The 2018 LAS Interdisciplinary Conference "Enlightenment 2.0 - What's Old is New Again" is scheduled for October 12 and 13, 2018 at the North Campus.

The Enlightenment represents a radical shift in thinking, from orthodoxy to empiricism, and from acceptance of doctrine, to the emergence of thought based on reason and philosophy. Does the spirit of the Enlightenment provide some guidance for us in terms of how best to navigate our current state of being? What would Enlightenment 2.0 look like?

The keynote speaker is Professor Joseph Heath from the Philosophy department of University of Toronto. Please submit abstracts of 100 to 250 words to lasconference@humber.ca by June 10. It is with mixed feelings I share the news that Sandra Cardinal is leaving Humber for a new opportunity at York University.

In her seven years at the College, Sandra has been warmly embraced by faculty, administrators and support staff. She has been instrumental in developing Humber’s profile as a leader in degree offerings, working closely with the Schools on numerous credentials. She has also led degree faculty through the hard work of consent renewals and has developed new pathways for students with a focus on access. In recent months, Sandra completely redesigned and rewrote the Program Planning, Development and Renewal website.

Most recently, people across Humber recognize Sandra as our central liaison for program mapping. Leading seemingly countless faculty workshops, she has helped programs redesign their learning outcomes in alignment with the Ontario Qualifications Framework and in a way that articulates the value proposition of a Humber education. It's her appreciation for the art and craft of this work, and her effervescent nature, that I will miss most.

While we will all miss her, we also send our very best wishes for her exciting new role as Director of Academic Partnerships and Planning at York. Please join us in a celebration for Sandra from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5 in the President’s Boardroom – LRC 6104.

The School of HRT has recently been granted official accreditation for the Massage Therapy Advanced Diploma by the Canadian Massage Therapy Council for Accreditation (CMTCA). This means that the program has been approved by an independent agency to meet pre-defined educational standards. 

We are proud to now offer this desirable national accreditaion to our current and future students. Humber College is one of only two Canadian schools that have achieved this standard. We’re delighted to announce the winners of our North American Occupational Safety and Health week draw. Anyone who wrote to tell us what they did for safety during NAOSH week was entered in a draw for gift cards. And the winners are…

  • The Humber Libraries Circulation Team – the whole team is working to reduce dust in the library. Thanks Amanda Van Mierlo for telling us about it!
  • Allan Brown, Central Plant Services – it was great to hear how careful Allan is when he works with ladders. He finds the right size, inspects it before use, then makes sure not to go past the second to last rung. Perfect!

The Humber College Council (HCC) held its eighth meeting of the 2017-18 academic year on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the Lakeshore Campus. To ensure that the Humber community is informed of upcoming events, new initiatives, and important issues, the College Council reports the highlights of its monthly meetings. Nominations for Chair and Vice-Chair for Humber College Council

Humber College Council members nominated Risa Handler, from Student Success and Engagement, for the College Council Chair position, and Denise Rooney, from Humber Libraries, for the Vice–Chair position. The two-year terms will commence in September 2018. Congratulations Risa and Denise!

The School of Social and Community Services: How to Create a Change Maker

Derek Stockley, Dean of the School of Social and Community Services (SSCS), and Neil Price, Associate Dean of the School of Social and Community Services, gave an overview of the school.

The School of Social and Community Services has 3200 students with nineteen programs over three campuses. The school operates under five core values: Compassion, Self-Awareness, Respect, Inclusion, and Integrity.

The school prides itself on being a Polytechnic leader. It sets itself apart from other institutions by offering:

  • Multiple pathways for students to gain their credentials – certificates, apprenticeship, diplomas, advanced diplomas, degrees, and post-grad certificates.
  • Partnerships – the school has over 800 placement partners and work-integrated learning experiences.
  • Innovative teaching spaces – play labs, crime scene labs, and a simulation lab.
  • Applied Research – the school is aligned with internal and external partners for student and industry projects.
  • Internationalization – semester abroad, independent placement abroad, and summer programs.

