Time is running out to register your kids for Humber Arboretum's Winter Nature Camp, coming up during the first week of January! Kids aged 5-12 can be registered for all four days (Tuesday January 3rd - Friday January 6th) or for individual days. Campers will enjoy:

  • nature walks and forest exploration 
  • animal tracking and orienteering
  • bird watching, including owl prowls and chickadee feeding
  • shelter building
  • arts and crafts 
  • introductions to citizen science projects
  • plus snowshoeing and tobogganing if weather permits

The regular camp day runs from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., however, we're offering FREE after-care until 5 p.m. to Humber College staff and returning summer campers! Before-care is also available from 8am for an additional fee.

Camp is $160 plus HST for the full week, or $45 plus HST for individual days.

To take advantage of the after-care offer, use the regular form to register for camp (and before-care, if desired) but do not select after-care during registration. Instead, as soon as your registration has been submitted, email us at arboretum@humber.ca.

Gift Certificate for the Intro to Urban Beekeeping Course

Do you know someone who's passionate about pollinators? Loves local food? Or is serious about sustainability? Show you support with a gift certificate for the new Sustainable Urban Beekeeping program at the Humber Arboretum, which explores small-scale urban apiaries with a focus on native bees and sustainable hive management. 

With this series of weekend classes and workshops, learners are free to pick and choose from topics of interest, or complete required courses and electives to earn a Sustainable Urban Beekeeping Certificate of Participation through Humber College.

Get Them Started with "Beekeeping 101"

The first course, Sustainable Urban Beekeeping: The Basics, will offer an overview of bee behaviour and anatomy, the beekeeping year, and practical matters such as site selection and necessary equipment. This indoor intro to the world of bees and urban beekeeping costs $75 plus HST and is scheduled for Saturday February 4th.

Anyone planning to take the full certificate can save over $300 by bundling the ten courses in advance for only $500 plus HST.

The Gift of Learning

Gift certificates are available for either the intro course or the full certificate bundle. You will be emailed a PDF certificate suitable for printing or sending electronically to the recipient.

Humber has been fortunate to see consistent student enrolment growth and a corresponding institutional commitment to student success. As a result, we are investing in new facilities and spaces for our learners, along with accompanying supports for employees.

In January 2017, construction will begin on two major North Campus projects: the creation of the new Centre for Technology and Innovation (CTI), and a new 1000-space parking garage.

Construction on the CTI will affect the lower section of parking lot 3, which will be closed. CTI construction is expected to be substantially finished by April 30, 2018.

The new parking garage will be located in the area that currently comprises lot 2 and the former W child care centre. Humber part-time staff and faculty who previously parked in Lot 2 and have purchased a valid parking permit for the winter semester have been moved to Lot 4, which is now gated card-access only. Substantial completion of this facility is expected by the end of February 2018, and will provide approximately 200 additional spots to the campus’s current parking capacity.

Please note that as a result of construction, there may be traffic congestion on Arboretum road, especially at entrance A (to/from Humber College Blvd) and in the areas by parking lots 3 and 4. Please allow for additional time when travelling to campus.

Reduced daily-rate and permit overflow parking is available at both the Queens Plate and Woodbine Mall parking lots, with a free shuttle to the North Campus running every 15 minutes. Reduced permit parking rates are also available at Woodbine Mall.

As we head into the 50th anniversary of Ontario colleges, Humber continues to operate in a period of institutional growth and innovation. While we recognize that these infrastructure projects can cause short-term disruption to campus life, we’re looking forward to working together to build on our many achievements and continue to support student success.

Reminder: Power Down Your Electronics for the Break

Before you leave for the holiday break, please consider taking a moment to power down all electronic equipment in your area. Powering equipment down will reduce the risk of damage should Humber experience a power-related event over the break.

At the same time, powering equipment down for the break will save electricity and help reduce Humber’s carbon footprint. Electronics to consider powering down include computers, monitors, projectors, display screens, printers, and copiers.

