The Business School would like to bid a very fond farewell to Murray Horowitz M.A. LL.B. as he retires at the end of this academic year.

Murray began teaching at Humber in 1989 on a contract basis and was then hired full-time as a law professor in 1993. Murray dedicated his life to teaching our students about the importance of law in business. Murray also served as the CE program law coordinator ensuring that mature students were supported while working full-time. In 2002, Murray taught business law to the first Guelph-Humber business administration cohort. He was a teaching pioneer, having taught the first degree level students at Humber. Many thousands of students have benefited from his exceptional dedication to student success and many faculty have been mentored under his guidance and leadership. Murray had a unique way of presenting materials to the class, he wrote “Aphorisms and Anecdotes” experiences in teaching and learning. Our favourite memory of Murray was our first trip to the Department of Justice where we secured our 15 year partnership. We will always remember Murray as a dedicated, soft spoken, gentle and passionate faculty in the business school.

On behalf of the Humber community and the Business School, we wish you all the best in your retirement years. Enjoy travelling with your wife and family.

The English Language Centre, in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, would like to bid a very fond farewell to Mary Koumoulas, as she has decided to retire at the end of this academic year.

Mary graduated with an M.A. in Linguistics and TESL Certification from the University of Pittsburg in 1982. In 1983, she began teaching at Humber in the Continuing Education department and as a sessional instructor across multiple campuses. She was then hired full-time in 1987 and her project was to begin developing the Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certificate program at Humber, which still exists today. She has also coordinated the TESL certificate program and practicum. She has delivered a variety of professional development workshops for practicum mentors and was involved in creating a mentoring package for them. Mary has also graciously presented at both local (TESL Ontario & CALL) and national conferences (TESL Canada) to share her expertise in developing practicum partnerships and ESL pedagogy. She has impacted thousands of students and teachers’ lives through our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and TESL programs. Additionally, Mary has been involved in TEFL/TESL training for internationally trained professionals and communication instructors. In 2005/2006, she worked on developing and delivering a professional development course for Humber postsecondary college faculty called “Teaching Content to ESL Students in Post-Secondary Programs."  Mary is also a published author. She co-wrote Canadian Concepts Teacher’s Manual & Resource Package and Focus 2: Academic Skills – books that have been used in the field of ESL for many years.

On behalf of the Humber community, her colleagues and I wish Mary the best in her retirement years.

Sincerely,

Irene Kosmas
Acting Director, English Language Centre

Julie Zomparelli has announced her retirement at the end of June.

Julie first joined Humber as a part-time faculty member in 1990 and has been instrumental in helping make Humber's Tourism program the leader in tourism education. In 2000, Julie became a full-time faculty member and spent several years working as a Program Coordinator.

Julie’s commitment to student learning and excellence has been consistently recognized by Humber College and her students. She has received several awards in the past including the Distinguished Faculty Award (2012) and the Extra Mile Award (2015). Most recently, Julie won the John and Suanna Rouche Excllence Award for excellence in teaching.

Students consistently cite Julie as someone genuinely invested in their time at Humber and beyond. She can be described as firm but kind - exactly the kind of instructor students enjoy learning from. She revels in their successes and is someone students can confide in. It is this balance that allows her to have a great personal and working relationship with so many students who come through the program.

Perhaps Julie’s biggest passion is providing students with International experiences while at Humber. Julie created and developed numerous opportunities for students to both travel and study abroad. This includes the Travel program’s Trip Planning class - a very unique class where students both plan and execute an international experience. Julie was also instrumental in developing a seven-week exchange in France and a Study Abroad trip to Europe.

Everyone who worked with Julie is certainly saddened she will no longer be with us as a full-time faculty member. That said, we are excited that she will move on to another, equally meaningful adventure and we are confident that she will stay closely connected with the Humber community.

Congratulations, Julie!
