On Tuesday, October 8, 2013,  under clear skies and with warm weather the students in the Business Administration – Professional Golf Management program participated in their annual orientation golf tournament.  This year the students played at the par 72 Copper Creek Golf Club in Kleinberg.

The team who won the tournament consisted of students Patrick Alves, Carl Finnigan, Conor Hache, and Barrett McCarthy. All participants had the option to play in the skins game, giving them the opportunity to win a cash prize if they have the best score of all players on a particular hole. This year we only had one winner - Javier Diaz - who scored an eagle on the 18th hole!  We raised $300 which was donated to the Humber United Way Campaign!

Special thanks to all faculty who made this event such a success!

On Monday, October 7, Chef Kantor provided a cooking demonstration for HRT culinary students in the afternoon prior to the screening of the film El Bulli: Cooking in Progress. The screening was followed by a lively Q&A and a tasting of the dishes prepared earlier in the day. All of which took place in the recently renovated Humber Room. Fabulous!

On behalf of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism, and the Department of Liberal Studies Film Series, I would like to thank all the people involved in making this second of three installments of the Cinema + Chef series a success. The list of people involved in making these events possible is a long one, but a special note of gratitude goes out to the following: Caleb Yong, Alexander Shvarts, Jennifer Marotta and Sonia Hoy (LAS), Michael O'Leary, Rudi Fischbacher, and Antonio Folino (HRT), and Jason McCourt and Peter Weinzettle (Media Services).

The next and final installment of the Cinema + Chef series is on Monday, October 21, 2013 in the Humber Room. Please watch for details on HTV or visit:www.humber.ca/liberalarts/liberalstudies/filmseries.

After 37 years of significant contributions to Humber, Laurie Turner, Associate Dean, has decided to retire at the end of the semester in December.

Laurie first joined Humber as a professor in the fashion careers program in the Business School. She moved on to become Program Coordinator for the Business Management and Business Administration diplomas, and then became the Associate Dean for diploma programs. In her 37 years of service, Laurie has taught, mentored, and graduated thousands of domestic and international students from her programs.

Laurie was instrumental in developing study abroad programming for diploma students in Lyon, France and Quebec. Laurie sat on numerous committees, including the academic framework and sustainability committees and is an integral part of the college community.

Laurie also represented the college on numerous conferences across Canada, and this past summer was crucial in the development of the Business School’s first two collaborative classrooms located on both the North and Lakeshore campuses.

We will miss Laurie. She has worked very hard on behalf of her faculty and students and deserves to enjoy more time with her friends and family.

Please join me in wishing Laurie all the best in her retirement!

Dean, The Business School

Humber Research is pleased to announce that Humber faculty Amanda Baskwill has been awarded a Canadian CAM Research Fund (CCRF) grant from the Canadian Interdisciplinary Network for Complementary & Alternative Medicine Research (IN-CAM) to investigate the use of an information video to improve the experience of massage therapy patients.

This project will investigate the effect of showing an educational video to patients visiting a massage therapy student clinic for the first time. Baskwill, a faculty member in the School of Hospitality, Recreation, & Tourism, and Bryn Sumpton, a co-investigator at the Registered Massage Therapists’ Association of Ontario, anticipate that providing a video, instead of only written information, will better educate patients on what to expect in their treatment—ultimately leading to better patient satisfaction, preparedness, mood, and empowerment. Baskwill says that “if patients understand the nature and purpose of the assessment and treatment process that is a part of massage therapy, they may be more empowered to ask questions, feel less anxious about the experience, and feel more satisfied with the overall appointment.”

The study is expected to benefit not only patients who attend the massage therapy clinic, but also student massage therapists who will have new opportunities for feedback and improvement when completing assessments and treatments. Additionally, students in Humber’s Massage Therapy Advanced Diploma program will be hired to work as research assistants and will gain practical research experience in their field of study. If successful, the study has the potential to benefit other student therapists, and Complementary and Alternative Medicine therapists, in developing similar patient educational videos, which would in turn benefit other patients.

Congratulations to grant recipient Amanda Baskwill, and thank you to all the students and partners who have and will continue to collaborate on this exciting project.

Thank you to everyone that responded to our survey in July regarding food delivery at Humber! Unfortunately, a drop off location on campus isn’t possible at this time but we still wanted to promote having locally-grown food delivered to your home. We researched several fresh food delivery companies operating in the GTA and are pleased to present you with our top choices: Fresh City Farms and Mama Earth Organics. Because the Fresh City Farms delivery area is limited, we selected another great company that delivers throughout Toronto and the surrounding area.

Both companies are happy to offer special group discounts to Humber staff and faculty:

Fresh City Farms is a city farm in Toronto. They deliver* local, organically grown produce right to your door. As a Humber staff/faculty, you can get 50 per cent off your first Fresh City bag. Order online and use the promo code HUMBER13 when you sign up.

*Your home address must be within the bounds of their current delivery area. To learn more, please visit http://www.freshcityfarms.com/get-a-box/faq/ (scroll down to “Where do you deliver?”)
