Join us for an insightful presentation that explores the complex interplay of racism, sexual violence, and trauma. We'll discuss how understanding these intersections can lead to trauma-informed interventions, promoting empowerment and recovery.

This event is crucial for creating safe spaces for individuals who have experienced racialized sexual violence, considering the impact of historical oppression and childhood experiences. Join us as we delve into this important conversation and work toward a more empathetic and healing-focused world.

Dr. Fenwick McKelvey

ChatGPT has become a cultural sensation, an icon of generative artificial intelligence’s promise or threat. But ChatGPT and technologies like it are not just popular, but popular culture encoded. In this lecture, Dr. McKelvey will argue that generative AI is a product of popular culture in that machine learning encodes what it collects from societies and cultures into predictions that drive content generation. By describing the production of large AI models, he will challenge us to re-think how we care for popular culture, the risks of new kinds of information feudalism, and the importance of an information commons.

The LGBTQ+ Resource Center and The 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group will mark Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) on Monday, November 20 and we invite the Humber community (staff, faculty and students) to join us.

About Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR)

Transgender Day of Remembrance (Monday, November 20) has been observed around the world since 1999. TDoR was created by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honour and memorialize Rita Hester, a Black trans woman who was killed and subsequently since, this day is a vigil to commemorate the trans, Two-Spirit, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people’s lives that were lost in acts of transphobia and anti-trans violence.

On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we come together as a community to raise awareness about transphobia and prejudice resulting in anti-trans hate crimes and multiple lost lives. We also carve out time and space to honor and commemorate the loss of trans lives, particularly those of trans women of colour, that are often dismissed by mainstream media despite many being at the forefront of queer and trans liberation justice movements. Finally, this is a specific day of significance to express our love and care for the victims of transphobic violence and trans antagonism through honoring their lives and personhood as a community.

Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber will be recognizing Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 by lowering flags at our campuses to half-staff.

You can join in several events both in-person at the North and Lakeshore campuses.

On Thursday, November 23, 2023, the fourth year Kinesiology students from the University of Guelph-Humber will be showcasing their final Knowledge Translation Projects as part of KIN*3060: Human Development and Aging. Half of the students will present in the morning session (8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.), with another new batch of projects on display in the afternoon (2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.).

Students have developed a wide range of multi-media strategies to effectively communicate their scientific findings to a general audience - so faculty, staff and students from across the Guelph-Humber and Humber community are welcome!

Here is just a sampling of what our students have been working on:

  1. Can yoga decrease the risk of post-partum depression?
  2. Does early sport specialization improve or hinder future elite sport performance?
  3. Does cannabis exposure impair the developing brain and impact academic performance?
  4. Can intermittent fasting slow down the aging process?
  5. Is the Mediterranean diet good for people experiencing menopause?

All student groups will display their projects simultaneously in an open 'expo' style. Please feel free to come by at any point during the showcase to interact with our students, ask questions etc.  All are welcome, so bring a friend too.

We look forward to seeing you there.