We are very pleased to announce the secondment of Kamini Steinberg to the Centre for Teaching and Learning. In her new role, Kamini will support faculty and program coordinators in their understanding and application of inclusive curricular design in both face-to-face and virtual classroom environments. She will also assist with the interpretation of legislation and policies that support student accessibility. Kamini will be working with the professional learning team to develop workshops and resources, as well as provide consultation to faculty and Program Coordinators on an as needed basis. 

Kamini completed her LL.M. with a focus on human rights. She has extensive experience with human rights, occupational health and safety and employment standards as well as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. She is a full time professor in The School of Business and has developed workshops on harassment and discrimination as well as the development of policy and procedure. CTL is excited to have Kamini on board to work collaboratively with faculty and departments to ensure Humber remains an accessible institution.

Humber has been integrating "Sustainability into Everything we do" for many years now.  We have been named one of Canada's Greenest Employers 2016, a Smart Commute Gold Workplace two years in a row (2015 & 2016), and just recently earned a second Silver level rating from the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) put on by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

We are currently in year 3 of the 2014-2019 Humber Sustainability Plan.  A new committee structure which includes the creation of a Sustainability Steering Committee (SSC) has been developed to ensure that we will continue to progress toward our goals. The SSC's primary mandate is to be a cross-institutional advisory body to the President, Executive Team and the entire college, that provides integrated, collaborative, evidence-based advice to ensure Humber's commitment to sustainability is reflected in planning and decision-making across the college. The SSC is responsible for the execution of the goals set out in Humber's 2014-2019 Sustainability Plan, as well as leading the development of future campus sustainability activity.

Members: The SSC is a cross-functional team of representatives from across the college. The SSC Terms of Reference commit members to a set of guiding principles that reflect the values and interests of the Humber community. Members will rotate over time. Current Members:

How to get involved: A primary function of the SSC is to engage with the Humber community regularly. We will ask for your involvement and ideas through the Communique.  We expect that working groups will be created to implement new initiatives and programs. We are proud to be STARS Silver!

We are very proud to announce that Humber re-certified with the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) certification and achieved a second Silver rating. The re-certification was done with the newest version 2.1 of STARS, the most robust to date. Humber has made great strides in campus sustainability since 2013 and even while the standards of most credits is much higher now, we have increased our score by more than 13 credits!

Be sure to attend the: Retirement planning - regional event at Seneca College on Saturday January 28, 2017.

  • How much money do I need to retire?

If these questions have ever crossed your mind, you should attend the upcoming retirement planning session.

The Saturday afternoon retirement planning event will be led by Derek Dobson, pension expert and CEO of the CAAT Pension Plan. He’ll answer the questions members ask about retiring. During Derek’s presentation, you’ll learn about the Plan’s benefits, including flexible retirement date options, valuable survivor benefits, and inflation protection. The session uses real-world examples and retirement planning tips to help ensure a smooth transition to retirement.

Representatives from the CAAT Pension Plan will be available to answer your questions after the presentation.

The session is free of charge, and open to CAAT Pension Plan members from any GTA college (and their guests).

Not thinking about retirement yet?
This session will benefit members of any age, and we strongly encourage all members over 50 to attend.

How helpful is the session?
Over 90% of members who have already attended a CAAT Plan retirement planning session say they would recommend it to others.

As the 100 Day Journey draws to a close, it’s important to reflect on how far we’ve come. Each participant has different reasons for having participated in the GCC, ranging from personal health goals, to increased engagement, or a desire to collaborate with colleagues. 

Humber had over 260 employees participate and together we walked, biked, and swam a total of 48,090 kilometers, which equates to walking around the world 1.2 times. 

You should all be proud of your journey, but remember, it does not have to end here. After today, you will have access to your GCC account for the next 8 months to continue your personal journey and further reinforce your new habits on your own. You can continue to track your stats, connect with other participants on GCC Community, monitor food intake with GCC Nutrition, keep a clear mind with GCC Balance, unwind with GCC Sleep and share cycling, walking or running routes with GCC Trailblazer. If you are seeking some extra motivation, you can continue to challenge others by setting up an individual Mini League. 

Today is the 100th day, but you will be able to log your steps before step entry closes on December 20, 2016.
