewan First Nation Reserve?
The Kashechewan First Nation Reserve is located on James Bay in northern Ontario. The Cree reserve has a population of 1700. It is accessibly only by air, water, and winter roads. The government located this reserve on a flood plain which has resulted in years of extreme flooding and evacuations every spring. This year, 1500 of the 1700 inhabitants were evacuated. Widespread mould in homes, severe skin infections, breathing problems, and undrinkable water continue to plague this reserve. Like many remote reserves, Kashechewan struggles with mental health issues, poverty, addiction, and suicides.

What happens at the end of November?
The Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre will deliver all collected shoeboxes to the Toronto chapter of I Love First Peoples. The shoeboxes will then be delivered along the ice roads to the Kashechewan First Nation Reserve on James Bay in February 2018.

Who is I Love First Peoples?
I Love First Peoples (ilovefirstpeoples.ca) is a registered charitable organization in Canada. Their mission is to empower children and youth through education and the motivation to stay in school.

There has been an increase in cyber security scams and malicious code being delivered by email (phishing scams) targeting colleges and universities in Canada and the US.

Phishing is a scam that pose as a legitimate source to trick a group of people or specific individuals (i.e. Spear Phishing) in an organization into handing over personal or financial information or even to download malicious software.
