Humber is committed to providing a safe work environment for all staff and endeavors to reduce workplace risks that may lead to accidents and personal injury. In the unfortunate circumstance that a work related accident does occur, it is important to know how to respond. The information below outlines the first steps involved in injury treatment and reporting.

INJURY TREATMENT:

  1. If you are injured during the course of your work, obtain medical attention:
  • Humber’s Health Centres, located in A107 (North) and H206 (Lakeshore), will provide first aid treatment as well as advise whether additional assessment and treatment should be obtained from a doctor or other health care provider.
  • If you require assistance outside of Health Centre hours, or if emergency medical services (EMS) are required, contact Security at one of the numbers listed below. Security guards are trained in first aid, and can also contact EMS if required.
    • 416-675-6622 ext. 4000 (for emergencies)
    • 416-675-8500 (for non-emergencies)

If EMS has already been contacted, inform Security. Security is best equipped to direct EMS to the location on campus where they are needed.

  • If you are at a location where neither the Health Centre nor Security services are available, seek care from an outside provider such as a local urgent care clinic or family doctor. Obtain a doctor’s note and provide this to your supervisor.
  1. Inform your supervisor of all work-related injuries as soon as possible.
  2. Maintain ongoing communication with your supervisor, Health & Safety Services, and if necessary the WSIB, during your recovery period.

INJURY REPORTING:

  •  The Health Centre and/or Security will complete and forward a report to Health & Safety Services.
  • Once advised of an injury, Supervisors are to complete an Accident Reporting and Investigation Form and fax it to Health & Safety Services at: 416.675.4708 within 24 hours. Health & Safety Services will use the information on this form to complete the WSIB Form 7 as well as determine if additional investigation of the incident is necessary.

All injuries which occur on Humber property, or occur during work-related off campus activities, must be reported to Health & Safety Services.

Thank you for reviewing this information. Tomorrow’s message will focus on Ladder Safety, and remember that Friday’s message will offer the opportunity to win prizes!

Last year, slips, trips and falls accounted for approximately one third of all lost time injuries at Humber.  That is why it is so important that we all work together to identify and correct slip, trip and fall hazards.

What are some common types of hazards to watch for?

  • Slippery floor surfaces caused by spills
  • Weather related hazards (e.g. snow/ice) in parking lots and walkways
  • Floor mats that are loose or have upturned edges
  • Cords and cables running across walkways or other routes of travel
  • Tools, equipment or debris left on the floor
  • An uneven, or sudden change in floor surface
  • Poor lighting

What should you do if you see a slip, trip or fall hazard?

  • Report building or grounds-related hazards to Security (416-675-8500) and/or Facilities Management (ext. 4444 or use the Pervidi work order system: http://pervidi.humber.org)
  • Report hazards specific to your work area to your supervisor

What other actions can you take to minimize slips, trips and falls?

  • Select footwear that is appropriate for your work activities and environment
  • Don’t rush; adjust your pace to suit the walking surface
  • When carrying objects, ensure that they do not block your view
  • Use the handrail on stairs
  • Use a stepstool or step ladder rather than a chair or other convenient object to reach an upper shelf, bulletin board or other elevated item

Thank you for reviewing this information.  Look for tomorrow’s message in the Communique, and remember that Friday’s message will offer the opportunity to win prizes!

After 18 years of significant contributions to Humber, Susan Krausz, Associate Dean, has decided to retire at the end of this academic year.

Susan first joined Humber as a professor in the Business School. She moved on to become Program Coordinator of Supply Chain Management and then became an Associate Dean in the School of Applied Technology. As Associate Dean with responsibility for the design programs, including the Interior Design and the Industrial Design degrees, Susan has made a significant contribution to Humber.

Under Susan’s direction, the design programs have developed a strong identity of their own within the Humber brand. Design at Humber is now a recognized entity, and these programs share a dedicated facility and space where they will continue to develop in the future.

Susan was also an enthusiastic advocate for United Way. She co-chaired the United Way campaign at Humber for two years and obtained the highest level of support and donations in the history of the college.

We will miss Susan. She has worked very hard on behalf of her faculty and students and deserves to enjoy more time with her friends and family. Susan’s immediate plans on retiring are to spend more time at her beautiful cottage in Haliburton, and to prepare for the upcoming weddings of two of her sons.

Please join me in wishing Susan all the best in her retirement!
