Humber’s Centre for Social Innovation warmly invites you to take part in the Social Innovation Spring Workshops: three exciting, in-person days of innovation. You will hear from faculty, students and community organizations about the genesis of their project and why it matters to community. Through facilitated workshops, you’ll work with them on a challenge within their research or project.  
 
The first workshop will be on March 1, 2023 at 12:30 p.m. at the G Building, BMO Commons of Lakeshore Campus. More information is below. The remaining workshops will be on March 22 at 12:30 p.m. at the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation of North Campus, and on April 3 at 5:30 p.m. at LAMP Community Health Centre.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Institute - Registration Now Open

What is the UDL Institute:

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Institute is a three-day in-person immersive professional learning experience for Humber faculty.  During the UDL Institute, Humber faculty will reflect on and create opportunities to adopt a UDL framework into their teaching practice, examine their current curriculum practices and design learning experiences that integrate an Antiracism and UDL framework. Faculty who participate in the UDL Institute and successfully complete the final assessment* will receive a Micro credential. (Faculty who have completed the Inclusive Curriculum Design Certificate (ICDC) at Humber may be eligible for recognition of this prior learning for part of the Micro credential). 

Specifically, during the Winter UDL Institute, faculty will: 

  1. Identify the rationale, goals, and principles of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework 
  2. Examine methodologies and strategies that are associated with UDL in higher education 
  3. Consider ways to incorporate UDL Principles into teaching practice 
  4. Re-design a learning experience, either a lesson or an assessment, using a UDL Framework 

UDL Institute Schedule: 

March 1: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., North Campus 

  • An orientation to the UDL Institute  

  • “What is the Universal Design for Learning Framework?”: An introduction to the principles and processes of the UDL framework.   

March 2: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., North Campus 

Andratesha Fritzgerald’s keynote and workshop: “Pain, Power, Honour, UDL and Anti-Racism”.   

Educator, author and UDL expert, Andratesha Fritzgerald will deliver a keynote address in the morning and facilitate an interactive workshop in the afternoon that focuses on ways to implement UDL with a focus on equity and anti-racism.  

Ms. Fritzgerald encourages faculty to critically consider the notions of power and empowerment that are made evident in our decisions, designs and environments. 

 Faculty who participate in her sessions will: 

  • Explore the definitions of honour and power 
  • Evaluate power filled choices and examine the implications of power in equitable access to learning 
  • Acknowledge the pain of staying the same 
  • Disarm the danger of “power” 
  • Transform the code of power into the code of honour

March 3: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., North Campus

  • An introduction to designing and (re)designing curriculum 

This interactive workshop will inform faculty on ways to make curriculum design choices that integrate UDL.   

Workshop Description: In this hands-on workshop, you will identify strategies that integrate UDL into your curriculum, and ways to design or redesign using the UDL framework. 

Faculty who participate in this session will: 

  • Re-design a learning experience, either a lesson or an assessment, using a UDL Framework 
  • Reflect on the challenges and opportunities to UDL informed lesson design 
  • Engage in constructive feedback about their UDL informed redesigns 

* The final assessment of the UDL Institute is a curriculum re-design activity that is submitted to the UDL Institute facilitators for review and feedback. UDL faculty participants who achieve a satisfactory or ‘met all requirements’ of the re-design activity will receive the Micro credential.

Support Staff Professional Development 2023

We are excited to share details of the 2023 Support Staff Professional Development (SSPD) event, which focuses on professional development for support staff. This year will mark our 33rd year celebrating a support staff development event.  

This year, the sessions will be delivered in-person and online over the course of five days from Monday, February 27 to Friday, March 3.  

Our support staff are vitally important in helping us deliver on our programs and services to students and employees. This year’s professional development sessions focus on growth and development, sustainability, personal well-being and mental health. We have arranged ten facilitators to deliver workshops on these topics. 

Registration for the sessions is open to all support staff employees (full-time, part-time, casual, temporary) to participate in.

Join Etobicoke Master Gardeners and the Humber Arboretum for a free, online workshop on Plant Identification.

Advance your knowledge of plant identification through plant names and classification. Explore key plant structures and learn how to identify plants by their scientific name, using relevant resources such as botanical keys, identification manuals, and online tools. You will advance your knowledge of plant identification and use in the landscape and learn the basic requirements and cultural practices involved in caring for plants.

This workshop is part of the Eco-Garden Community Workshop series hosted by the Etobicoke Master Gardeners and Humber Arboretum throughout the year.

Humber Music present New York-based jazz pianist and composer David Virelles performing with the Humber Student Ensemble Jazz Collective and special guest and Cuban percussionist Reimundo Sosa. 

Humber Alumnus David Virelles, now an award-winning recording artist with the famed ECM label, will be performing his unique Cuban-influenced contemporary jazz compositions for large jazz ensemble, percussion and piano in this spectacular concert with Humber music students. This concert marks the culmination of a long tradition at Humber Music of the annual Artist-in-Residence Week. A truly transformative week of intensive workshops, masterclasses and seminars, "AIR Week" provides opportunity for students and faculty to work with, learn from, and be inspired by true masters of the jazz musical idiom. Virelle's music is both beautiful and challenging, and the students have been working diligently with ensemble instructor Sam Dickinson to realize David’s musical conception in its full splendor.

Greenfield Research and Innovation Fund - Information Session

Researchers:

Join us for a free information session to learn more about the new Greenfield Research and Innovation Fund.

This funding is open to all sectors and will build on applied research (AR) and strengthen our regional partnerships to respond to the health, economic and environmental crises brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. College researchers will lead these multi-partnered initiatives in collaboration with the private sector, public sector, or not-for-profit organizations based in Canada while encouraging partnerships with universities and other colleges.

In association with regional partners, the Greenfield Research and Innovation (R&I) Fund will develop impactful programs that engage underrepresented communities in research and provide enhanced training to students and emerging researchers (ER).
