Have you hired work-study students for the summer? If their duties include working on marketing and communications materials for your team, we highly encourage setting up a brand introduction workshop.

All Humber employees, including work-study students, are welcome to attend a Humber brand workshop to learn about the resources and services available.

The workshop, which is less than one hour, is available year-round. It is customizable to meet your team’s needs and we will come to you at a convenient time. All we need is an A/V hookup with a projector/screen and space for your team to sit.

Thank you for ensuring proper use of Humber’s brand.

Please contact Rebecca Fox, Marketing and Communications at rebecca.fox@humber.ca to set up a workshop, and visit www.humber.ca/brand to learn what we can do for you and your team.

The School of Health Sciences is happy to announce that the University of New Brunswick (UNB)-Humber new degree completion pathway program has received a seven-year accreditation term from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing.

This accreditation, which is the maximum length possible to receive, acknowledges the strengths of Humber’s educational unit and nursing education program. The degree completion program allows students who have completed a Practical Nursing diploma to gain advanced standing in UNB-Humber’s Bachelor of Nursing program.

A great big thank-you to the many faculty and administrators who participated in the Faculty Service-Learning survey. We received a total of 240 responses from all eight academic schools.

Through the data we collected, we have a better understanding of how service-learning is perceived, and the interest and motivation levels of faculty to carry out service-learning. Over the course of the summer we will complete a more thorough analysis of the data. In the meantime, please find some of the initial survey results below.

Congratulations to Jimmy Vincent and the Centre for Urban Ecology team at the Humber Arboretum! The team received a community service award from Ernestine Women’s Shelter (EWS) for their ongoing sponsorship since 2012 of children from EWS to attend the Centre for Urban Ecology’s nature camps. This sponsorship has been made possible with support from Humber College’s Community and Partnership Grant and HRT Green Team fundraisers.

Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter was opened in 1983 by a group of Etobicoke community members who saw the need to create a safe place for women and children wishing to leave abusive situations. Since that time, Ernestine’s has assisted over 5000 families with critical and immediate services.

Building on 18 years of outstanding service and dedication I am pleased to announce the appointment of Robert (Rob) Gray as Horticultural Technologist for the Humber Arboretum, effective May 18, 2015.

Rob first joined Humber in 1998 as a workstudy student in the Humber Arboretum while completing Humber’s Urban Arboriculture Certificate. Shortly thereafter, in 2002, Rob became an Instructor for the School of Applied Technology’s Horticulture Apprenticeship and Landscape Technician programs and later became the Program Co-ordinator. In Rob’s most recent position as a Horticulture Technician and Arborist at the Humber Arboretum he has played an instrumental role facilitating and coordinating experiential learning course components as well as applied research and capstone projects in the Arboretum from over seven different Humber programs. Rob will be building on this experience in his new role as the most senior member of the Arboretum’s landscape team.

One little known fact about Rob is that prior to working at Humber he was Captain of Canada’s Men’s Softball Team. His well-developed combination of leadership, organizational and teamwork skills are an ongoing asset to Humber’s team.

Rob holds a Horticulture Diploma from the University of Guelph and is an ISA Certified Arborist. Rob reports to Alexandra (Alix) Link, Director, Humber Arboretum & Centre for Urban Ecology. Please join me in congratulating Rob Gray on his new role!
