Kent Schroeder was surprised and, yes, happy to receive an award for his research on Bhutan’s unique development strategy, Gross National Happiness.

Schroeder, program coordinator of The Business School’s International Development Degree, received the “certificate of appreciation” from the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay, during a conference in the South Asian nation in November.

Schroeder was attending the 6th International Conference of Gross National Happiness: From GNH Philosophy to Praxis and Policy, when he was surprised to be called onstage to receive the award.

He is one of eight recipients from around the world who have contributed to GNH, a strategy based on sustainable socio-economic development, preserving cultural values, conserving the environment and fostering good governance.

Under the aegis of The Business School, Schroeder had been involved in the past in co-designing and delivering a management training project to the public sector in Bhutan.

“These experiences demonstrated to me that there was something interesting and different happening in Bhutan, and that was really the basis for my research project.”

Schroeder’s unique thesis “The Politics of Gross National Happiness” looked at the practical application of the concept on the ground, not just the theory of it — similar to The Business School’s approach to teaching applied, practical applications.

Schroeder’s thesis also led to a symposium, hosted by The Business School at Lakeshore Campus in the spring of 2015, for the NGO community.

“Beyond GDP: Development Alternatives to Growth” sold out quickly and proved to be a success that exceeded expectations. Speakers included Jigmi Y. Thinley, the former prime minister of Bhutan, as well as representatives from organizations including World Wildlife Fund, World Vision, UNICEF and the David Suzuki Foundation.

As for Schroeder, his work continues. “I hope to continue to focus on GNH research, particularly through developing partnerships for The Business School that look for ways to grow ideas and movements.”

Course Materials Request Reminder:

The North Campus Bookstore is currently processing Course Materials (textbook) requests for the January term which is only weeks away and encourage all schools to urgently submit their requests if they have not already done so. Our original request date was October 16, 2015. Receiving your requests early allows us to source materials from a wide variety of vendors ensuring we have adequate inventory levels. We begin placing orders with vendors starting November 18 for requests we have in-store.

Our goal is to have every course material available for the launch of our booklist online December 19, 2015. If you have not submitted your request there are two ways to submit them

NOTE: If you require a copy of your previous term information, please let us know and we will either email it to you or drop it off at your location.

The School of Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism celebrated the retirement of faculty members Micheal McFadden (Culinary/Baking & Pastry Arts), Dawn Aiken (Tourism) and Mary Lendway (Tourism) this year.

Micheal McFadden started with the culinary program over 30 years ago and has been an instrumental part of the Culinary and Baking and Pastry programs since their inception. His dedication, passion and fortitude to assure students receive the best possible learning has always been his first priority. He always had a keen eye in identifying new opportunities for the programs to make them what they are today: cutting edge and world renowned programs. Micheal has garnered a lot of respect and admiration from his peers and administration for his wholehearted and passionate dedication towards the students and the trade he represents. Micheal continues to work with us on a part-time basis.

Dawn Aiken started with us in 1990 and taught several courses in the Tourism Management program. She also took on the role of Program Coordinator for the Hospitality Management program. Dawn brought her love of travel with her into the classroom and beyond, taking her and many students to locations such as London, England, Beijing, China, Taiwan and more. Her leadership with the Study Abroad program expanded her and her students' love for travel. Dawn was extremely dedicated to her students - here at Humber and abroad.

Since joining Humber College in 2007, Mary has taught a variety of subjects including Tourism Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Niche Tourism and Sustainable Tourism. In addition to teaching, Mary coordinated the Tourism Management program for four years and has been a key driver of curriculum development and industry relations. She is a passionate educator dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism and global service learning through innovation in education, and providing students with transformational learning experiences. In 2011, Mary was the recipient of the Innovation Award for creating, developing and successfully implementing the Study @ Sea Program and in 2015 received the Sustainability Award for her commitment to sustainability at Humber and around the globe. Mary continues to work with us on a part-time basis.

College Council Highlights: November 2015

Humber College Council held its second meeting of the Fall semester on Thursday, November 12 at the North Campus. In the interest of keeping the Humber community informed about upcoming events, new initiatives, and important issues, I will be continuing to report the highlights of the monthly meetings.  For more information on any topic, or to give me feedback on the reports, please feel free to contact me directly at lisa.salem-wiseman@humber.ca.

Staff and Children’s Holiday Party #snowmuchfun

Brian Wilson and Shakira Garell, students in the Public Relations Postgraduate Program, told Council members about Humber’s Annual Staff and Children’s Holiday Party. This event is sponsored by the President’s Office, supported by the Faculty and Support Staff Unions, and organized by the students in the PR Postgraduate program.

