With Ontario’s commitment to be a fully accessible province by 2025 through the implementation of the AODA, knowing how to create accessible learning materials is crucial! Humber College has committed to Accessible Education as one of its Strategic Pillars. Creating and providing accessible documents is about inclusion, equity, and social responsibility.

PART 1 & 2:

Creating Accessible Documents (Part 1 and 2) will review WCAG accessibility guidelines, requirements and issues for digital content and documents. In these hands-on workshops, participants will learn the fundamentals of creating accessible materials and modify inaccessible content to comply with accessibility standards. As well, participants will be introduced to the use of accessibility checkers in PowerPoint, Word and Acrobat Pro and the different features in these software applications to make documents accessible.

You will walk away with strategies and a toolbox full of apps and resources to help with making your content accessible.

NOTE: Creating Accessible Documents Part One and Part Two are part of the Inclusive Curriculum Design Certificate. However, you are welcome to take both as stand-alone modules outside of the certificate. It is a pre-requisite to take Part 1 before Part 2 and both before Part 3.

PART 3:

After participating in Creating Accessible Documents Part 1 and Part 2, you feel confident that you can recognize accessibility issues in digital documents and are able to apply the AODA and WCAG guidelines and requirements to make them accessible. Now that you have gone back to your own materials and documents and given accessibility a try, you may have some further questions. Creating Accessible Documents Part 3 is a drop-in working session you can get those questions answered. Come to this session with your documents that you would like to make accessible and that you may have questions about. We will brainstorm, analyze, and find solutions to your accessibility issues!

NOTE: Please bring at least one document (PowerPoint or Word) that you would like to make accessible.

It is a pre-requisite to take Part 1 before Part 2 and both before Part 3.

The Scholars’ Café is a chance to discuss the latest in the teaching and learning literature. It is like a book club, but for journal articles. Each month, faculty will gather to chat informally about a selected paper from a scholarly teaching and learning journal. Please join us for coffee and a collegial discussion!

This month’s paper describes different approaches to reflective teaching practice – a timely topic as we each reflect on our own successes and challenges from the past semester. Do you reflect on your teaching practice? Formally? Informally? Do you journal? Chat with colleagues? Join us for a conversation about the paper and our own individual approaches to reflective practice.
