It is with great excitement and anticipation that we invite all faculty and staff to share their stories of inspiration in a fun and creative format.

The Centre for Teaching & Learning will be hosting an exhibit at the L Space Gallery during Doors Open, Toronto and Showcase, 2014

Faculty and staff enrich the lives of our students both in and outside the classroom every day. We are inviting you to share your experiences.

What kinds of innovated approaches have you used to make a difference? How were these innovations inspiring to both you and
your students?

Please see the attached flyer containing information on how you can participate in this creative adventure.

It is with mixed emotions that I am announcing Joe Tomona’s retirement as of this August. While I am pleased that he’s entering a new phase of his life, the School of Applied Technology and the Humber community will be saying goodbye to a valued friend and colleague.

For more than a decade, Joe has been a highly effective and respected Associate Dean responsible for the apprenticeship and skilled trades programs. Under his direction, Humber has become the provincial leader in delivering electrical apprenticeship programs and he  enabled Humber to become a  highly respected partner with  MTCU and industry in developing and delivering  apprenticeship and skilled trades  programs. His students were annual  winners at Skills Ontario and Skills Nationals competitions.  Joe also oversaw the design and development of Humber’s Centre for Trades and Technology on Carrier Drive.

Before joining Humber in 1988 as a faculty member in Electrical Apprenticeship, Joe ran his own electrical contracting business. He  has an undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and a master’s degree from Central Michigan University.

On behalf of the Humber community, I wish Joe the best in his retirement years.

Sincerely,

Denise Devlin-Li
Dean, School of Applied Technology

What is cultural appropriation? Who has the right to represent Native cultures?  How do Hollywood, the fashion industry, and sports mascots contribute to the marginalization of Native peoples? Adrienne Keene, the creator of Native Appropriations (nativeappropriations.com) and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, will discuss the ways pop culture represents Native peoples and how these images affect contemporary Indigenous communities. The ways Native communities and allies are pushing back against misrepresentations through online platforms and social media will also be discussed—including recent case studies involving Urban Outfitters, Paul Frank, and The Lone Ranger.

Adrienne Keene, Harvard Graduate School of Education Ed.D. candidate