The school has also positioned itself into three clusters based on a holistic integrated approach: Human Services, Justice Studies, and Fire Services.

Following the presentation, council members participated in a tour of several of the school’s labs.

New Program: Honours Bachelor of Creative and Professional Writing

Paula Gouveia, Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS), Stephen Allen, Acting Associate Dean of the Department of English (LAS), Steve Bellamy, Dean of the School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCAPA), and Andrew Scott, Associate Dean of SCAPA, discussed the proposed Honours Bachelor of Creative and Professional Writing.

The four-year Honours Bachelor of Creative and Professional Writing is a collaboration between LAS and SCAPA. Demand for creative and professional writing programs has grown in Canada and Humber is well positioned to attract high quality applicants because of our rich history and reputation with current writing programs.

Courses will include creative writing workshops, writing for new media, poetry, professional writing, and the business of writing. There will be a major capstone project and internship required for graduation. Graduates will emerge from the program with the skills necessary to lead both artistic and practical lives in the multimodal field of applied communication.

Youth Transition Program @ Humber

Geraldine Babcock, Director of Community Outreach and Workforce Development (COWD), Nivedita Lane, Manager of COWD, and Paula Gouveia, Dean of LAS, provided an overview of the Youth Transition Program (YTP).

YTP is a post-secondary access program to assist local youth ages 19 to 29 in transitioning successfully to college, whether they have completed high school or not. The program has been designed using an Asset Based Community Development Approach. An extensive community and stakeholder consultation process was used in the design of this program, as well as a referral pipeline and a community advisory committee.

Upon completion of the program participants will be able to:

  • Identify college and community services, as well as facilities that are designed to help them with their goals.
  • Identify skills, abilities, and educational accomplishments necessary for admission into post-secondary programs.
  • Set both short and long-term career, educational, and personal goals.
  • Create a personal learning plan.
  • Implement strategies to successfully transition into post-secondary programs.

The program is eight weeks, the cost is free, and a lunch and transportation allowance is provided.

CICan Report

Nancey Adamson, Manager of Employee Engagement, and Jeremy Brooks, a faculty member at the School of Applied Technology, gave a brief overview of the CICan Conference held in Victoria, BC.

The theme of the conference was NA’TSA’MAHT: "working together as one".

Retreat Update and Elections Update

Risa Handler, Vice-Chair, and Kerry Johnston, Program Coordinator of Sustainable Energy and Building Technology, discussed the election results and the upcoming College Council Members retreat.

The retreat will be held on May 31st at the North Campus. This year’s theme is sustainability. Current and newly elected council members are invited to attend.

There will be no formal elections held to replace outgoing members. We will be welcoming fifteen new council members in September 2018. We are still seeking representatives for the following three areas: Liberal Arts & Sciences Lakeshore Faculty, School of Applied Technology Carrier Drive Faculty, and North Campus Schools Support Staff.

Humber’s diversity and willingness to help those in need has always been a key part our culture.

Our North Campus residence will be used this summer to help new refugee claimants have safe and supportive temporary housing. We expect that approximately 400 refugee claimants will be staying in residence from June until August, with the first group arriving on June 1.

The City of Toronto has partnered with the Red Cross to support the accommodation of many refugee claimants, and representatives from each organization are likely to be onsite daily. There may be opportunities for us to connect refugee claimants to our some of our programs and services while they are on campus.

We will share more information as it becomes available. This is a special opportunity for Humber to give back to the community and make a difference in the lives of these individuals.

A celebration of leadership and excellence Humber’s Employee Recognition and Awards Program was initiated in 1981 with the Distinguished Support Staff Appreciation Award being presented for the first time. 

Our 2018 program includes the following awards:

These award nominations are open to full-time employees at both Humber and University of Guelph-Humber who meet the requirements of the award criteria. 

Nominations must be received by Friday, May 25, 2018.
