Skills Ontario is coming to Toronto!
For more than 15 years, Humber has been participating in Skills Ontario: Canada’s largest skilled trade and technology competition.
Beginning this year, Humber proud to serve as the host college for this exciting event which takes place May 1-3, 2017 at the Toronto Congress Centre.
Post-secondary competitions take place on Tuesday, May 2nd and everyone in the Humber Community is invited to come to the competition and cheer on our competitors! Parking is a challenge, so we have arranged for shuttle bus service from Humber’s North campus to the Toronto Congress Centre and back throughout the day.
The free shuttle will be going from Humber North/Carrier to the Toronto Congress Centre at 9:30, 11:30, 1:30, and 3:30. The shuttle will be picking up/dropping off in Parking Lot 7 at Humber North Campus, just outside the LRC.

Humber’s Employee Recognition and Awards Program was initiated in 1981 with the Distinguished Support Staff Appreciation Award being presented for the first time. Over the years, the program has evolved with awards being added and some “retired”. Last year, Humber’s Employee Engagement Recognition Committee was asked by the Executive team to review all of Humber’s recognition and appreciation programs. Based on the feedback from both the Employee Engagement and the Recognition Surveys recommendations were made and adopted for this program.
Our 2017 program includes the following awards:
These award nominations are open to full-time employees at both Humber and University of Guelph-Humber who meet the requirements of the award criteria.
Nominations must be received by Friday, May 26, 2017.
Unless noted otherwise, nominations are reviewed by a panel of past award recipients and recommendations are presented to the College President.
Presentation of the awards will be made at the President’s Breakfast being held on Monday, August 28, 2017.
You are invited to provide nominations with respect to our Annual Employee Recognition and Awards program.
If you require assistance in completing the nomination form, or have questions about this program, please contact Nancey Adamson, Manager, Employee Engagement: nancey.adamson@humber.ca or x5540.

INNOVATION OF THE YEAR AWARD 2017
The Innovation of the Year Award recognizes employees who have designed and implemented significant innovations that positively impact the education of students at Humber College.
This years’ Humber Innovation of the Year Award recipients are Anthony VanHoy in recognition of his “Math applets and their uses in Humber math courses” project and the PRC Faculty in recognition of their “Humber PRC Career Excellence” project.
Anthony introduced math applets, which are computer generated interactive demonstrations, to provide students with additional tools for studying. This tool blends symbolic interpretations with visual and spatial representations. Anthony created a simple math applet that allows users to make direct modifications to variables in a sine or cosine function and see the changes instantly.
This project has provided a repository of math related applets for Humber College students and faculty use. It is available to all with access to the internet and a desktop or laptop.

The Humber PRC Faculty began a new initiative, “Humber PRC Career Excellence”, that provides students with meaningful career options. It takes into consideration the uniqueness of the PR industry, specific requirements and the desire of students to find the perfect fit for a PR career. The PRC faculty connect students with PRC grads and personal industry contacts, review resumes, portfolios and writing samples, and coach students prepping for interviews.
Since its inception in 2016, this initiative has exceeded the mandate of applied learning by demonstrating, acting, and implementing a formalized process of connecting the students to the industry in a meaningful and impactful way. As a result of its proactive approach, this initiative helps to make a positive and lasting impression for the students.
Contributing PRC Faculty: Annette Borger-Snel, Catherine Pike, Kalene Morgan, Nancy Marino Benn, Robert Plant, Edward Wright, Susan Walsh, Sharleen Mascoll, Louise Sheedy, Vivienne McCuaig, Anne Longmore and Sara Taylor
This years’ League Innovation of the Year Award recipients are Michael Kopinak and Natalie Elisha in recognition of “#HereToPlay” campaign. The collaboration between the Department of Athletics and Recreation and the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre is the first innovation of its kind in the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA). The purpose of this innovation was to create an inclusive environment. This inclusiveness enhances the Humber community’s social and competitive experiences by promoting diversity of culture, race, religion, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. After establishing guidelines and requiring students and staff to attend training courses regarding hazing and bullying, the facilities have seen an 18 per cent increase in memberships once the campaign became active.