The party will be held at the Lakeshore Campus, Building L, on Saturday, November 28 from 8:30-11:30 AM. This year’s theme is “Snow Day” and the event will feature a hot breakfast, as well as cookie decorating, crafts, balloon artists, decorations, a photo booth, and, of course, Santa Claus. Nonperishable donations to the Daily Bread Food Bank can be exchanged for raffle tickets. The event is BYOP (Bring Your Own Pyjamas).

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children, and are available at the bookstores at the North and Lakeshore campuses (cash only), or online at humbersnowday.eventbrite.com

Donations to Ernestine’s Shelter

As it does every year, College Council’s December meeting will include a fundraiser for Ernestine’s Shelter, a shelter for women and children leaving violent home situations. As the women often arrive at Ernestine’s in the middle of the night, with no supplies, donations of toiletries and baby items (including diapers) are welcomed, as well as toys and gifts. If you would like to make a donation, please contact your College Council representative.

New Programs

Graduate Certificate in User Experience Design

This two-semester graduate certificate program, proposed by the School of Media Studies and Information Technology, would provide pathways for degree and diploma holders in the growing employment field of User Experience Design (UXD). UXD studies the larger context surrounding innovations in order to ensure that all the interactions between people and the products or services they use are as productive, enriching, and enjoyable as possible. Currently, there is no specialized degree in the field, but there are many skills that UX designers find useful, and Humber proposes to package these skills together in a unique graduate certificate program. This program will offer an additional pathway from graduates from existing diplomas and degrees offered by the School, demonstrating Humber’s strategic commitment to polytechnic education.

Bachelor of Design

This unique eight-semester Baccalaureate degree program, proposed by the School of Media Studies and Information Technology, would provide pathways for students in the emerging field of User Experience Design (USD). Responding to the high demand in the labour market as organizations develop digital technologies, the program would offer students a combination of creative, critical, and technological learning opportunities, as well as provide students with numerous opportunities to connect with practicing professionals through industry mentorship and field placement opportunities.

In keeping with Council’s new mandate to report back to the President on key items, members of Council met in small working groups to discuss the evening’s presentations and to make notes that will be brought to the President.

The next meeting of College Council will be held on Thursday, December 3, at the North Campus.

There are over 40 publicly accessed AEDs (automated external defibrillators) installed throughout Humber campuses and buildings. Additional AEDs will be installed in the LRC and the new F building extension in the near future. As a continuation of the AED initiative and to complement the presence of Public Safety security guards who are trained in first aid, we are looking at growing a roster of Humber employees who are trained in CPR and the use of AEDs throughout all Humber buildings. HRS|Health and Safety Services have been scheduling a series of CPR/AED courses focusing on members from Humber’s Emergency Response Team and Joint Health and Safety Committee.

The following First Aid, CPR and AED training courses have been scheduled for this November:

  1. CPR/AED - North Campus (Room E411), Fri, Nov 20, 2015, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
  2. CPR/AED - North Campus (Room E411), Fri, Nov 27, 2015, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
  3. Standard First Aid (includes CPR/AED)
    • North Campus (Room TBD), Thu, Fri, Dec 10 and 11, 2015, 9 am to 5 pm.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED Training (half-day):

The 5 hour CPR/AED course will be provided by a Red Cross First Aid/CPR instructor and is intended to provide the skills and confidence needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking either in the workplace or at home. The course will also familiarize you with the AEDs that have been installed on campus and how to use them. Successful completion leads to a CPR certification from the Canadian Red Cross.

Our November courses are open to Humber College employees, particularly those who work in close proximity to an AED. In addition, we encourage employees who work in the LRC or in the new F building extension to sign up for these courses in preparation of the AEDs that will be installed in the near future.

First Aid & CPR/AED Course (two days):

This comprehensive course offers first aid and CPR skills for those who need training for work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home. The course covers a variety of topics from basic (circulation and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission) to in-depth topics (sudden medical emergencies and injuries to the head and/or spine). Successful completion leads to a Standard First Aid and CPR certification from the Canadian Red Cross.

The First Aid & CPR/AED course is highly recommended for members of the ERT and the JOHSC, as well as Humber employees who work in locations away from the main campuses (i.e. Fashion Institute).

To Register: Please email Humaira Pirooz at humaira.pirooz@humber.ca and state the session that you would like to attend. Ensure your manager approves your attendance.

Please note that those with a current First Aid or CPR/AED certificate are not eligible for this training.
