Radio Humber proudly announces Adam Wylde, Amber Payie, Brad Barker, Maurie Sherman, Mora Austin and Ryan Doyle as the 2017 inductees into the Radio Humber Hall of Fame, proudly brought to you by the School of Media Studies & Information Technology and 96.9 Radio Humber. The recipient for the Builder’s Award will be Jerry Chomyn. This year’s honourees will be celebrated at the Hall of Fame ceremony at Humber College’s North Campus on Friday, March 24, 2017.

The 2017 recipients join an esteemed Hall of Fame class, which includes George Stroumboulopoulos, Roz Weston and Ashley Greco, among others. A full list of the current Radio Humber Hall of Fame members can be viewed here.

“The Hall of Fame also allows us to showcase the success stories to our current and future students, and let them know that they are in good company. The students understand that they are studying in the same classrooms and studios that these influential and successful people started to hone their craft and develop their skills,” said Andrew Ainsworth, Associate Dean of the School of Media Studies.

Humber’s diploma and postgraduate radio programs provide students with the skills to produce engaging and entertaining radio and audio content. Founded in 1972 by legendary radio broadcaster, Phil Stone of 1050 CHUM, Humber College’s Radio Broadcasting program has trained more than 3,000 aspiring broadcasters.

Humber Winterstations

Welcome to Winterstations 2017!

Students from four program areas will be featured as a winning institutional team in the third annual Winterstations Design Competition held at the Kew Beaches this winter. A design team comprised of students from all educational levels in Art Foundation, Visual and Digital Arts, Interior Design and Industrial Design were assembled through an open call for participation. The shortlisted group represents students from both the Schools of Media Studies and IT, and Applied Technology.

From late September to the present, the creative team developed initial concepts and a production plan, worked in the Living Arts Centre wood studio on construction, and assembled and vinyl-wrapped the structure at the Humber Art Commons. The team will install the piece this week; Winterstations will open to the public on Family Day, March 20th.

All members of the Humber community (and friends) are invited to attend the Winterstations gala on Thursday, Feburary 16th at The Duke Live (1225 Queen Street East, Toronto) from 6:30pm onward. The Humber student team will be in attendance at the gala where they will present their work.

Winterstations will run from February 20th - March 27, 2017 at the Kew Beaches south of Queen street East, east of Woodbine.

SUMMER VACATION PLANNING

Vacation time is an essential part of a healthy work-life balance. All staff are encouraged to schedule and plan their yearly vacation allotment in consultation with their manager. 

In order to ensure that requests are considered fairly and effectively, please be advised of the following guidelines and related articles from the Collective Agreements:

Academic Staff (Article 15 – Vacations)

Academic Staff (Professors, Librarians and Counsellors) are entitled to a two-month vacation period as scheduled by their manager. Managers, in consultation with the employee and HR, may arrange alternative dates for vacation periods depending upon academic and operational requirements. All requests should be submitted in writing. Please note: individuals may request to have vacation scheduled in other than a contiguous two-month block.

For the majority of academic staff, the two month 2017 summer vacation period is as follows:

Begins:          Monday, June 26, 2017

Ends:              Friday, August 25, 2017

Faculty return on Monday, August 28, 2017. Classes begin on Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

Support Staff (Article 11 – Vacation)

Vacations are scheduled using the following guidelines:

  • Support Staff are entitled to three (3) consecutive weeks of vacation as scheduled by the College, unless otherwise agreed. There is no guarantee that these three weeks can be scheduled during the summer months, but the College will consider these requests consistent with staffing requirements;
  • The vacation period of July and August is to be shared fairly amongst all employees. Recognizing operational needs may preclude certain vacation requests, the College will endeavour to accommodate all staff vacation requests. Consideration shall be given for length of service if a conflict arises;
  • Support Staff are required to submit their written vacation preferences to their manager by March 1, 2017. Managers will communicate the approved vacation schedule in writing within two weeks following the March 1st submission; 
  • Support Staff may carry over up to 15 days of vacation as of June 30th of each year, subject to an agreement with their manager to schedule the carryover days in the following year;
  • The College maintains a practice of not replacing staff while they are on vacation.

SUMMER HOURS AND STATUTORY HOLIDAYS

Summer Hours

During the period from May to August, where operationally feasible, management has the authority and discretion to establish summer working hours for their employees. These hours may vary from regular operating hours.

Summer hours usually mean that employees continue to work their full number of hours each week, but may start and finish earlier or later in the day. When considering requests for summer hours, managers are encouraged to engage in conversation to discuss feasible options while ensuring regular customer service is maintained.

College Holiday Schedule

The College will be closed on the following College Holidays during 2017:

Family Day                Monday, February 20

Good Friday              Friday, April 14

Labour Day               Monday, September 4

Thanksgiving            Monday, October 9

*Early Closings

Early closings for summer 2017 will continue as an avenue to recognize Humber’s dedicated faculty and staff. Further, this extra time is intended to support work-life balance initiatives.

Staff normally working on these days are encouraged to leave one and a half hours (1.5) early from the end of their regular work day. 

Subject to the operational requirements of the division/department, early closures apply to the following:

  • Friday, May 19 (prior to Victoria Day)
  • Friday, June 30 (prior to Canada Day)
  • Friday, August 4  (prior to the Civic Holiday)

Staff required to work full hours on any of the early closing days shall be given one and a half hours (1.5) off on another day during the summer, to be scheduled by the manager of the area.

Overtime pay on the early closing days shall apply only in situations where employees are required to work beyond their regular number of work hours and have the approval of their manager.

Statutory Holiday Pay

Staff required to work on a statutory holiday shall be paid time and one half for each hour worked, plus holiday pay.

Part-time staff may be eligible for holiday pay, plus time and one half pay, for hours worked on any statutory holiday.  To qualify for statutory holiday pay, part-time employees must have worked on their scheduled day of work preceding and following the recognized holiday.

Payments made to all part-time staff shall be equal to the total amount of regular wages and vacation pay payable to the employee in the four work weeks before the work week in which the statutory holiday occurred, divided by 20.

Celebrate and recognize the great work that your colleagues are doing by nominating them for the Innovation of the Year Awards 2017.

ELIGIBILITY:
• The purpose of the Innovation of the Year Awards is to recognize College employees who have designed and implemented a significant innovation that positively impacts the learning of students in the College.
• Employees from all employee groups (full and part-time faculty, administrators and support staff) are eligible for nomination.

CRITERIA:
The major criterion for nomination is that the innovation has: A Positive Impact On Students’ Learning.
Additional criteria to be used for judging the merit of an innovation and its impact on students’ learning are:
