UofGH's department of Academic Services invites you to attend the Virtual Winter 2021 Book Launch Series event, featuring Dr. Greg Kelley, Media Studies instructor at the University of Guelph-Humber.
Join Dr. Kelley as he provides a review and reading of his newly released monograph Unruly Audience: Folk Interventions in Popular Media. The book examines how “folk interventions” challenge institutional media with active –often public—social engagement. Drawing on a diverse range of familiar media texts from film, television, stand-up comedy, popular music, advertising and tourism, Kelley demonstrates how active audiences mobilize folklore to disrupt dominant modes of media discourse. With materials both historical and contemporary and compiled from print, internet archives, and original fieldwork, Kelley’s audience-centered analysis shows us that producers of media are not the sole arbiters of meaning. With folklore as an important tool, unruly audiences refashion mediated expression so that the material becomes more relevant to their own circumstances.
Please join us on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for this highly anticipated event and help us celebrate this outstanding literary accomplishment.
This event will be held online via the Zoom platform. Zoom meeting details will be provided to guests who have registered.

Relationships sustain us, and when it comes to Indigenous peoples, relationships and responsibility go hand in hand. Like responsibility, relationships involve mutual respect, accountability, and reciprocity. Relationships are about togetherness, team-building, nurturing, sharing, strength, and love. Relationships must be maintained both within oneself and with those around us in order to maintain a healthy balance.
Join Indigenous Education & Engagement and the Consent Peer Education Program in a discussion with John and Deanne Hupfield about what a healthy relationship looks like from an Indigenous perspective for them. John and Deanne met at the drum social at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto in fall 2008. Their snagiversary is Rama Powwow in October 2008. They married at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto in February 2011. Five kids later they are still working through life together as partners.
