Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion

Humber College is committed to providing a learning, working and living environment that respects and reflects the diversity within the student population and our local and global communities. In developing Humber’s Institutional Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Framework and Strategy, the Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion re-established Humber’s Employment Equity Program (EEP). One of the steps in the EEP is to conduct an Employment Systems Review (ESR). The ESR Project will be conducted under the direction of the Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion and Humber’s Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion Committee.

The ESR examines employment policies, practices and organizational culture to identify systemic barriers to inclusion faced by Indigenous Peoples and individuals from equity-deserving groups in the Humber workforce. The ESR findings will support Humber to develop evidence-based strategies to create, implement and sustain the organizational change process necessary to increase equity, diversity and inclusion throughout all levels of the College.

The key project activities are a review of Humber’s employment systems policies and programs, consultations with key stakeholders and the development of an Employment Equity Plan. This will be supported by a communication strategy to educate, inform and engage employees.

In these meetings, the consultants will ask about the organizational culture at Humber and how the human resources employment policies and procedures can be enhanced. They will seek your suggestions on possible changes to advance EDI at the College. Information provided to the consultants will be reported in aggregate form.

Thank you to all who attended the first ESR Focus Group Open Session.

Two additional ESR Focus Group Open Sessions have been scheduled with the consultants:

Please note: Multiple ESR Focus Groups will be held with the consultants. To enable as many faculty and staff participation in these focus groups, kindly attend only one ESR Focus Group meeting.

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion thanks you for helping to build a more inclusive Humber.

Sincerely,
Nancy Simms M.A. ADR
Director, Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion and Lead, EDI Taskforce

Two-spirit, trans and non-binary people across Canada face discrimination, abuse and violence. Many are exposed to this violence because of the difficulties they face in accessing health care, employment and housing (source). Trans Day of Remembrance commemorates those who have been lost as a result of anti-trans violence, and brings attention to the continued violence endured by the trans community. On this Trans Day of Remembrance, Humber College’s 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group (ERG) stands in solidarity with two-spirit, trans and non-binary people across the country, within Toronto, and at Humber College.

We invite those who wish to support this day to attend Student Success and Engagement's event on November 19 at 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.:

Register on Eventbrite

As well, the 519 will be hosting a virtual Trans Day of Remembrance on November 20, 2021 at 4 p.m.:

If you would like to join the 2SLGBTQ+ ERG as we work to make Humber College a more inclusive and accessible place for people of all genders, please contact Matthew Harris at matthew.harris@humber.ca or Jasman Singh at jasman.singh@humber.ca.

Come discuss Shakespeare! Once per month we look at a play by Shakespeare from the perspective that Shakespeare might have something to teach us (rather than the other way around) about politics and human nature. Open to interested Humber faculty, administrators, support staff, and students with a recommendation from a professor. You don’t need a background in English literature to attend.

Our next play is Macbeth and we meet Thursday, November 18 at 8 p.m. on Zoom.

Macbeth is a play about a politically ambitious noble and saviour of his country who degenerates into a despised tyrant. He’s the natural ruler, but seizing power destroys him. Most of us studied it in high school, but what did we miss?

Coming plays: Merry Wives of Windsor on Thursday December 16 and Julius Caesar on Thursday, January 20.

Free text at www.opensourceshakespeare.org. Arden, Signet, and Oxford editions of Shakespeare are also good. For Macbeth, there’s a new edition by Jan H. Blits with useful notes.

Videos: Humber College Library has all of the BBC (early 1980’s) videos available which can be watched online.

RSVP: Kirk Rintoul, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Business at kirk.rintoul@humber.ca for the Zoom link.

Limited to 15 confirmed attendees (waitlist if necessary).
