About William and the Windmill:

"With only a 20-year old textbook as his guide, 14-year-old William Kamkwamba builds a humble homemade windmill in his Malawian village that changes his life forever. Using junk parts and his imagination, he harnesses enough energy to power a generator that saves his family from famine and resuscitates his dying farming community. The windmill transforms William’s life and catapults him on to the world stage leading him to opportunities and choices that distance him from the life he once knew and the people he loves. A subtle and beautiful portrait of the difficult balancing act of third word activism.
William and the Windmill, Winner of: Best Documentary 2013 – Sundance Film Festival, Flyway Film Festival, Asheville Film Festival and SXSW Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary."

It's Open: Moving Forward Open Education, Open Pedagory & Open Practice

Open Education is not a revolutionary idea. “It’s an evolution and return to the core values of the academy - sharing knowledge freely for the benefit of society.” (Mackintosh, 2017).
eCampusOntario has embarked on a path to openness for Ontario higher education, offering a library of free and open instructional resources that will support an access and affordability scenario for learners, and an empowerment strategy for instructors. David Porter will describe the research and development path that eCampusOntario is currently pursuing on behalf of member institutions, and how you can benefit from the work.

Keynote Speaker: David Porter

Dr. David Porter is the CEO of eCampusOntario, the primary face of the Ontario Online Learning Consortium (OOLC), a not-for-profit corporation whose membership is composed of all publicly funded colleges and universities in Ontario.
David is a long-time advocate for the benefits of adapting new technology to deliver educational opportunities, and has been involved in open and distance learning since the 1990s, at both the K-12 and higher education levels.
David was formerly Associate VP Educational Support and Innovation at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. For 11 years, David was the Executive Director of BCcampus. During his term at BCcampus, David and his team engineered Canada’s first government funded open textbook program, a leading-edge development in higher education in 2012.
David has also worked as a project leader and consultant for international open and distance learning projects, most recently in Mongolia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. He is a co-editor of the International Journal of eLearning and Distance Education (IJEDE.ca), an open access journal.

The peer review process – in which experts critically assess manuscripts under consideration for publication in a scholarly journal - is critical to upholding the academic rigour and self-correcting nature of scholarship. More than just critically responding to a paper, there is an art to crafting a review that is constructive and rigourous, while also being reasonable and collegial. In this session, we will walk through the process of reviewing a scholarly paper with practical tips and suggestions for both novice and seasoned reviewers.

Increasing Inclusion with Persons with Disabilities facilitated by David Lepofsky
Friday, March 23, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
North Campus, LRC6084

David Lepofsky is a visiting professor (part-time) at the Osgoode Hall Law School and an adjunct member of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. He holds volunteer leadership roles in the disability community. He is chair of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Alliance and the chair of the Toronto District School Board’s Special Education Advisory Committee.

Since the late 1970s, he has been active in a volunteer capacity, advocating for new laws to protect the rights of persons with disabilities in Canada. In 1980, he appeared before the Joint Committee of the Senate and the House of Commons on the Constitution of Canada, on behalf of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind for an amendment to the proposed Charter of Rights, to guarantee equality rights to persons with disabilities. The efforts of a great many combined to lead Parliament to pass the disability amendment to the Charter.

All are welcome, and attendance is flexible - come for part of the session or all of it; come some weeks and not others.
