Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning is pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Somerville as Dean School of Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism, effective October 21, 2013.

Susan has over 20 years of industry experience in both the public and private sectors in the fields of healthcare and foodservices. Susan first joined Humber in September 2010 as the Program Co-ordinator and Professor for the Food and Nutrition Management program. In her role she taught and developed curriculum, established industry partnerships and has acquired capital donations for the school. The program, still in its infancy has received a three year accreditation from the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management and eighty percent of its graduates have gained employment in their field. Susan has also been instrumental in improving enrolment numbers in the Food and Nutrition program by creating accessibility and pathways for our existing students. The program has increased from 12 to 140 students.

In her new role, Susan will be responsible for leading a team of academic administrators, program coordinators, faculty and staff. She will be responsible for implementing and shaping the vision for the School and creating dynamic and innovative learning environments that build and foster relationships with external partners as well as the Deans from the other Schools at Humber. Susan will also advance and champion the School through relationship development within, across and outside the Humber community. Susan is a Registered Dietitian and completed a Post Graduate Canadian Dietetic Association Program at the Fraser Burrard Hospital Society and she holds an Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Western Ontario.

Please join me in congratulating Susan on her most recent success!

Introduction of the Executive Advisory Council (EAC)
To the Humber Community

Humber has been evolving at an accelerated pace over the course of the last year. Under the leadership of President Chris Whitaker, a new organizational structure and a five-year Strategic Plan, approved by the Board of Governors, has been introduced. An additional and related change is the transformation of what was previously known as the President’s Executive Council (PEC) to a new executive advisory group. The Executive Advisory Council (EAC) was formed in response to President Whitaker and the executive team’s need for an advisory group that could facilitate a collaborative, integrated and evidence-based approach to decision making.

The Executive Advisory Council’s primary mandate is to serve as a key advisory body to the president and executive team – and effectively the college at large – to support the implementation and successful achievement of our five-year goals as identified in the 2013 -18 Strategic Plan.  Specifically, EAC has been tasked with ensuring an integrated approach to identifying the key initiatives in Humber’s annual business plan/budget and the well-aligned, integrated and successful implementation of those initiatives.

EAC Members

The Executive Advisory Council is a cross-functional team of representatives from key areas across the college.  The EAC Terms of Reference commit EAC members to a set of principles, including using a transparent, consultative and integrated approach that reflects the values and interests of the entire Humber community.

At its inception Alister Mathieson and Jason Hunter were the co-chairs who gave EAC its initial shape and form. Following the organizational restructuring Gina Antonacci has replaced Alister Mathieson as EAC co-chair and after a transition period a replacement for Jason Hunter as co-chair will also be appointed.

Commemorative e-book recounts the history of comedy in Ottawa

Humber College’s Comedy: Writing and Performance alumnus Ryan Belleville hosted the Canadian Comedy Awards in Ottawa on October 6, 2013. The ceremony, which was the culminating event for the  weekend-long Canadian Comedy Awards Festival, also featured a performance by a fellow comedy program graduate Nikki Payne.

To commemorate this year’s festival, Humber commissioned John Mazerolle, a graduate from the comedy program, to write an e-book about the history of comedy in Ottawa. Ottawa: Gateway to Carp – Comedy in the Nation’s Capital features anecdotes and memories from Ottawa comedians including Tom Green, Mike MacDonald, Norm Macdonald and Rick Mercer. Ottawa: Gateway to Carp is published by the Humber Press and edited by comedy program co-ordinator Andrew Clark.

“We’ve been involved with the comedy awards for years, and we thought that a history of Ottawa comedy would be a unique contribution to this year’s event,” said Clark. “There hasn’t been a history like this one up until now. Ottawa’s an interesting place – it takes itself very seriously, of course, but it’s also just a little wild. Many of the comedians that come from Ottawa take that serious side and completely flip it over.”

The book is composed exclusively of first-person anecdotes from 26 different people. The e-book is available for download directly from Humber Press.

TRANSITION & ADVISING PROGRAMS (TAP)
First Generation Students

October 17, 2013

Dear Faculty and Staff,

The Transition & Advising Program (TAP) is a resource to assist First Generation students in achieving their personal and academic goals at Humber College. By joining the TAP Program, students benefit from small group mentoring and advising on a weekly basis from peer student leaders.

We could use your help!

  1. Help us recommend and recruit first generation students in their first semester at Humber College to the TAP program. Simply hand them a TAP card with all the days and times for TAP group sessions. They do not have to register ahead of time and can simply drop in. Remind them that TAP is a free program that has many benefits including:

a. Workshop topics including: study skills, time management, presentation skills and more
b. Social activities
c. Guest speakers
d. A chance to make new friends and be mentored by a senior student
e. Food and weekly prizes!

Where can we get the TAP cards? We would be happy to deliver the TAP cards to your academic school or faculty offices for distribution. Kindly contact Kamla Ross at kamla.ross@humber.ca or 416.675.6622 ext.5887 for more information.

  1. Help us recruit TAP student leaders for the winter semester. This is a paid position for students who are in their third semester. This is a wonderful leadership opportunity and a way for students to build their facilitation skills. Recruitment for these positions starts in November 2013. Simply ask students to complete an application form and package through the TAP website. Remind them that being a TAP leader has many benefits including:

a. Excellent paid leadership opportunity
b. Responsible for facilitating weekly group sessions
c. Play an important role in helping First Generation students feel connected
d. Learn transferable skills

Sincerely,

Kamla Ross-McGregor

It’s that time of year again! At least once a semester faculty need to input their grades through LIS; a sub-component of the college’s registration system. Using LIS, faculty are expected to enter/upload their mid-term and/or final grades. The Managing Your LIS Webinar will cover how to enter one’s grades, how to export and import a grade form, and how to adjust your Blackboard Gradebook to allow for importing into LIS. Contact the Waterloo Student at the North or the Lakeshore to find how easy it can be to submit and manipulate your grades using LIS.
