Humber is becoming a greener campus and everyone is participating! Humber Sustainability Highlights features how departments around the college are integrating sustainable practices. This month’s focus is the Department of Public Safety, whose responsibility is providing a safe and secure campus for the Humber community. Public Safety had been looking for ways to green their operations and saw their patrol fleet as a good place to start. This past summer, Public Safety introduced electric “Sentinel” patrol vehicles and three Hybrids in an environmental initiative to replace their fleet of Jeep Wranglers.

How Green Can You Go?

The Sentinels, three wheeled electric powered standup vehicles, are able to go where traditional vehicles cannot in the event of an emergency.

Fully electric: Eliminates gas consumption
Zero emissions: Improves outdoor air quality in our community

The Hybrids, Subaru XV Crosstreks, are fuel-efficient, eco-friendly SVUs that operate in all weather conditions 365 days a year.

Automatic stop/start system: Emits less CO2 gasses that contribute to climate change
Regeneration: Wheels are used to recharge the battery pack instead of plugging it in
EV mode: Uses battery instead of gas when at a reduced speed
EPA: Has a low miles- per- gallon Environmental Protection Agency estimation

Rob Kilfoyle, Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management, is very excited about the initiative.

“They have been well received by the community… Primary Response has been an excellent partner with Humber College and was only too happy to help us meet our own departmental sustainability objectives.”

The Humber Sustainability Plan 2014-2019 illustrates how Humber is leading the way in creating a more sustainable future.
