Dear colleagues,

Please see the research study notice below for information pertaining to a research study we are conducting throughout the fall semester at the University of Guelph-Humber. We would greatly appreciate your assistance in providing this information to interested members of faculty and staff. Please feel free to inform students about this opportunity too. All are welcome to participate.

Research study notice:

Dr. Adam Sandford’s research team is looking for participants in their research project that examines whether face-shape information supports recognition of faces. Participants will be tasked with recognizing faces under varying viewing conditions. This investigation will inform theoretical and practical discussions about underlying mechanisms and processes used in face recognition. In under one hour, participants of this study will each receive a $20 gift card for their contributions to our scientific investigation. More details about this study will be emailed to interested students and members of faculty and staff. These details are provided in an information letter, which will be attached to our email responses. Please note that the first study is taking place at the University of Guelph-Humber on Humber College's North Campus.

Powerful, personal and uncensored, The Reckoning: Hollywood’s Worst Kept Secret explores the most explosive scandal in pop culture’s history: sexual misconduct in American media. Looking closely at some of these events, the film provides context for the cultural changes we are seeing today. Please join us for a special screening and Q&A with producer Melissa Hood, picture editor Michelle Hozer, and #AfterMeToo advocate Vibika Bianchi to discuss the making of the film, and the new realities for women working in media.

Please complete Humber’s Employment Equity Questionnaire

Humber College is committed to principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The Employment Equity Act was passed in 1986. Recognizing that "systemic discrimination" was responsible for most of the inequality found in employment, the Abella Royal Commission on Equality in Employment outlined a systemic response and chose the term "Employment Equity" to describe the process.

To learn more about Humber’s Employment Equity program, please visit the Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity website.

The Centre invites all full-time, part-time, contract and sessional employees to complete the Employment Equity Questionnaire. The information that you provide in the Employment Equity Questionnaire will be kept confidential and will only be reported in aggregate form for Employment Equity purposes. In other words, the reported data will not contain any personal identification. Having up-to-date knowledge of our workforce representation will allow the College to identify where underrepresentation exists, and to target its efforts toward removing barriers that may exist in the College.

All Humber employees’ participation is important.

How can I access the Employment Equity Questionnaire?

  • Hard copies of the Employment Equity Questionnaire are being distributed to employee mailboxes. Please return the completed questionnaire using the included addressed envelope.
  • The Employment Equity Questionnaire (PDF) is also attached to this communique (below). The Employment Equity Questionnaire (PDF) can also be accessed on the Centre’s website. Please return the completed questionnaire to The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity, 5th floor LRC North Campus, or you can scan the completed questionnaire and email to Bharat Saini, Advisor, Human Rights, Equity & Diversity, at bharat.saini@humber.ca.

This is an introductory or beginner level class available at the City of Toronto pool adjacent to Building A here on campus.

This special opportunity is available only by registering through Humber International Centre. Only 16 spots are available!

The cost is C$110 and you get 9 x 1 hour lessons.

Advantages are:

  • The classes are for Humber students only, so nobody from the outside is there (e.g. no 5-year olds or seniors)
  • The classes are customized around your academic calendar, so you don’t have to divert time away from studying during midterms and finals
  • You don’t have the stress of lining up via phone/email on registration dates as this class is not available to the public

For the lesson, you will require a swimsuit and towel. Please note that the lessons are mixed gender.

Here is a description of the class:

Prerequisite: A keen interest in developing skills and knowledge that promotes safe enjoyment of aquatic environments. Adult 1 develops or increases students' comfort in the water through basic floatation, movement and breathing skills and fosters the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to prepare, stay safe and survive in and around water.

Class Details:
You can book yourself into either the Tuesday sessions, or the Wednesday sessions (you have to decide on one day, you cannot switch back and forth between them).

The lesson dates are as follows:
The Tuesday instructions take place on: October 30, November 6, 13, 20, 27, January 22, 29, February 5, 12.
The Wednesday instructions take place on: October 31, November 7, 14, 21, 28, January 23, 30, February 6, 13.
Please register and pay at the links below. Upon completion of the registration, you will receive a registration form that you need to fill out and return.

We are very pleased to announce that Human Resources Business Partner Services has two new team members.

Alain Fadel joins the team in the role of Human Resources Business Partner effective September 17, 2018. Alain joins us with more than a decade of Human Resources experience in the industry at Shred-It/Stericycle where he held a number of progressively responsible HR positions. Alain holds a B.A. from York University, a Masters degree in Labour Relations from University of Western Ontario and a Diploma in Human Resources Management from Sheridan College. As a result of Alain joining the team, there will be some changes to client allocation which will soon be reflected on the HR weblink at humanresources.humber.ca.

Kayla Moodie-Small has joined the team on contract in the role of HR Analyst, SWF Administrator. Kayla has experience as a summer placement within Human Resources at Humber, has experience as an HR Assistant/Recruiter with BOSS Staffing and has experience at Humber as a Career Support Peer Advisor. Kayla holds an Honours Degree in Sociology and an Honours Degree in Cognitive Science of Language from McMaster University and is a graduate of Humber's Human Resources post-graduate program at the Lakeshore Campus.

Please join me in welcoming both Kayla and Alain to the Humber team.

Please see the research study notice below for information pertaining to an online research study we are conducting throughout the fall semester at the University of Guelph-Humber. We would greatly appreciate your assistance in providing this information to interested students and members of faculty and staff of Humber College.

Research study notice:

Dr. Adam Sandford’s research team are seeking participants to inform us how many Canadians in the media they know by listing the names of individuals in an online form. This study is self-paced and can be completed anywhere. Participants of this study will be entered into a prize draw to be included in a chance to win one of 50 $25 gift cards. Participants’ contributions will help our development of a face database for the purposes of research on face recognition with colleagues in and outside Canada.

Interested students, faculty, and staff may contact Dr. Sandford's research team for more details and how to participate by emailing ghfaces@guelphhumber.ca. Our team will provide you with an information letter, which is also contained in the online study which uses a Google Form. Each interested student/staff/faculty is advised to read the information letter before proceeding to the Google Form.

Please be advised that Arboretum Blvd will be closed in front of the parking garage during the week after 6 p.m. and on weekends during the day to complete construction.

Dates: Daily from Tuesday, September 18 to Sunday, September 23, 2018 inclusive.
Times: Tuesday to Friday after 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Additional Details:

  1. Theses closures are necessary to accommodate a portable crane to complete construction of facade and roof elements on the new parking garage.
  2. During the Arboretum Road closures:
    1. Vehicles needing to access Parking Lot #1 should use entrance/exit ‘E’ at Humber College Blvd.
    2. Vehicles exiting Parking Lot #1 should use entrance/exit ‘E’ at Humber College Blvd.
  3. An alternate vehicular route around the road closure is available through Parking Lot #3.
